My name is Brandon Kalley, and I am a senior at Raritan High School in Hazlet, New Jersey. In college I intend to study for a bachelors degree in the field of political science. I am doing so because politics is an area which shapes each and every single one of our lives in this country, and, if done properly, could result in significant improvements to the way of life of each and every American.
Politics is a field that is filled with such potential. However, it is easy to find it squandered by politicians who exploit their positions for personal gain. Many parts of the way this country operates are inherently broken for nearly every American, save for those at the top, and difficult work is required to fix it. Understanding the way the system operates is a way towards fixing the issues at the root of it. If one can understand the political issues which impact millions of Americans in a detailed way, they can work on the major reform that is desperately needed in this country.
A main way of achieving an understanding of American politics is in the field of political science. Through a political science major, you receive a full understanding of the American political system, and how it impacts the over 300 million American citizens, along with the impact felt over the globe. Quite simply, fixing systems requires an intricate understanding of those systems. If not, you may not truly be able to understand the obstacles you are up against.
Another reason why a political science major is important is in its classification as a humanities major. There is quite a benefit to studying in the humanities. This is because in the way modern societies are formed, the humanities majors can provide an understanding of the most basic, but also the most important aspects of modern society. As such, humanities majors are of very high importance, and are particularly beneficial. If societal reform can occur, an understanding of the humanities is essential.
In conclusion, I intend to study political science while in college because I recognize how important an understanding of the American political system is. It is a system that shapes both Americans and citizens across the globe, and is also a system with significant inequalities. In order to work to fix a system, you must first understand it. An understanding of the humanities is also essential to understanding modern society.
