Faith has always been an important part of my life, but I truly learned its power when I faced one of the hardest challenges I have ever experienced. When I was seventeen, I collapsed during soccer tryouts and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors discovered a misplaced artery near my heart and told me I needed open-heart surgery immediately. Hearing those words at such a young age filled me with fear and uncertainty. In that moment, my faith became the only thing I could hold on to.
Before my surgery, I prayed every day for strength and peace. I did not know what the outcome would be, but I believed that God had a plan for me. My family and I prayed together, asking for healing and courage. Those moments reminded me that even in the darkest situations, faith can bring light and comfort. Trusting in God helped me calm my fears and focus on staying strong through what was ahead.
The recovery process was long and painful. There were days when I felt weak and frustrated because I could not do simple things like walk without help or take deep breaths without pain. During those moments, I reminded myself that healing takes time and that every step forward, no matter how small, was part of God’s plan. Reading encouraging Bible verses and listening to gospel music helped me keep a positive mindset. My faith taught me to be patient and to believe that struggles are only temporary.
Over time, I began to notice progress. I could move more easily, breathe better, and regain my strength. Each small victory felt like a blessing. My faith grew stronger because I realized that God had carried me through something that once seemed impossible. Instead of questioning why this happened to me, I started to see it as a lesson in resilience, hope, and gratitude. I learned that faith is not just about praying when things are easy but about trusting when everything feels uncertain.
This experience changed my outlook on life. I now approach challenges with a sense of calm and confidence, knowing that faith will guide me through. It also taught me compassion for others who are struggling. When friends or classmates face difficulties, I share my story to remind them that faith and perseverance can help overcome anything. What I went through gave me the strength to encourage others and the wisdom to appreciate every moment.
Relying on my faith during that time helped me see my purpose more clearly. It showed me that my challenges can be used to inspire and help others who are hurting. I plan to carry that same belief into my future career and community work. No matter what obstacles come my way, I will continue to lean on my faith, trust in God’s plan, and keep moving forward with hope and determination.

Growing up, I always believed that education has the power to change lives. The right teacher can turn confusion into confidence and fear into motivation. Throughout my own journey, I have met educators who pushed me to aim higher and believe in myself even when things felt impossible. Their encouragement inspired me to want to do the same for others. My goal is to become an educator who not only teaches lessons from a book but also helps students see the lessons within themselves.
I have always been passionate about helping others learn. Whether it was tutoring classmates in math, explaining how computers work, or helping someone fix their device, I found joy in seeing their excitement when something finally clicked. That feeling of helping someone understand and succeed is what motivates me to pursue a career in education. I want to be a teacher who helps students discover their strengths, build confidence, and realize that their dreams are possible no matter where they start.
One of the most important lessons I learned came after facing a major challenge in my life. At seventeen, I underwent open-heart surgery after doctors found a misplaced artery near my heart. Recovery was long and difficult, but it taught me patience, strength, and empathy. During that time, I realized how powerful support and encouragement can be. My teachers checked in on me, helped me stay caught up with schoolwork, and reminded me that setbacks do not define your future. Their kindness showed me the difference an educator can make not only in academics but in someone’s life. That experience strengthened my desire to give back through teaching and mentorship.
As an educator, I plan to create a classroom environment that encourages creativity, curiosity, and resilience. I want students to feel safe expressing themselves, asking questions, and learning through trial and error. Education should not just be about memorizing facts; it should be about developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills that prepare students for the real world. I hope to use technology to make learning more interactive and inclusive, especially for students who might not have access to advanced tools at home.
Beyond the classroom, I want to help students see that their voices matter. I plan to start after-school programs that focus on leadership, community service, and career exploration. By giving students opportunities to explore their interests early, I can help them find confidence in their paths and understand the value of giving back to their communities.
Education has the power to open doors and create change. My goal as an educator is to open those doors for as many students as possible. I want to inspire them to believe in their abilities and to face challenges with courage and determination. If I can help even one student see their potential and follow their dreams, then I will know I have made a positive impact on the world.

