I didn’t recognize my anxiety for what it was. I thought it was a normal sensation everyone endured. It wasn’t until my first panic attack that I realized how overwhelming and isolating this struggle could be. That moment was a turning point; I knew I needed help to cope with the uncontrollable shaking and difficulty breathing. I had heard about how mental illness could profoundly affect someone’s life. I thought I understood, but nothing prepared me for the reality of panic attacks. For me, these episodes were often triggered in loud settings, where the world seemed to close in. The ground felt unsteady, and the spinning chaos in my mind became all too familiar. It was in these moments, surrounded by noise and movement, that I grasped how deeply anxiety could impact my life. Looking back, anxiety’s grip on me began long before I recognized it. In middle school, I noticed my heart racing, my hands fidgeting, and my body trembling when someone spoke to me. I lacked the vocabulary to describe it, assuming it was part of growing up. Over time, I masked these feelings, becoming a quiet person who avoided social situations at any cost and doubted myself constantly. I thought this was who I was, not realizing anxiety had built walls around me, isolating me from others. Mental illness wasn’t something my family acknowledged. My parents, who worked tirelessly to provide for us, didn’t have the tools to address their own struggles or mine. Watching them taught me to bury my feelings and push forward, even when I felt crushed by the weight of my anxiety. Everything came to a head during a high school rally. The overwhelming noise of screams, cheers, and applause filled the room. My chest tightened, tears welled up, and my body shook uncontrollably. It was my worst panic attack, but it marked a turning point. A teacher noticed my distress and guided me to the school therapist, where I finally found understanding and support. Asking for help was terrifying. Admitting I was struggling felt like failure. I wish I’d sought help sooner, but I’m grateful I eventually did. Therapy taught me that anxiety wasn’t a flaw but something I could learn to manage. I discovered tools like breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and setting boundaries to navigate overwhelming moments. Anxiety is still a part of my life, but it doesn’t define me anymore. These small earnings were just enough to buy groceries for the month, and on lucky days, I’d even receive a snack afterward. My aunts mocked my family for this, calling us unsanitary and filthy. I never thought it was strange; we were cleaning our community while earning an honest living. Although peeling wires and collecting bottles may seem insignificant, it was my first exposure to hard work and determination. Watching my dad’s sacrifices gave me the motivation to push myself harder in school. At the same time, those long afternoons collecting bottles also gave me time to look at the stars and wonder. What secrets lay hidden among the vast expanse of the universe? Could I one day explore them? My fascination with the universe became my escape, a source of inspiration that drove me to dream bigger. I knew I wanted a future in astronomy—a field that blends curiosity, problem-solving, and the desire to understand what lies beyond. My dad’s example taught me that no work is shameful if it supports your family, and that belief shaped my drive to pursue education. Astronomy may seem distant from those early lessons, but both require determination and a sense of purpose. Whether it’s collecting bottles to provide for my family or dedicating myself to uncovering the mysteries of the universe, I’ve learned to approach everything with pride and persistence. This scholarship represents more than financial support—it symbolizes hope for my family and the opportunity to follow my passion. It will help me further my education, ease my family’s financial burden, and honor the sacrifices that brought me here. My journey has taught me to value every opportunity and to look beyond challenges, just as I look to the stars, knowing there’s always more to discover and achieve if I continue to have hope in myself and what lies ahead in my future.

Astronomy has fascinated me since I first flipped through my fifth-grade science textbook filled with images of the sun, stars, and galaxies. It opened my eyes to the vastness of the universe and made schoolwork feel like a thrilling journey of discovery. Learning became more than just an obligation—it felt like solving an intricate puzzle. I found myself constantly asking questions about our place in the universe and seeking answers to the mysteries of space. After school, I’d spend hours diving into YouTube videos, exploring everything from the possibility of life outside Earth to groundbreaking theories about the universe. I was a self-proclaimed science nerd, devouring documentaries and channels like What If, BRIGHT SIDE, and Astro-Alexandra. This passion only grew stronger, and I realized that my ultimate goal was to study astronomy and uncover the secrets of the universe. A defining moment that sealed my career aspirations occurred during a visit to my mom’s hometown, where light pollution wasn’t an issue. My cousin brought a telescope, and we observed Jupiter, Venus, and Mars in alignment. Seeing their differences up close was mesmerizing, and I felt a deep connection to something much bigger than myself. That was when I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to exploring the universe. When I started high school, my math and physics classes were tough—they really discouraged me. The challenges made me consider straying away from my passion, but I didn’t give up. Instead, I took the initiative to improve my skills. Over the summer, I took extra math classes to catch up and get ahead. This effort paid off, and now I’m taking the highest math class offered at my school, AP Calculus AB. These obstacles have been building steps, teaching me perseverance and determination. My school also offered an Astronomy & Astrophysics course, but unfortunately I couldn’t take it due to scheduling conflicts. I accepted it at first but I soon realized that this wasn’t what I wanted— I really wanted to explore my passion deeper, so I took action and I am planning to apply to a college course that could offer me an introductory course to Astronomy, and allow me to gain valuable insight and credits toward my future. In ten years, I see myself working as an astrophysicist, collaborating with a team at an institution like NASA or the European Space Agency. I want to analyze data from telescopes and space probes, focusing on exoplanets, black holes, and galaxies. My goal is to help humanity better understand the universe. I also hope to inspire others through public outreach, sharing discoveries and sparking curiosity, just like those documentaries and videos that first fueled my interest. My ultimate dream is to advance space science, pass on the wonder of exploration to the next generation, and continue to marvel at the universe every day.
