Whether it is the movement of blood through the body, the rate of a chemical reaction, or the technology behind medical imaging, calculus provides the mathematical foundation that helps scientists and healthcare professionals understand complex processes. While many people think of calculus as simply solving equations, I believe it is about learning to analyze change, recognize patterns, and solve problems. As a Biochemistry student pursuing a career in medicine, I have come to understand how important calculus is across the STEM fields. Although I am still early in my academic journey, I know that medicine relies on mathematics in many ways. Healthcare professionals use mathematical principles to calculate medication dosages, determine IV fluid rates, interpret laboratory results, and ensure treatments are both safe and effective. In biochemistry and medical research, calculus helps scientists understand how chemical reactions change over time, how medications move through the body, how diseases progress, and how biological systems function. It also plays an important role in technologies such as CT and MRI imaging, allowing physicians to diagnose illnesses with greater accuracy. Calculus has also taught me lessons beyond mathematics. It was one of the most challenging courses I have taken, requiring patience, persistence, and the ability to think through problems one step at a time. Instead of giving up when a problem became difficult, I learned to slow down, analyze each piece carefully, and approach solutions logically. It also taught me that practice is essential to becoming proficient with calculus and that mastery does not happen overnight. With consistent effort, concepts that once seemed impossible gradually became manageable. Although math is not everyone's favorite subject, I believe understanding its importance makes it worth the effort. Mathematics is the foundation of many STEM fields, and calculus is one of the languages that helps us describe and understand the world around us. Recognizing its value encourages students to push through the challenges and appreciate how powerful mathematics truly is in advancing science, technology, engineering, and medicine. My passion for medicine began in an unexpected place: watching Doc McStuffins as a child. Seeing her care for her toys with kindness sparked my first interest in healthcare. As I grew older, that childhood inspiration was strengthened by learning about Florence Nightingale, whose compassionate care for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War left a lasting impact on healthcare, and, most importantly, by the compassionate pediatricians who cared for me throughout my life. Each pediatrician I've had was dedicated, welcoming, and kind. I was never afraid of going to the doctor because each pediatrician created an environment where I felt safe, heard, and cared for. Their kindness transformed what could have been a frightening experience into one that made me curious about medicine instead. Their influence inspired me to pursue pediatrics or family medicine. I want my future patients to feel empowered to understand their health, know they are never alone, and leave each appointment feeling supported and reassured. In addition, living with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis has given me a different perspective on healthcare. As a patient, I learned what it means to place my trust in healthcare professionals who took the time to listen, answer my questions, and reassure me during uncertain moments. Those experiences have taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of treating every patient with dignity and compassion. They've also strengthened my desire to become a physician who not only treats illnesses but also builds meaningful relationships with patients and families over the years. While I remain open to discovering where I can make the greatest impact during medical school, I am currently drawn to pediatrics and family medicine because of the lasting relationships these physicians build with patients and families. Starting to volunteer in college has given me a new perspective: a life of service can take many forms. While volunteering at The DoSeum Children's Museum in San Antonio, being bilingual allowed me to help Spanish-speaking families feel welcomed, understood, and confident asking questions. That experience taught me that making a meaningful difference in someone's life does not always require a stethoscope or a hospital, but it can begin with simply making someone feel seen, heard, and supported! As a bilingual physician, I hope to bridge communication gaps for families who may struggle to understand complex medical information. Every patient deserves to feel heard, respected, and confident in the care they receive, regardless of the language they speak. I want to create an environment where children and their families feel comfortable asking questions, actively participate in their healthcare, and leave each visit feeling informed and reassured. Growing up as the daughter of a veteran has shaped who I am in ways many people may not realize. While some assume military families have an easy or privileged life, the reality is much different. A defining experience occurred just a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic. My father deployed on what was supposed to be a four-month mission. However, when the pandemic shut down travel in the spring of 2020, his deployment was unexpectedly extended to seven months. With no close family nearby, my mother and I had to navigate one of the most uncertain times on our own. I was in middle school and constantly wondered how much longer it would be until I could finally be reunited with my dad. During this journey, I truly understood how difficult it is to be separated from a parent. Although my father was serving our country, there were moments when all I wanted was for him to be home. Even though I missed him every day, I knew I had to remain strong while we hoped and prayed for his safe return. When we were finally reunited, I realized that time together is never guaranteed, and it made me appreciate the sacrifices military families make every day. That experience taught me that military service is a sacrifice made not only by the service member but also by the family waiting at home. It strengthened my resilience, deepened my appreciation for military families, and showed me the perseverance required to support a loved one who serves our country. Watching my father also opened my eyes to another reality. His job involved long hours and physically demanding work, and over the years I've seen the toll it has taken on his body. As his daughter, it has been difficult knowing there was little I could do to help. Seeing someone I love struggle inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a difference in the lives of others. My experiences as a military child also introduced me to incredible military pediatricians who left a lasting impression on me. They always treated me with kindness, compassion, and patience, making every visit feel safe. They understood the unique experiences of military families, and they created an environment where I felt comfortable and cared for. I especially remember a time when I experienced joint pain in my hands and knees. Rather than simply treating my symptoms, my pediatricians reassured my family and me that they would find not only a solution for my pain but also its underlying cause. Their dedication showed me how deeply they cared. They viewed me as a whole person, giving me confidence and hope during a difficult time. Their compassion and