    Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
My name is Brae’Yana, and I am a high school senior, student-athlete, and aspiring pediatric nurse. I have worn several hats in my life, including big sister, caretaker, and student-athlete, and each role has taught me the value of compassion, hard work and perseverance in the face of hardship. As someone who has handled academics, sports, and a part-time job, I feel a strong connection to Kalia D. Davis’ legacy. Her story is both amazing and heartbreaking, and would be an honor to carry on that legacy through this scholarship. I have competed in cheer, basketball, and volleyball throughout high school. Each activity has presented me with something different: precision in cheering, resilience in basketball, and trust in volleyball. The commitment required to show up each day, collaborate, and improve with a team has shaped my character and work ethic. At the same time, I have maintained high grades while completing AP-level coursework. I know how to prioritize, maintain discipline, and set a good example, whether on the court or in the classroom. Aside from academics and athletics, I have taken on notable responsibilities at home. I work to help support my family, relieving financial pressure on my mother so she can focus on caring for my younger autistic brother and younger sister. It has not always been simple, but it has taught me to be independent, selfless, and more mature than personal accomplishments; it is about being present for yout community and family, and being a source of strength when others need it most. I endured the tragic death of a friend due to gun violence at an early age. My classmate would have been a senor this year, participating in the same events. Losing someone so young and full of potential highlights the significance of cherishing every moment. These life events motivated me to pursue a career in nursing. I want to dedicate my life to helping others feel cared for, heard, and safe furing their moments of weakness. Like Kalia, I believe in striving for excellence in everything I do. I want to be the nurse who not only treats physical symptoms but also provides empathy, encouragement, and security to patients and their families. Nursing is my way of carrying on that heritage of kindness, leadership, and service. Aside from my academic and professional aspirations, I firmly believe in balance and joy. I enjoy writing, particulary creative essay and personal objectives. I find peace in journaling and exploring my thoughts with words. I admire seeing psychological films because they test my thinking and keep me on edge. These simple pleasures keep me grounded and remind me that life is intended to be enjoyed passionately and playfully. Receiving the Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship would be more than financial support- it would be a symbol of everything I stand for and pray to become. It would affirm that hard work, preserverance, and compassion do not go unnoticed. This scholarship would help ease the financial burden of college and allow me to focus on my studies and clinical involvement without worrying about how I will afford the next step to becoming a pediatric nurse. Kalia lived a life of greatness, kindness, and purpose, and I hope to honor her memory by living out those same values every day. Thank you for the consideration.
    Anthony Bruder Memorial Scholarship
My name is Brae’Yana, and I am a student-athlete who has dedicated my high school years to academic and athletic excellence. I have competed in cheer, basketball, and volleyball, and each sport has helped shape who I am- not just as an athlete, but as a person with a plan for future. Balancing academics and athletics emphasized the importance of dedication, discipline, and time management, all of which have had a positive imapact on my professional objectives and how I combat life’s challenges. Being a student-athlete requires more than just turning up to practice and competing on game day. It is about pushing your body and mind to their limits, stayling committed even when you are fatigued, and learning how to lead and support people effectively. Sports provided me with the value of accountability, communication, and teamwork. These are not just skills that help you win games; they are characteristics that translate directly into the real world, particularly in the healthcare industry, where I envision my future. I intend to become a pediatric nurse. I wish to help children in some of their most vulnerable moments, just as I have supported my teammates on and off the court. Watching my stepfather battle with PTSD after serving in the Army was one of the first times I witnessed the real-world impact of compassionate, consistent care. It reminded me that I want to provide healing and stability for others. I have always had a nurturing mentality, and I believe nursing is the ideal combination of emotional strength, science, and service- three subjects I highly respect. Beingn a student-athlete has better equipped me for this career path. Juggling clubs, games, schooling, and a part-time job taught me how to cope with stress, keep organized, and never create excuses. In addition to my responsibilities, I provide financial support for my family. I try to relieve some of the load on my mother so she can concentrate on my younger brother, who has autism, and my younger sister. It is not easy, but it has given me a feeling of purpose. I have learned how to prioritize, how to be present for those I care about, and how to persevere in the face of adversity. Aside from sports, I have a few interests that help keep me connected. I have always been interested in narrative and creative writing. Writing essays or journal entries helps me process my thoughts and reflect on my experiences. Horror films, particularly the Saw series, are another area of interest for me. I enjoy thrills, plot twist, and pyshological depth of the characters. It serves as a reminder that life is not always black and white- a lesson I have learned through nursing and sports. Both fields need you to dig deeper, understand people’s suffering, and respond with empathy and intelligence. All of these aspects of my life- being a student-athlete, working hard for my family, and aspiring to a career in nursing- have formed me into a focused, motivated, and passionate young lady. I have learned that success is often determined by passion and work-ethic rather than talent. I am eager to use all I have learned in my next chapter, where I intend to make a long-term difference in children's lives, both personally and in healthcare.