Ever since I was a kid, I have loved figuring out how things work. When something broke, I never saw it as a problem. I saw it as a challenge. Whether it was an old game controller, a slow laptop, or even the family Wi-Fi, I enjoyed taking things apart, experimenting, and putting them back together in a better way. That curiosity eventually led to one of my proudest moments, when I used my growing tech and hacking skills to help others at my school.
It all started during my junior year of high school when our computer lab began having major issues. The school’s computers were running slowly, students kept getting kicked off the network, and no one could print their assignments on time. Teachers were frustrated, and it was beginning to affect classes that depended on the internet for projects. Since I had built and repaired computers at home before, one of my teachers asked if I could take a look. I agreed, excited to see if I could figure out the problem.
After spending a few afternoons troubleshooting, I discovered that the main issue was not just the old hardware. It was the network setup. The lab’s computers were sharing too much bandwidth on a single connection, which caused frequent lag and disconnections. Using what I had learned from online tutorials and tinkering at home, I reconfigured the lab’s router settings, updated the firmware, and helped reorganize the connection points to balance the network load. I also cleaned up unnecessary startup programs on the computers, freeing up memory and making them run faster.
When we tested the setup the next day, the difference was amazing. The computers booted faster, websites loaded instantly, and students could finally print their work without waiting forever. My teacher was thrilled, and word spread around school that I was the one who fixed the lab. Soon after, other students started asking for help with their laptops and phones, and I began running small tech sessions during lunch to teach people how to protect their devices from viruses, speed them up, and use simple coding tools.
The experience taught me a lot more than just how to fix a network. It showed me the power of using knowledge to make life easier for others. I realized that technology is not just about machines. It is about helping people connect, learn, and grow. Seeing my classmates smile and thank me for something I loved doing made me realize that this was more than a hobby. It was a purpose.
That moment sparked my passion for cybersecurity and inspired me to study computer science in college. I want to use my skills to protect people and systems on a larger scale, defending against cyber threats while continuing to teach and inspire others. Whether it is in a classroom, a community center, or a large company, I want to keep that same energy of curiosity and service alive.
Fixing those school computers may have started as a small project, but it showed me how powerful technology can be when used to help others. That experience turned my love of tinkering into a lifelong mission to make the digital world safer, smarter, and more connected for everyone.

From an early age, I was captivated by how technology connects, protects, and empowers people. Growing up in Clayton, Missouri, I was fortunate to have early access to computers and the internet, but I quickly realized that many young people, especially those from underserved communities, do not share the same opportunities. This realization, combined with my drive to protect and innovate within the digital space, inspired my goal to become a cybersecurity analyst at a Fortune 500 company and to create a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged youth enter the cybersecurity field.
However, my path toward this vision began with a life-changing challenge.
Just days after my seventeenth birthday, I collapsed during soccer tryouts after months of disciplined training. I had worked relentlessly to make the team, a goal I had missed the previous year. When I hit the ground, I could not breathe and my vision blurred. Moments later, I was in the hospital, where doctors discovered a misplaced artery near my heart. I underwent emergency open-heart surgery the next day. The following six months were the hardest of my life. I had to relearn how to perform basic tasks and rebuild my strength from the ground up.
Recovery tested me in ways I never expected. There were days when I felt frustrated, defeated, or unsure if I would ever feel like myself again. But I refused to give up. Each small victory, whether standing longer, walking farther, or breathing easier, reminded me that progress is not always about speed but about persistence. I discovered that resilience is not just enduring hardship; it is choosing to rise every time life knocks you down. That lesson has shaped my mindset ever since.
Today, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Cybersecurity at Georgia State University, maintaining a 3.5 GPA. As a collegiate member of the National Society of Black Engineers, I have strengthened my leadership and teamwork skills while deepening my knowledge of network infrastructure, digital forensics, and information assurance. My coursework has given me hands-on experience with real-world cybersecurity tools, preparing me to identify threats and defend critical systems in high-stakes environments.
Yet my vision extends beyond personal success. Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields, but it remains inaccessible to many aspiring students because of the high cost of training, certifications, and technology. I plan to change that by founding a nonprofit that provides free or low-cost cybersecurity education, mentorship, and financial support for certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Cisco CyberOps Associate, and Certified Ethical Hacker. By partnering with schools and community organizations, I want to expose students to this career path and show them that success in STEM is possible no matter their background.
The surgery that once threatened to stop my heart ultimately gave me purpose. It taught me that every challenge is a chance to grow stronger and that true success means using your strength to lift others. With your support, I will continue building a future where technology is secure, opportunity is accessible, and resilience is the foundation of every achievement.