commitment inspired me to pursue a career as a physician so I can provide that same level of care to others. Today, my goal is to become a pediatrician who provides that same sense of comfort and trust to every child I meet. I want children to feel excited to learn about their health instead of fearing a doctor's visit. I also hope to care for military families because I understand many of their sacrifices firsthand. As a Latina pursuing a career in medicine, I understand that I am entering a field where people with backgrounds like mine have historically been underrepresented. At times, there are stereotypes suggesting that people from minority communities cannot succeed in demanding fields such as STEM or medicine. Rather than discouraging me, those perceptions motivate me to work even harder. I hope my success demonstrates that determination, resilience, and passion matter far more than someone's background. I also hope to inspire younger students in my community to believe that careers in medicine are within their reach. Receiving this scholarship would ease a significant financial burden. Although I am fortunate to have much of my tuition covered, increasing credit hours and additional educational expenses continue to make college more difficult to afford. Despite earning my Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification, finding employment has been challenging. This scholarship would help cover future semesters, reduce my reliance on student loans, and allow me to focus on my education and preparation for medical school. Since medical school is already a major financial commitment, every opportunity to lessen that burden brings me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming the compassionate pediatrician who once inspired me!

I have always considered myself a kind and positive person. From a young age, I was taught the importance of treating others with care and respect. Even something as simple as the large green “Be Kind” sign outside my school served as a constant reminder, and I've carried that with me. Over time, kindness became part of who I am. I embody selflessness because I truly believe that even the smallest act of kindness can brighten someone’s day, while a greater act can change someone’s life. For me, selflessness often begins with simple, everyday actions. I make it a point to greet my friends and classmates with a smile or a hello, even if it seems small. A rough morning or a stressful situation can make it hard for someone to even want to be at school. I have come to understand that when someone goes too long without happiness, even pretending to smile becomes exhausting. If I can help lift that burden, even for a moment, then I feel like I have accomplished something meaningful. Helping others doesn’t just benefit them, but it also gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment in my life. My commitment to helping others has also shaped my future goals. I aspire to become a pediatrician because of the positive experiences I had with my own doctors growing up. They were not only knowledgeable but also kind, patient, and genuinely caring. They created an environment where I felt comfortable instead of afraid, and even excited for visits. That impact stayed with me. Every Saturday, volunteers help distribute food and clothing to individuals experiencing homelessness. I have assisted in preparing meal bags, organizing donations, and handing out food to those in need. Being part of this effort showed me how important it is to treat every person with dignity and compassion, regardless of their circumstances. I have also volunteered with Special Reach, an organization that hosts events for children and young adults with special needs. These events, such as movie nights or themed celebrations, create a space where participants can relax, have fun, and feel included. Spending time with them, like playing games, talking, and simply being present, has been incredibly rewarding. Additionally, I have volunteered at the children’s museum, where I helped manage activity stations and assist families. As a Spanish speaker, I was able to translate and guide families who needed help navigating the exhibits. Being able to bridge that language barrier allowed me to make their experience more enjoyable and accessible. Greetings, I am Brandy Alfaro and currently a senior in high school. I am kindhearted by nature, joyful, respectful, and very crafty. Outside of schoolwork, I also run in Cross Country (XC), and I play the flute in our school’s symphonic band and wind ensemble. Even though it’s a challenge to balance both activities, they add value to my life and challenge me to grow. My athletic journey began in 2nd grade, and from there my success in XC started getting better. By my freshman year, I was in great shape. Without expectations going in, I was selected to be in varsity! It started great because I was finishing top 20 and earning medals for myself. I was super proud of what I had accomplished that season, and most of all I had great personal record’s in running. Freshman year was my prime year where I made the most improvements in my run time. However, life had other plans and I had no idea what was to come next; beginning with my active duty military dad receiving orders to move to Texas. Now I had to be in a new school/state for my sophomore year of High school, making it hard to adapt to a new environment. For this reason, I decided that I would continue marching band but not XC. By doing this, I was able to acclimate to my new school and make new friends. Unfortunately, my junior year wasn’t the best for me physically because my body just felt terrible. I was later diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Despite this, I added Cross XC into my routine. However, my junior XC season was awful because I was nowhere near as fast as I was Freshman year. The progress I had made on myself was gone and I didn’t feel valuable to my team, leading to my morale being very low. I also did track that year, but it wasn’t any better. This upset me because I couldn’t prove the abilities I once had. Rather than quit, I turned this setback into motivation and kept going. As time went on, and after receiving medical treatment, I began feeling much better. I got a confidence boost and was excited for what my senior season would bring. Fortunately, this 2024 XC season went better than I could have hoped for where I jumped from the back of the pack back to the top 5 and earning medals, giving me confidence in myself once again. These challenges have shaped me into who I am today. The challenges that have come along the way have also earned me many positive relationships which have opened more opportunities, proving that anything can happen if you believe and push your way through. Before you know it, your accomplishments and goals are coming true…you just have to never give up. By surrounding yourself with those who love and support you, you’ll be motivated in many ways to keep going for your goal through hard work, determination, and most of all staying positive. For these reasons, I have learned to enjoy every moment and the achievements completed along my journey. Additionally, my experience has helped me guide the new freshmen that come into XC and band. Starting with the fact that despite seeming straightforward at first, these activities are tough and a strong commitment is required, especially when the hard times come. The junior members will have to grow through practice and hours of participation to understand the process, and therefore what steps to take to get back on their feet and come back stronger.

