Promising Pathways - Hearing Impairment Scholarship
Hello, my name is Brenda Chamberlain and I have been wearing hearing aids for 30-plus years. I attend Santa Fe College in Gainesville Florida where I am just finishing my AA and have been accepted into their Bachelor's program for Business Management-Human Resources. While I have enjoyed all my classes, I have had trouble with my in-person classes. I work full-time and would always have to race to try to get the best seat for the acoustics in the room. The rooms most of the time were not made to amplify sound. If I ran late, I was struck by the door and could not hear the teachers very well. For one of my math classes, I had a teacher who was a sweet lady but had a thick Russian-like accent. At this time, I had not understood how the disabilities center could have to help me and I barely passed the class. I eventually had a teacher who when I asked for videos with captions since his class relied on them a lot, told me about the disabilities center and how they could help me, and the teachers had the resources I needed. For content, some of his videos were older videos and did not have captions. I now work with the disabilities office every semester to make sure all videos have captions for me. I have also discovered a live transcript app that can be used for meetings and live-feed events. Also, newer cell phones now have a live caption feature for phone calls, videos, and even games (to a point). My goal for when I graduate is to move into an upper-level position at the non-profit I work at to help them with human resources and volunteers. For right now most of the staff wear several hats and burnout is a high risk for them. We work with a very vulnerable part of the population, victims of sex trafficking, and their needs are extremely high. There is not a whole lot of funding out there for nonprofits that deal with this, so as you can imagine the pay is not high. I want to add here that the funding is about where domestic violence was in the 80s. People know it’s there, but they don’t understand the need of it to fund it. If I receive this scholarship, it would go a long way to help me in fulfilling my dreams of getting my BA in Business Management: Human Resources.