How I Plan to Make a Positive Impact on the World
Growing up, I’ve always believed that technology should be a tool for empowerment—not a barrier. But as I became more immersed in my studies in computer science, specifically cybersecurity, I began to notice a recurring theme: access to opportunity in this field is far from equal. While some students grow up with early exposure to tech, coding camps, and professional mentors, many others—especially from under-resourced communities—never get the chance to even consider a career in cybersecurity. I plan to change that.
My dream is to start a nonprofit organization that opens doors for underrepresented and underserved youth who are interested in cybersecurity. This nonprofit would offer free workshops, mentorship programs, and access to entry-level certifications. My goal is not just to spark interest in cybersecurity but to provide tangible pathways into the field—whether that’s through internships, training for certifications like CompTIA Security+, or simply helping students understand what cybersecurity is and why it matters.
As a Black student navigating the world of tech, I’ve already seen how representation and guidance can shape a person’s confidence. Organizations like the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), which I’m proudly a member of, have given me a sense of belonging and purpose. Now, I want to pay that forward. My nonprofit would specifically focus on high school students and first-year college students who have the interest but lack the resources—students like the younger version of me who needed just one opportunity to realize their potential.
One idea I’m especially excited about is launching a “Cyber Starter Kit” initiative, where students receive refurbished laptops preloaded with cybersecurity learning tools and software, along with access to online courses and practice labs. For many, simply having the right device and internet access can make the difference between exploring a passion and abandoning it. I want to eliminate those obstacles.
But beyond equipment and technical training, I also want to create a community. Cybersecurity is a field that’s all about teamwork, trust, and problem-solving. I plan to build a mentorship network where professionals in the industry volunteer to guide students, review their resumes, help them with interview prep, and even walk them through real-world cyber scenarios. When students see people who look like them succeeding in the field, it makes success feel possible.
This mission is personal. I didn’t grow up with tech camps or coding tutors—I worked jobs at places like Target and Nordstrom to support myself while balancing school. I know what it’s like to work hard and still feel like you’re a few steps behind your peers. That’s why I want my nonprofit to feel less like a charity and more like a launchpad—a place where young people can see cybersecurity not as an unreachable dream, but as a real, rewarding career they can step into with confidence.
I’m currently pursuing my degree in computer science with a concentration in cybersecurity at Georgia State University, and I’ve maintained a strong GPA while staying involved in organizations that promote diversity in STEM. But for me, education is just the beginning. The real impact will come when I can use what I’ve learned to create opportunities for others.
Making a positive impact on the world doesn’t always mean changing everything all at once. Sometimes, it means giving someone the tools to change their own future—and then watching them go out and make a difference, too. That’s the kind of legacy I want to leave behind.

Mental health is something that a lot of people don’t talk about enough, especially teenagers. For a long time, I didn’t fully understand how important it was—until I had to face it myself. Dealing with mental health challenges in my own life and seeing people close to me go through it changed the way I see the world. It taught me how important it is to care for your mind, not just your body, and it has shaped my beliefs, relationships, and even what I want to do in the future.
At first, I didn’t really know how to handle stress, sadness, or anxiety. I thought I had to keep it all inside and stay strong all the time. But over time, I realized that pretending everything is fine only makes things worse. I started to learn that asking for help doesn’t make you weak—it makes you smart and brave. That was a big shift in how I think about mental health. Now, I believe it’s just as important as physical health, and everyone should take it seriously.
My experience with mental health also changed the way I treat people. I’ve become more understanding and patient because I know what it’s like to struggle silently. Sometimes people act a certain way not because they’re mean or don’t care, but because they’re going through something we can’t see. I try my best to listen more and judge less. This has made my friendships and family relationships stronger. I’ve learned that being there for someone—just listening or checking in—can really make a difference.
Mental health has also had a big impact on what I want to do in life. I’ve always been interested in technology, and I plan to major in Computer Science with a focus on Cybersecurity. But now, I also want to use my career to help others. Whether that means working on apps that support mental wellness or creating online spaces that are safer and more positive, I want my work in tech to have a real impact on people’s lives. I believe technology should not only solve problems, but also help people feel supported and connected.
I also hope to volunteer or speak to younger students one day about mental health and how to manage it. If more people talked about it openly, like we talk about sports or grades, maybe fewer people would feel alone. I want to help change the way people view mental health, especially in schools and in the Black community where it's sometimes still seen as a weakness.
In the end, mental health challenges have helped me grow. They taught me to be more self-aware, more kind, and more driven to help others. I’m still learning, but I now understand how important it is to take care of yourself and those around you—not just physically, but emotionally too.

