Bio

Hi, I’m Blen, an international relations student passionate about human rights, advocacy, and community impact. My interest in this field was shaped by my exposure to conflict and injustice in Ethiopia, which inspired me to better understand how political systems affect people’s lives. I value growth and stepping outside of my comfort zone, and I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself through academics, leadership, and new experiences. Through volunteering and campus involvement, I’ve developed a strong commitment to supporting others and creating spaces where people feel heard and represented. In the future, I hope to pursue a career in law or public service, where I can advocate for marginalized communities and contribute to building more equitable systems. I am motivated not just by personal success but by the difference I hope to make in the communities I serve.

New Jersey New York First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college graduate would represent more than just earning a degree. It would symbolize breaking a cycle and creating new opportunities not only for myself, but for my family and future generations. Coming from a background where navigating higher education is not always straightforward, every step I take in college has required determination, independence, and resilience. Graduating would mean that those challenges were worth it, and that I’ve built a path that others around me can follow. As someone who has had to figure out many aspects of college on my own, I’ve learned how to advocate for myself, seek out opportunities, and stay motivated even when things feel uncertain. Being first-generation has pushed me to be resourceful and intentional about my goals. It has also given me a strong sense of responsibility to make the most of the opportunities I have, knowing that they are not easily accessible to everyone. My extracurricular activities have played a major role in shaping who I am today. Through my involvement in campus organizations and volunteer work, I’ve developed leadership, communication, and teamwork skills that I carry with me in all aspects of my life. Being part of student organizations has taught me how to collaborate with others, take initiative, and contribute to something larger than myself. It has also helped me step outside of my comfort zone, especially as someone who is naturally more introverted. Volunteering, in particular, has strengthened my commitment to giving back to my community. It has shown me the importance of being present, listening to others, and offering support where it’s needed. These experiences have shaped my perspective and reinforced my desire to pursue a path where I can continue helping others. Beyond my own journey, becoming a first-generation college graduate would allow me to be a source of guidance and support for others who are navigating similar paths. I want to use my experiences to mentor students, share resources, and help make the college process feel less overwhelming. Representation and access matter, and I hope to be someone who not only succeeds, but actively helps others believe that they can too. Ultimately, becoming a first-generation college graduate would be a defining milestone in my life. It would reflect not only my hard work, but also my ability to overcome challenges and grow through them. More importantly, it would position me to open doors for others, whether through mentorship, advocacy, or simply by showing that it is possible to succeed despite the obstacles.
