Through grit and perseverance, women have made great strides to overcome systemic oppression. These women inspire me to equip, serve, and protect the world around me, specifically regarding maternal health and women’s health advocacy. I am devoted to debunking misconceptions about women’s health and breaking down the barriers of mistrust standing between black women and the world of medicine. It would be my great honor to become a physician with a mission: to prevent mothers from the agony of losing children and to prevent children from growing up motherless. As a passionate women’s health advocate, aiding in the maternal mortality crisis, I am a Bachelor of Science in Biology HBCU graduate from Spelman College and a current pre-medical graduate student at Meharry Medical College obtaining my Master’s in Health Science. I personify my brand: Beauty and Brains, while in pursuit of my Doctorate of Medicine degree with plans to become an OB/GYN through the platform I’ve created on social media. I’ve obtained influence and work to consistently inspire digital mentees around the world as a YouTuber and Podcaster, with over 5 million lifetime views. Additionally, I’ve secured thousands in fundraising dollars for March of Dimes and have lobbied on Capitol Hill through my service initiative Birth Equity 4 All. I hope to show young girls they are not defined by where they come from and that they can achieve their highest dreams by documenting my road to medicine and leading by example. I want my legacy to be based on how I was able to provide kindness, add joy, and inspire others to dream big. My plan after grad school is to work in primary care and specifically, in urban communities, where minorities often struggle to receive adequate health care from providers who see their humanity. My success as a doctor will be measured by my protection of human life and my development of community strength. Medicine is the most impactful way to care for our communities and this scholarship is the helping hand that I need, as a first-generation college graduate, to reduce the financial stress in my higher education journey. There are various stories of motherless newborns who are victims of maternal mortality rates, countless families traumatized by the cries of agonizing mothers neglected by their healthcare team, and numerous black women who say goodbye to their premature babies who died during childbirth because Black women are twice as likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than other women. As I have matured and pursued medicine, reducing these statistics has become my passion.