Cancer is something that I had only heard about in school or on TV—until it became real in my life. When a close family member was diagnosed with cancer, everything changed. It was one of the hardest experiences my family has ever gone through. Even though it was painful, it taught me a lot about strength, patience, and the importance of supporting the people you love.
When my family member was first diagnosed, we were all shocked. One day everything seemed normal, and the next we were at doctor’s appointments, learning medical terms we had never heard before. It felt like the ground had shifted under us. There were a lot of questions and not many answers at first, and that made things even scarier. I saw how quickly life can change and how something like cancer affects not just the person who is sick but everyone around them.
Watching my family member go through treatment was tough. Chemotherapy and other treatments made them tired and weak, and sometimes it was hard to see them in pain. But even during those hard times, they stayed hopeful. They kept fighting, and that inspired me. It showed me what real strength looks like—not just being strong physically, but mentally and emotionally too.
My family had to come together more than ever before. We supported each other, took turns helping with meals and appointments, and made sure no one felt alone. It brought us closer, even though it was a difficult time. I also learned that it’s okay to be emotional. Sometimes I felt angry, sad, or helpless, but I realized those feelings are normal and it's better to talk about them than to keep them bottled up.
Through this experience, I’ve learned the value of empathy. I’ve learned to check on people, to listen more, and to be there even when I don’t have the right words. I’ve also realized how many families are going through the same thing, and it made me want to help others facing similar struggles. Whether it’s volunteering, raising awareness, or just being someone who understands, I want to be part of the support system for others the way people were for us.
Cancer is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but it taught me life lessons I will carry with me forever. I’ve learned how strong people can be, how important family is, and how to keep hope alive even in the darkest times. It made me grow up a little faster, but it also made me more caring, more aware, and more motivated to make a difference in the world.

Why I Chose STEM, My Career Goals, and My Community Service Ambitions
Technology has always felt like a superpower to me. The way it connects people, solves problems, and creates new possibilities is something that has always fascinated me. Instead of just using technology, I’ve always wanted to understand it—how it works, how it can be protected, and how it can be used to make a real difference. That’s what inspired me to pursue a STEM-related field, specifically Computer Science with a focus on Cybersecurity.
I chose Cybersecurity because I want to be a part of something that protects people. With so much of our world online now, it’s more important than ever to make sure people’s information and privacy are safe. I think it’s amazing that technology can do so much good, but I also understand that it comes with risks. I want to be someone who helps stop those risks and keeps the internet a safe place. The more I learn about Cybersecurity, the more excited I get about my future in this field.
One of my biggest career goals is to become a Cybersecurity Analyst or Ethical Hacker. I want to work with a company or organization that’s focused on stopping cyberattacks and helping people understand how to stay safe online. Later on, I would love to start my own company or nonprofit that teaches cybersecurity to students and families, especially in underrepresented communities. I believe everyone should have the tools to protect themselves online, no matter where they come from.
Along with building my career, I’m also very committed to giving back. Community service has always been a big part of my life. I’ve been a Youth Ambassador with 100 Black Men, and I’ve also participated in programs like the UMSL Bridge Program and NSBE Jr. These programs helped me learn, grow, and connect with others who look like me and are also interested in STEM. I know how much those experiences helped me, and I want to give that same kind of support to younger students.
In the future, I hope to volunteer at schools and community centers to help teach kids about STEM and technology. I also want to continue being involved in organizations like NSBE and the Leaders of Tomorrow program, because they show students what’s possible and give them real opportunities to succeed. My goal is to be someone others can look up to, just like I’ve looked up to mentors in my life.
Choosing a STEM field was easy for me because it combines my love for technology, my interest in solving problems, and my desire to help others. I’m excited to keep learning, growing, and one day making a real difference in both the tech world and my community.