Consider getting up one morning and being unable to speak. For the first several years of my life, I felt like my voice did not matter. Sometimes, a single story has the power to change the way we view the world- and "Freedom Writers” was that story for me. The movie “Freedom Writers” had a significant impact on my perspective on resilience, education, and the power of storytelling. Based on a true story, the film follows Erin Gruwell, a determined teacher who inspires her less fortunate students through writing and self-expression. Experiencing this movie caused me reflect on my own life, my challenges, and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. It reshaped my understanding of the role education plays in overcoming obstacles and inspired me to use my own experiences to uplift others. One lesson I took from “Freedom Writers” is the idea that no individual’s circumstances define their future. The students in the film faced immense hardships, from gang violence to poverty and discrimination. Many of them had been written off by their community, labeled as troublemakers or lost causes. However, through their teacher’s eyes she saw her students as rising stars, and they proved that they were capable of success. This resonated deeply with me because I have faced issues in my own life that made me question my potential. Like the students in the film, I have encountered setbacks that sometimes made me feel like giving up. But “Freedom Writers” reminded me that my struggles do not make me—instead, they can serve as motivation to push forward and create a better future. “Freedom Writers” showed the power of education as a tool for change. Erin Gruwell did not just teach her students how to read and write; she gave them a voice. Through journaling, they were able to express their pain, fears, and dreams. This showed me that education is not just about learning facts or passing tests; it is about empowerment. It is a way to break cycles of hardship and create opportunities where none previously existed. This realization strengthened my own commitment to my education, knowing that it is my key to success. It also reinforced my desire to pursue nursing, a career where I can use my knowledge to make a true difference in people’s lives. Beyond education, “Freedom Writers” taught me about the importance of empathy and understanding- an important characteristic in nursing. Erin Gruwell never judged her students for their backgrounds or past mistakes. Instead, she took the time to listen to them and understand their struggles. Because of this, she was able to build genuine relationships with them and help them gain confidence. This has influenced the way I interact with others in my own life. I have learned that everyone has a story, and sometimes, all they need is for someone to listen. Whether in my personal relationships or my future career in nursing, I want to embody that same level of compassion, making sure that the people around me feel heard and valued. “Freedom Writers” was a source of inspiration that shaped my view of life. It taught me that no matter how difficult life may seem, I have the power to rise above my circumstances and create a future filled with purpose. It reinforced my passion for using education as a tool for change and my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Just like the students in the film, I have my own story to tell, and I now see my challenges not as limitations, but as stepping stones toward success.