My business idea revolves around crafts, specifically creating rubber band and paracord bracelets. Since I was 11, I have enjoyed making jewelry for friends on special occasions. In high school, I decided to turn my passion into a money-making venture because I saw there was an interest in my products. In my sophomore year, I expanded my product line to include rubber band figurine keychains, known as loomigurumi, which is like crochet but with rubber bands. I crafted various figures like whales, cupcakes, and axolotls. I also focused on seasonal items, especially around Christmas, because that’s when sales peaked as gifts. I am very passionate about my business because I get to do something I love while gaining something from it. For me, it isn’t just about the money I am earning, but also about the happiness of my customers and making their day better. Additionally, I value the learning experience I am gaining from running a business. I've learned how to maintain a steady flow of products and to always have something available to sell. I have also learned about time management because I have to keep track of my custom orders and the money I am earning. Moreover, opening a small business has helped me see more opportunities and realize that it's not easy. I want to be an entrepreneur because it allows for more opportunities. To elaborate, I want to go to university and eventually become a pediatric doctor as well. By being an entrepreneur, I can help ensure that I can pay for college, as well as medical school. Another reason is that when I make my products, I can give them to my patients to make the little kids happy and brighten their day. By doing this, I hope to help remove the stigma that going to the doctor isn’t very scary! To be cautious, I will gift these items to older kids, as it will be safer. In recent years, there has been a rise in mental health and in one way or another, we’ve all experienced it. These setbacks should be learned to be like a step forward to a new world and should be welcomed instead of feared. Personally, my mental health struggled in sports and academically. I do cross country, a physical but also very mentally demanding sport. In 3 miles you work to maintain speed and place for your team. Winning a medal for yourself would be the greatest achievement. If you don’t feel confident or focused, the race became an uphill battle. I wasn’t always confident in myself and the race became more of a burden and I only suffered more. Cross country is highly about mental determination; you’ve got to believe the effort you trained for will work for not 100m like for other races, but instead for 3 miles. Until I became confident and didn’t doubt myself, I didn’t suffer as much and the races/runs became enjoyable. Similarly in school, it’s always striving towards top grades. If I wasn’t perfect for each class, then I felt like a failure. However, I realized any A is awesome and any more brings personal growth with great learning. Embracing this reality has allowed me to accept and be pleased with my grades. I’ve come to learn that any progress is worth celebrating! Adding on, my understanding of the world has come to bringing mental health awareness. To bring this awareness, conversations regarding mental health should happen whether it may be through parents, school counselors, trusted teachers, or even friends. Unfortunately, society and social media portrayals have often discussed mental health as a peculiar or indicative sign of weakness. However, this should not be true. With the advent of social media, we have become more interconnected than ever, providing countless opportunities for individuals to seek support when necessary. Mental health plays a vital role in both the development of children and the maturity of adults. Without stable mental health, individuals may find themselves trapped in a cycle of imagined scenarios, leading to constant fear and the inability to enjoy one’s life fully. This can interrupt one's ability to focus on crucial aspects of life such as school, sports, work, or maintaining relationships (like family and friends). Without stable mental health, individuals may hesitate to take risks or pursue their dreams when it matters most. To address these challenges, mental health programs within schools are imperative. By normalizing discussions about mental health through these programs, students, in particular, may feel better supported and relieved. To study the opinions of peers on this matter, I conducted a survey among my peers at school. The overall responses highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and support. For instance, one student emphasized the need for increased attention to mental health due to its prevalence in modern society. Another student, Jackeline H., said “Mental health is extremely important since it also affects your physical health and overall well-being and wellness”. Furthermore, the survey revealed a huge agreement on the necessity of more options for mental health support within schools. However, some respondents expressed concerns about the potential stigma associated with accessing these resources. This suggests the importance of normalizing discussions about mental health and destigmatizing seeking support, but also debunking such common myths. In conclusion, by normalizing discussions, implementing support programs, and advocating for greater awareness, individuals and organizations can contribute to creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for those dealing with mental health issues. Through these actions, we can work towards a society where mental health is prioritized, understood, and supported by everyone. These strategies not only help individuals dealing with mental health issues but also promote overall mental well-being for everyone; because my understanding is that mental health isn’t just for those who are dealing with it, but it’s so that everyone can have good mental health to live life to the fullest.
