I believe I am unique because I am enthralled with finance and want to help others succeed. As someone who enjoys learning about finance, I believe that I possess qualities that set me apart from others. Firstly, my curiosity and desire to understand the intricacies of money and investments drive my passion for finance. I am always eager to learn about new financial concepts and investment opportunities.
Managing my finances effectively requires a high level of discipline and responsibility, which I take very seriously. I make very difficult decisions and do not spend money on anything other than required expenses, such as gas to commute to work, in order to achieve my long-term financial goals and pay for college. This quality sets me apart from those who are content with simply accepting financial outcomes without understanding the underlying factors that led to them.
I also am developing a strong analytical skill set, which allows me to understand financial concepts such as risk, return, and valuation. This skill helps me make informed financial decisions and evaluate the performance of various financial instruments. Additionally, I have a creative problem-solving ability that allows me to identify new opportunities and create innovative financial solutions to help myself and others succeed financially.
Lastly, I possess a strong work ethic and a desire to constantly improve my skills and knowledge. The financial industry is constantly evolving, and I am always eager to stay up-to-date with the latest developments. This quality sets me apart from those who are content with maintaining the status quo and "getting by".
But the reason I am unique is not that I have the drive to succeed. It is because once I obtain the success I am aiming for, I want to help others with their financial problems and create financial solutions to help others reach their goals. Specifically, I want to help others who have little to no financial education and people in underserved communities create a financial foundation and set them up for success.
But why do I want to help others save for their futures and properly prepare themselves? I want to help them because I will be giving them the help my parents never had. My parents never learned the proper way to budget and save for the future and other countless financial topics. When I was about 5 years old, I had to witness them lose the house my father built due to bankruptcy. And to this day they do not properly save or budget for the future. And have no savings for their countless years of hard work due to excessive expenditures on wants instead of needs. This has further fueled my work ethic and strict saving habits. And I know there are many others in my community who need the help my parents need.
In conclusion, my passion for finance has helped me to develop a unique set of qualities that I believe set me apart from others. My curiosity, discipline, analytical skills, creativity, and work ethic have all contributed to my desire to work in the financial industry. But I have to dedicate all my aspirations and habits to my parents. They have instilled proper financial habits in me by watching them suffer and struggle. But they have worked hard their entire lives, and throughout all their struggles, they have always been thankful. And there is nothing I admire more than hard work and a humble attitude combined.

My name is Brady Miller. As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education has always been a dream of mine. However, the financial constraints have been a significant barrier in my academic journey. Hence, I am writing to apply for the Nelson Scholarship to help me pursue my educational goals.
Both of my parents did not go to college nor did any of my immediate family members. My parents would work day and night seven days a week until I was about 13 in order to take care of me and my sister. Eventually, I had to see them crumble financially and emotionally while filing for bankruptcy and having the house my father built with his own hands taken away from them. Throughout my childhood, they have tried to give me the best financial advice they could but even after years of life experience they still do not understand most of the core financial concepts. They have always emphasized the importance of education and hard work. Since my first years of school, they have motivated me to push my grades as high as I could and apply myself. I want to break the chain and achieve something nobody in my family has achieved.
Therefore, I am pursuing my undergraduate in Finance from Boise State University in order to be able to help individuals to better manage their finances and prevent my community from struggling as my parents did. However, their improper financial management has made it challenging as they have no savings to allocate to my tuition at all. As a result, I have been working while attending high school and prioritizing saving every penny except for gas to support my educational expenses.
Despite the financial difficulties, I have maintained a high GPA and actively demonstrated my commitment to my education. I have taken college courses throughout high school, volunteered for community service programs, and helped my struggling peers in subjects such as Math and Chemistry. These experiences have not only helped me grow as an individual but also enhanced my interpersonal and leadership skills.
With the Nelson Scholarship, I will be able to focus more on my academic and personal development without the constant worry of financial instability. This scholarship will enable me to pay for my tuition, textbooks, and other academic-related expenses, which will significantly reduce my financial burden. This scholarship will also allow me to further dedicate myself to internships and college extracurriculars relating to my major in order to obtain more education and work experience.
I am confident that this scholarship will not only help me pursue my educational goals but also inspire me to give back to the community. I aspire to use my education and skills to contribute to the betterment of society and make a positive impact on people's lives. In conclusion, I am immensely grateful for this opportunity to apply for the Nelson Scholarship. If granted, I promise to make the most of it by dedicating myself to my academic pursuits. Thank you for considering my application.
Learner Scholarship for High School Seniors
I am pursuing a college degree because I know it is something I have always wanted to do. I genuinely enjoy learning about a vast variety of topics, but I do really look forward to the idea of focusing in on one topic and mastering it. My desired degree is in Marketing, and I love how it is always a challenge every single day and it is impossible to perfect since it is ever-changing. I love how you truly have to use every type of learning and application every single day, so you will never be bored of your job. Overall, I love learning about topics and challenging myself in order to not only improve my knowledge, but to improve my discipline, patience, and work ethic all simultaneously.
But there is another reason beyond my own why I want to pursue a degree, both of my parents never had the option to go to college because of a lack of funding for college and having enough money to support themselves. They had to go into the workforce in order to survive and keep their feet on the ground. I would be a first-generation college student for my immediate family and one of only a couple of people to go to college in my entire family on both sides. My parents have always been my motivators, they are the ones that push me to be the greatest I can be. They have always wanted me to go to college and have always motivated me to get the highest grades I can and better myself. Therefore, college to me is not a goal of mine, it is a requirement. Both of my parents had to work overtime every single week while I was growing up and now they finally get to have days off and relax. And the last thing I want to do is put them in debt paying for my college and my responsibility. And that is why I apply for scholarships, push myself to a 4.0 and beyond, and make connections with college admissions advisors and college fairs at my school. I'm pursuing a degree to achieve the fruits of not only my but my parent’s labor.
My goal in the future is to graduate with my bachelor's in Marketing and live a comfortable life and spend time with my family. And take care of my parents with the surplus income I have, in order to pay them back for everything they have done for me. My father always told me when I was younger "Don't make the mistakes me and your mother did after high school". Most weeks he would work dusk to dawn 7 days a week and would still make enough time to take care of me, my sister, and my mother. He inspires and has inspired me more than any other thing in this world. So why am I pursuing a college degree? To be like him, to work as hard as I can, to develop myself, and to achieve greatness.