    First-Gen Flourishing Scholarship
As a child, I believed I had life figured out: my friends, my career, my schooling, and my fate. However, at the age of seventeen, my world was turned upside down, and I was faced with the reality that success and stability would always be fleeting unless grounded in a deeper connection with someone greater than myself. I came to understand that true success is not just about personal achievement- it is about the strength to overcome adversity and the willingness to grow through hardship. I could write about a lot of my life's triumphs, but I think the most significant one is that, even as a young adult, I still strive for greatness. This experience deeply influenced my perspective on education. I no longer see education as a requirement for success, but as an essential to life as we make sense of it. It has given me the inspiration to pursue nursing, a career that allows me to serve others with compassion and purpose. As previously mentioned, I started to doubt the career path I should take. As I go about my daily life, I have come to understand who I am and how nursing fits into it. Furthermore, I am confident that genuine friendships will be formed along the journey. I want to be in the company of people who are compassionate. I plan to use my nursing career to impact my community. I plan to inspire young black women who desire to pursue a career in health services. I want to demonstrate to my six-year-old sister that despite our circumstances, we can succeed and make a difference. I want to be a role model for my sister and our family's generation. I will advocate for better healthcare access in smaller areas and educate people to improve well-being in my community. I plan to use my education to positively impact my community by providing quality healthcare, advocating for those in need, and inspiring others to find strength in their own struggles. My eighteen year journey has taught me that life’s challenges are not meant to break us into individuals capable of making a meaningful difference in the world. My struggles have fueled my passion for education and my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. By pursuing a career in nursing, I aim to turn my hardships into a source of strength, using my knowledge and skills to provide compassionate care and advocate for those in need. I now embrace the uncertainties of life with confidence, knowing that resilience, faith, and education will guide me toward a future where I can positively impact my community and beyond.
Rev. Herman A. Martin Memorial Scholarship
Growing up, I witnessed my mother exert herself beyond limits I never knew existed. She worked three jobs while attending school, determined to create a better life for us. My grandmother stepped in to care for me, ensuring I had the love and care I needed while my mother worked tirelessly. Her strength and determination instilled an unshakable work ethic and an understanding that success is earned, not given. My mother's dedication became my inspiration, shaping my determination to work as hard in my own life. My determination and work ethic is shown through academics, clubs, and sports while being employed. My mother’s strength taught me that hard work is not just about personal success; it is about helping others. Watching her come home exhausted yet determined inspired me to choose a career where I could make a difference in lives- Nursing. Nursing embodies the spirit of care and sacrifice. This choice of field is more than a profession to me; it is a calling. The ability to provide care, comfort, and support to patients during their most vulnerable moments is what I find fulfilling. I am drawn to the idea of working as a pediatrichea nurse, where compassion and skills can make a difference in a child’s outcome. I will aim to develop the skills needed to provide life-saving care while offering emotional support to both patients and their families. Beyond the clinical or hospital setting, I plan to use my nursing career to impact my community. I plan to inspire young black women who desire to pursue a career in health services. I will advocate for better healthcare access in smaller areas and educate people to improve well-being in my community. As a nurse, one priority is to make a lasting impact by advocating for mental health awareness and holistic patient care. Many people struggle with both mental and physical health issues but lack access to proper resources. I plan to mend this gap by promoting education on mental health, encouraging open conversations, and connecting patients with the support they deserve. Given this opportunity, I will work on initiatives that address healthcare disparities, ensuring that each patient-regardless of background- receives the compassionate, high quality care they deserve. Through these efforts, I aim to heal and empower individuals to take charge of their health. Faith plays a significant impact in my journey to becoming a nurse, impacting others with compassion, kindness, and dedication. I feel that nursing is not just a career but a calling from God to be his hands and feet in the world- bring comfort, healing and hope to those in need. I want to reflect God’s love by treating every patient with dignity and respect, no matter their background or circumstances. I hope to be a source of spiritual encouragement, offering prayers and words of faith to those who seek it. By integrating faith into my practice, I believe this will make a deeper impact on the lives of those I serve. Receiving this scholarship wpuld not only help me acheive my academic goals but also permit me to focus on becoming the best nurse I know I can be, without financial stress. I can dedicate myself to my studies, clinical experiences, and community service initiatives full-time with this scholarship. Nursing is more than a career path for me- it is my way of making a lasting impact in the world, one patient at a time. Thank you for your consideration.
