My name is Brennan my business idea was sparked by a traumatic personal experience. Three and a half years ago, in the midst of my vacation, my younger brother was rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night with severe cramps and dehydration. Our lives would change forever as he was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. While something that millions can and do live with, diabetes is no small task as it requires near constant management and if that wasn't enough to deal with, it is expensive. The vials of insulin which diabetics depend on can cost upwards of two hundred dollars each without healthcare.
Due to the constant vigilance and costs necessary for treating diabetes, I have learned there are two sides of diabetes. My family was incredibly fortunate to get access to very good healthcare professionals right after my brother's diagnosis and learn the ropes quicker than most. Because something can go wrong at any moment, it takes constant monitoring of blood glucose levels, acting insulin, food, and activity to attempt to keep him in the range set out for us by doctors. My family is able to do a lot to keep him healthy but the sad truth is that not all diabetics or families of diabetics can afford to constantly monitor blood glucose. Additionally if they do not have good healthcare, acquiring pumps, sensors, and insulin is very expensive. I have met kids in these situations and sadly, they end up having high blood glucose most of the time because in the short term, it is safer than attempting to stay in a normal range and run the risk of going too low with the insufficient equipment they have. These kids are often underdeveloped and have a much higher chance of developing eye, kidney, and nerve damage later in life.
The business idea I have is simple but powerful. I want to provide support to diabetics so that they can all live the life they want the way my brother is able to. I want to run a business which can provide information from diabetics for diabetics. A kind of open discussion where new diabetics in their most volatile stages are able to get quick safe aid. On the backend, I want to research and develop equipment that can be used for longer periods of time. At the moment, continuous glucose monitors last up to ten days while insulin pumps last up to three. The equipment is not designed with efficiency in mind as a large amount of the product is thrown out after use. I would look into reusing more of the appliance to bring down costs. The biggest thing that I believe would have the greatest impact is researching insulin production. Industrially produced, insulin is not expensive to make and with ongoing research in the field of medicine and genetic engineering, I know it is possible to create affordable insulin. By making diabetes a more affordable thing to live with, I think that children and adults who have it will be able to spend more of their lives doing what they love and less thinking about, budgeting for, and worrying about their T1D.
Since I was young, I have loved thinking about solutions to problems people have, inventing things, and starting businesses. I see the impact I could have on people around the world if I strike out and do something like this and it really inspires me. I have not learned much about being an entrepreneur in school but I enjoy reading books about entrepreneurs, innovation, economics, and anything business related.
