Driven by personal experience with medical uncertainty, I am a Class of 2030 college student based in Houston, TX, majoring in Biological Sciences. I am completing prerequisite courses to attend NP school and become a Nurse Practitioner focused on compassionate care for patients with complex, chronic, or hard-to-diagnose conditions. My family’s hardship began when my father, Johnny McCarver, passed away after a sudden unexplained illness. Losing my dad at age five with no clear answers shaped how I view healthcare and the need for providers who listen closely to patients and families. Years later, after a severe case of COVID, ongoing symptoms led to diagnoses of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome complicated by dysautonomia/POTS, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. While managing a 504 plan, specialist care, symptom flares, and family responsibilities, I maintained strong academics. My transcript reflects a 3.9 GPA and a class rank of 23 out of 1,456 students, placing me in the top 1.58% of my class. I am pursuing scholarships, using loans, and working while in college to complete the coursework required to work as an LVN / RN and become a Nurse Practitioner. Outside academics, I help care for and guide my younger sister while my mother works long hours as my sole financial provider. I also figure skate, help beginner skaters, create art, design and sew clothing, read, collect books, and enjoy cinematography and writing. Scholarship support will help me begin college with stability and focus as I pursue a healthcare career rooted in resilience, service, and patient-centered care.
