I'm a biology and environmental science double major, and I want to use what I learn in my education to contribute to the betterment of the world. I want to become the best I can be in my area of study, but I also like to be a jack of all trades. I love to pick up new hobbies, like Chinese calligraphy and pyrology, and I'm currently trying to learn Korean and Spanish in my free time. I hope that I will be able to experience life in various parts of the world during my professional career.

Environmental Stewardship Award
At my university, I work in the Office of Sustainability, participate in the Committee on Sustainability, and I’m a member of the Student Sustainability Council. The crux of these positions is education and expanding participation by students and staff in achieving university goals. I find myself constantly redefining what sustainability is to me. So, I love educating other students and staff members about the importance of sustainability and what it looks like at our school and then encouraging them to define it for themselves.
I understand sustainability as a lens through which to view the world. It applies to environmental, social, and economic issues and fits into every field of interest. By thinking sustainably, I’m critical of the world around me and I discover how I can be a better steward and more conscientious person. When I want to purchase something, I consider not only its immediate existence but what labor and resources were put into its making and where its future is. Being sustainable means taking responsibility for our actions.
Based on feedback collected over the past two semesters, the Student Sustainability Council has decided to curate a Sustainability Guide for the student body. This is our newest effort to make sustainability accessible. I’m working on the recycling and composting section so that on and off-campus students have a convenient resource for understanding waste management.
I would like to pursue research after graduation and my interests lie in innovating the bioplastic industry. I imagine a world where our plastics are made by microbes and a new type of recycling emerges: biodegradation. The advancement of these sustainable technologies would make a realistic alternative to synthetic plastics. I will help to create a convenient material that’s affordable and accessible to everyone.
