Bio

Hi, My name is Brandi Jackson. I’m a senior at Owings Mills High School. I’ve committed to attend college at George Mason University this fall, and will be pursuing a degree in Criminology. My goal is to become a homicide detective and help solve crimes. Crime negatively impacts our communities and prevents people from feeling safe. It’s been a goal of mine to make a difference in society and help foster safety and security in our neighborhoods especially for children to grow, develop and learn in a safe environment. Thank you for your consideration for me for this or any scholarship that will help me pursue my goals and career. Brandi Jackson

My Name is Brandi Jackson, I’m a High school graduate from Owings Mills High School located in northern Maryland. During my 4 years at Owings Mills High I maintained a 3.5 gpa average and was a consistent honor roll student. I will be attending George Mason University this fall to pursue a degree in Criminology, and criminal justice. Community service and volunteer work is something I’ve always enjoyed doing throughout my life. I remember times earlier in my life when I didn’t have. And being to embarrassed or proud to ask others for basic necessities. So those thoughts are what drives me to help others, do for others. I Donate food at our local food bank by contributing consistently to the food drive my church does to help those in need in our community. Our high school has a sport/activity called bocce’ for special needs students or kids with autism to participate and compete against other similar students but from other schools. I would help them practice, and prepare for their upcoming competitions. Help them develop not only their skills in that sport but also their confidence and self esteem. It was a great feeling to be apart of something special. Watching other kids grow in their selves. Develop a sense of belonging and being part of a team. My life long goal as long as I can remember is to be a law enforcement officer and more specifically a detective. Safety and security in our community is something that is very important to me. And especially so for people in our community to see people that look like us in prominent roles such as law enforcement, and safety and security. Another goal of mine is to not only become a law enforcement officer and detective but to mentor, guide, and encourage youth from our community to get involved in volunteer work. To get involved in community activities, and to give back and help those less fortunate and in need. You never know the impact you can have on others. I remember donating some of my old clothes to a clothing drive my church sponsored just a week before the new school year started and teenage girls my age being excited and happy to get clothes for school that they or they’re parents weren’t able to provide. I felt bad that they were in that position but also proud I was able to help and make a difference. Thank you for the time you allocated to reading my essay and I hope you would consider me for this award. Brandi Jackson

This is an essay that I’m excited about writing. I say that because playing sports in high school has brought me so much joy and great memories during my high school years. My name is Brandi Jackson, and I’m a recent high school graduate from Owings Mills High School. I Transferred to Owings Mills High at the beginning of my freshman year. Moving to a new school was very difficult for me in the beginning. Along with being nervous about starting new at a new school, I was going into high school which in its self was a scary thought. I was very shy and quiet and the first few weeks I struggled to find myself and make friends at this new school. One class I really enjoyed was gym class and I was able to make my first friend. I’ve always enjoyed playing sports so gym is where I began to find my comfort zone and enjoyed the different sports we’d play during gym. I was always ultra competitive no matter what sport we were playing and it caught the attention of my gym teacher, Coach Martin, who also happened to be the varsity coach for the softball team. She encouraged me to try out for softball. I told her I’ve never played before but she said she’d teach me and thought with my competitive spirit I’d be really good at it. She was right. I instantly fell in love with playing softball. I was voted most valuable player of the team my first year of playing, despite never having played previously, over girls that had been playing for years. Softball brought me out of my shell and helped me grow and make a lot of friends. It’s also taught me how to be apart of a team. How to depend on others, while having others depend on you. How to compete at a high level, but also be humble and congratulate your opponent if they won and be a good sportsman. I learned the importance of balancing school life and keeping your grades good so you would remain eligible to stay on the team because you’re teammates are depending on you. Also making sure home responsibilities aren’t neglected as well. I played other sports in high school as well but softball by far was my favorite and brought me the most joy. From the friendships I gained, the respect from the coaches and opponents I gained, it really helped my enjoy my years at Owings Mills High.