My name is Brandon Wooten, and I’m a first-year college student studying Computer Science at Georgia State University. I’ve always had a strong interest in technology, and I plan to focus on cybersecurity. I’m passionate about protecting systems and people in today’s digital world, and I want to use my skills to make a difference in my community and beyond.
My path to this point has been shaped by many experiences, but one of the most personal and emotional ones was watching my grandmother battle cancer. I was young when she was first diagnosed, but I remember how strong she was, even on the hardest days. She was always the one who kept the family together. When she got sick, I saw how everything changed — not just for her, but for everyone around her. Watching someone you love go through chemotherapy and hospital visits is painful, especially when you feel like there’s nothing you can do to fix it.
That experience had a big impact on me. It taught me to value life, to not take time with loved ones for granted, and to always keep pushing forward, even during tough times. My grandmother never gave up, and that attitude stuck with me. Even now, I carry that strength with me in everything I do — in school, at work, and in my personal goals.
Cancer also showed me how important support systems are. I saw how doctors, nurses, and even neighbors stepped up to help. It inspired me to want to be someone others can rely on too. While I may not work in the medical field, I believe I can still help people in other ways — by keeping them safe online, by protecting their privacy, and by working on technology that can make life better.
Being part of programs like NSBE Jr, the UMSL Bridge Program, and the Leaders of Tomorrow has helped me grow and build confidence. I’ve learned how to think critically, solve problems, and work as a team. These experiences have helped me prepare for the career I want, and they’ve reminded me that I can still make a difference — just like the people who helped my grandmother made a difference for us.
Now that I’m in college, I’m focused on building the skills I need for the future. I want to be someone who gives back, who uses technology for good, and who brings strength and hope to others — just like my grandmother did for me.

Days after I turned 17, I faced a setback in my life that would drastically change me. This event prevented me from participating in any sports for six months and caused me to relearn basic living skills.
During the summer before tryouts I wanted to make sure I made the team so I trained and worked out five days a week to ensure I would make the team. I disciplined myself to a point where I didn’t hangout with anyone because I knew doing this would distract me from reaching my goal. I knew this was what I needed to do to achieve my goal from my previous experiences that I found success. Each week that I trained I saw instant progress being able to do things i wasn’t able to do before and I felt less out of breath during exercises. Sometimes there were days I felt I wanted to skip a day of training and rest but I always kept going because I realized to be the best you gotta work overtime. Days before tryouts I noticed my confidence levels were higher then ever as I knew I had made the team. It was the day of tryouts. I woke up excited because today was the day I was able to show off all my hard work and prove to myself the importance of discipline.
When I got there I started warming up and getting myself ready. Minutes later the coach arrived and assigned me to a mini soccer match drill. As the first game started I started playing extremely well scoring the first goal and assisting my teammates. When the coach stopped the drill he announced we were the winner. Once the second game started I sat out because I was feeling pain in my chest. Seconds later, I collapsed, unable to breathe with blurry vision. The medic came over and called the ambulance. Once they arrived I was put on a stretcher, put in the vehicle, and sent to the hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, doctors started instantly running tests on me and asking questions about what happened. After multiple tests, they discovered that my artery by my heart wasn’t in the right place causing me to have chest pain and shortness of breath. They told me that I needed surgery to fix this problem and immediately scheduled surgery the next day. The day of the surgery, I was very nervous because this was my first big surgery since I was a child. After the surgery was over, I noticed it affected how I operate in my day to day life causing me to have mood swings and changes in my personality.
What I learned from having open heart surgery was to have perseverance during the recovery process because there were times where I felt I wanted to give up and not do those rehab drills, but I continued to push through despite it being difficult to achieve the success I wanted. I'm glad I faced this obstacle because it allowed me to get the surgery I needed so I could perform at my best ability and not suffer from a setback. During the process of recovery, I started to build a better connection with my loved ones on a deeper level causing me to value them more. Their support helped me reduce my stress levels and improved my self confidence during the process.
My advice to someone in this position is to believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams and keep God first in all you do in life....

I firmly believe that success varies for each individual, shaped by their unique perspectives and life experiences. Success, to me, is both a goal and a mindset, something one strives to achieve by setting and reaching personal milestones.
My distinct mindset stems from being raised in a single family household, where the value of hard work was ingrained from an early age. I carry the belief that success is earned through dedicated effort rather than handed down. This mindset guides my approach to endeavors, be it in academics, sports, or summer jobs. I am convinced that this work ethic will lead to success in a generation where such commitment may be less prevalent.
I anticipate that those who work hardest and set ambitious goals will not only achieve success in their careers but will also excel in their daily lives. Moreover, by sharing their knowledge of success, they can positively influence the next generation of students.
This mindset enables adaptability and a holistic approach, which I believe will contribute to sustained success by navigating complexities with a well-rounded perspective.
Success, to me, is the culmination of continuous growth, fulfillment, and positive impact.
Differentiating from peers lies in my focus on embracing challenges as opportunities, fostering resilience, and prioritizing a balance between personal and professional development.
This mindset enables adaptability and a holistic approach, which I believe will contribute to sustained success by navigating complexities with a well-rounded perspective.
I would honored to be a recipient of this scholarship for 2024
