If given the opportunity, I would establish a Youth Life Skills Academy, a program dedicated to teaching children practical, real-world skills often overlooked in traditional schooling. My focus would be on essential areas like home economics, financial literacy, and basic practical skills, equipping young people with the knowledge and confidence to navigate adulthood successfully. This academy wouldn't just be about lessons; it would be about hands-on learning, empowering the next generation with the tools they truly need. The importance of this initiative stems from a growing concern that many young people are entering adulthood unprepared for its fundamental demands. While schools excel at academic subjects, they rarely delve into the intricacies of balancing a budget, cooking nutritious meals, or even basic household repairs. I've seen numerous instances where young adults struggle with these everyday tasks, resulting in unnecessary stress, poor financial decisions, and a reliance on others. A community thrives when its members are self-sufficient, capable, and confident in managing their own lives. Currently, the onus of teaching these vital life skills often falls solely on parents, who may lack the time, resources, or even their own expertise in certain areas. Our proposed academy would fill this critical gap, providing structured, engaging classes for children of all ages. Imagine a program where kids learn to plan and cook healthy meals, understand the difference between needs and wants, create a budget, or even change a flat tire. These are not just "nice-to-have" skills; they are foundational for independent living and responsible citizenship. The home economics component would cover everything from basic cooking techniques and meal planning to understanding nutrition and food safety. Children would learn about household management, including cleaning, organization, and even simple repairs like fixing a leaky faucet. The financial literacy aspect would teach them about saving, spending wisely, understanding credit, and the basics of investing. We would also incorporate practical skills like basic first aid, effective communication, and problem-solving, all taught through interactive, age-appropriate activities and projects. Ultimately, investing in these life skills is an investment in the long-term well-being and resilience of our community. When young people are equipped with practical knowledge, they are more likely to achieve financial stability, maintain healthy lifestyles, and contribute positively to their households and neighborhoods. They become less dependent on others, more capable of handling unexpected challenges, and more confident in their ability to shape their own futures. My vision for an improved community is one where every child graduates not just with academic knowledge, but with the practical wisdom and confidence to lead a fulfilling and independent life.

Habits for Impactful Law Enforcement My father's unwavering example has instilled in me several key qualities that I believe are essential for making an impactful difference in the community through law enforcement. Empathy and Compassion: My father's actions, from agreeing to a plea deal that balanced justice with mercy, to his long-standing support of our handyman, demonstrate that true law enforcement isn't just about upholding the letter of the law, but also understanding the human story behind it. I have adopted this approach, believing that approaching situations with genuine understanding can de-escalate tension and foster cooperation. In community policing, this means actively listening to concerns, acknowledging perspectives, and responding with a human touch, rather than just a badge. This quality allows for building bridges, not just enforcing rules, ultimately leading to greater trust and a safer environment for everyone. Active Listening and Thoughtful Response: The mantra "slow to speak and quick to hear" is a cornerstone of my father's character and a habit I've deliberately cultivated. This means taking the time to fully comprehend a situation before reacting. In law enforcement, where split-second decisions can have life-altering consequences, this quality is invaluable. It enables thorough information gathering, reduces misunderstandings, and allows for more measured and effective responses, whether mediating a dispute or gathering crucial details at a scene. This thoughtful approach builds confidence in the community that their concerns are heard and respected. Resilience and Commitment to Service: Witnessing my father return to work after enduring such a traumatic event, steadfast in his dedication to keeping others safe and supporting those who wished to reform, profoundly shaped my understanding of resilience. It's not just about bouncing back from adversity; it's about drawing strength from it to continue serving a greater purpose. This commitment means showing up every day, ready to face challenges, help those in need, and uphold the safety of the community, even when the job is dangerous and emotionally taxing. It's the unwavering dedication to the well-being of others that truly defines impactful law enforcement. My father’s life is a testament to the profound impact one individual can have through a career in law enforcement, demonstrating that strength is found not just in authority, but in empathy, understanding, and an unwavering commitment to humanity. I am driven to follow in his footsteps, to bring these qualities to serve and protect, and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

My dad has had a significant impact on my life. He exhibits empathy and a heart for people. In addition, he is slow to speak and quick to hear. My dad has been a law enforcement officer for over 30 years. My dad has worked nights most of my life. But there was one night that was different. He pulled over a car and one of the gentlemen in the car put a loaded gun right to my dad's head and pulled the trigger. But the gun jammed. THANK GOD!!! My dad did fire back and struck the gentleman, however, he recovered. The gentleman had six charges and was facing life in prison. He plead not guilty. Over six months later they went to court. The gentleman continued to say he was not guilty, but then the dash cam video was shown to tell the real story. From what I understand, the jury was shaken. After lunch, they told my dad the gentlemen wanted to make a plea deal. My dad agreed because he did not want him to be in jail all of his life but wanted him to learn a lesson. The gentleman was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years. He was only 20 years old at the time of this event. My parents decided not to tell me initially because they did not want me to be afraid or change my routine. It was obvious to me that something was different, but my parents assured me all was well and things were okay. I know they were troubled, but they still did what needed to be done for me. However, I found out about the shooting watching YouTube Videos on my computer. I told my mom that someone tried to shoot dad, but he did not get hurt. She explained a little bit of what happened and assured me that God was taking care of dad and it was okay. We have a handy man who fixes things when they break at our house. My dad told me they meet when he was arresting him. Dad said after her arrested him they talked and he promised he would do better and get off drugs. My dad told him if he turns it around and stays clear, he will always send business his way. Over 27 years later, my dad continues to refer him to people. He is also the first person dad calls when something breaks at our house. My dad has made an impact in my life and has demonstrated empathy and compassion to others while performing a very scary and dangerous job. My dad did not let a shooting keep him from going back to work to keep everyone safe, help people, and support those who want to turn their life around. He is committed to meeting people where they are and helping as much as he can.

Janie Mae "Loving You to Wholeness" Scholarship
Kindness is a way to improve our community while minimizing hatred, envy, jealousy, and isolation. Kindness is the key to improving our community one act at a time. A kind word, loving heart, and a smile go a long way. Recently, my karate instructor described me as "helpful even with help is not needed". YES, that is me, I just like to help people sharing kindness and caring. That is why I want to work for an organization that helps others, like FEMA or police. In the community, I will help people in the grocery store that I will see needing help with heavy objects or high shelf objects. In school, I have shared my lunch with someone who did not have lunch or did not bring a snack. Many times (and when I did not have extra money), I asked my mom to bring snacks for us to have at band practice because many people did not eat or have food. Each summer of my high school career and now, I have volunteered at a local karate summer camp. Not only has this provided me with leadership skill, self confidence, and personal growth, but the opportunity to have a positive impact on younger kids. I am an only child, so I consider these kids my little brothers and sisters. I realize just how blessed I am truly blessed to have parents who have demonstrated loving people where they are consistently. Some of these kids do not have structure at home nor do they know how to defend themselves appropriately. I have been able to balance playing with structure and keeping the kids on task and safe. My duties include greeting parents, facilitating games, assisting with karate class, and mentoring other volunteers. This has been an opportunity for me to build relationships in a safe space while gaining the trust of the students and parents. It is amazing how getting on their level when things are not going well or greeting in the morning or saying a child's name makes a difference in how they respond to you. I always greet the parents when they come in, rather they are dropping off or picking up their children. Sometimes, I have noticed a kind greeting changes their facial expression for the better. This is also an opportunity for me to build a rapport with the parents so that when I do have to share a bad news report, they will trust me and know I am coming from a good place. I do my part to show kindness to everyone I meet.
