Driven by personal experience with medical uncertainty, I am a Class of 2026 graduate from the Houston area, an incoming University of Pittsburgh Biological Sciences student, and a future physician assistant focused on compassionate care for patients with complex, chronic, or hard-to-diagnose conditions.
My family’s hardship began when my father, Johnny McCarver, passed away after a sudden unexplained illness. Losing him at five shaped how I view healthcare, unanswered questions, and the need for providers who listen closely to patients and families.
After severe COVID, ongoing symptoms led to diagnoses of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome complicated by dysautonomia/POTS, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. While managing a 504 plan, specialist care, symptom flares, and family responsibilities, I maintained strong academics. My final transcript reflects a 3.66 unweighted GPA, 3.92 weighted GPA, and class rank of 23 out of 1,456 students, placing me in the top 1.58% of my class.
Pitt provided financial aid, but significant costs remain. I am pursuing scholarships, using available loans, and preparing to work during college to help make this next chapter possible.
Outside academics, I figure skate, help beginner skaters, create art, sew and design clothes, read, collect books, watch movies, and write. I also help care for my younger sister while my mother works long hours as my sole financial provider.
Scholarship support will help me begin college with stability and focus as I pursue a healthcare career rooted in resilience, service, and patient-centered care.
