If given the opportunity, I would focus on improving mental health awareness and access to resources in my community. Mental health is an issue that often goes unnoticed or unaddressed, yet it affects so many people, especially young individuals like myself. Growing up, I witnessed friends, family members, and classmates struggle with anxiety, depression, and stress, often feeling like they had nowhere to turn. Unfortunately, mental health is still stigmatized, and many people suffer in silence. I want to change that by creating safe spaces for conversations, offering educational resources, and advocating for better mental health support in schools and community centers. One of my main goals would be to organize mental health workshops in schools and local organizations. These workshops would educate students, parents, and educators about recognizing signs of mental health struggles, where to seek help, and how to support one another. Many people don’t realize that mental health is just as important as physical health, and by spreading awareness, we can start breaking down barriers of stigma. I would also work to bring in professionals, such as therapists and counselors, to speak to young people and provide guidance. Sometimes, hearing from an expert can make a huge difference in helping someone realize they are not alone. Additionally, I would advocate for more accessible mental health resources in schools. Many schools have guidance counselors, but they are often overwhelmed with academic responsibilities, leaving little time for students in crisis. I would push for the implementation of peer support programs, where students could be trained in active listening and emotional support, giving their classmates a comfortable and approachable option to talk about their feelings. I would also encourage partnerships between schools and mental health organizations to provide free or low-cost counseling for students who need it. Beyond schools, I want to utilize social media and digital platforms to spread awareness about mental health. Many young people turn to social media when they feel isolated, so creating an online space dedicated to mental health discussions, personal stories, and professional advice could have a significant impact. By using technology to connect with others, we can create a support system that extends beyond physical locations and reaches people who may not feel comfortable speaking out in person. Improving mental health awareness and resources is important to me because I have personally seen the effects of untreated mental health struggles. I have had friends who felt lost and unsupported, and I know that if they had access to better resources, they could have received the help they needed sooner. No one should feel like they have to suffer alone, and I believe that by taking steps to promote education, support, and accessibility, we can create a community that prioritizes well-being. If given the opportunity, I would dedicate my efforts to making mental health a priority in my community. A healthier community is a stronger community, and when people have the support they need, they are more likely to succeed in all areas of life. By improving mental health awareness and access, we can foster a culture of understanding, empathy, and resilience—one where no one feels alone in their struggles.

I still remember the night I sat in my bedroom, overwhelmed by the weight of college applications, volleyball recruiting deadlines, and trying to keep up with my studies. I was ready to give up, thinking I wasn’t cut out for it all. It was in that moment, when I felt the most defeated, that my faith became a lifeline. I knelt and prayed, asking for guidance and strength. The next morning, I woke up with a renewed sense of purpose, driven by the belief that God was guiding me every step of the way. That moment wasn’t just a breakthrough in my faith, it was the beginning of understanding how much my faith truly shapes my journey. My faith has been a cornerstone in every aspect of my life, from my academic pursuits to my involvement in leadership roles. Growing up, I was taught that with faith comes resilience. That teaching became even more meaningful when I faced challenges balancing my academic responsibilities and extracurricular commitments at Winston-Salem State University. As a art major, I’ve had to juggle deadlines, coursework, and internships. There were times when the pressure felt unbearable, but it was in those moments that I leaned into my faith, trusting that God would provide the strength to persevere. Through prayer and reflection, I found not only comfort but also the clarity to keep moving forward. My faith has taught me to see setbacks as opportunities for growth, and that perspective has helped me navigate every challenge with resilience. One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced was during my sophomore year when I was balancing my studies with my responsibilities as the Programming Chair for the Residence Hall Association (RHA). There were times when the expectations felt overwhelming, especially when I felt I wasn’t meeting my own standards for success. But through my faith, I learned to trust in God’s timing. I prayed for patience and guidance and sought support from my community and mentors. That experience taught me the power of persistence and the importance of trusting in God’s plan, even when things weren’t going the way I hoped. I not only managed to balance my responsibilities, but I also thrived in the role, organizing events that brought our community together. One of my proudest achievements has been earning an internship with Adobe. The application process was rigorous, and there were moments when I questioned whether I was qualified. But I relied on my faith, trusting that if this opportunity was meant for me, it would work out. When I received the offer, I realized that my faith had not only guided me through the challenges but had also given me the confidence to believe in my abilities. This triumph wasn’t just about landing an internship; it was a testament to the power of faith and persistence, knowing that I’m never alone on this journey. This scholarship opportunity is meaningful to me because it’s not just a financial resource, it’s an affirmation of my journey and the role that faith has played in my success thus far. I am deeply grateful for the ways my faith has shaped my academic and personal growth, and I’m excited to continue walking this path, knowing that my faith will continue to guide me toward greater achievements. With unwavering faith, I am confident that I can make a lasting impact in my career and in the lives of those around me.

The first time I witnessed students' smiles at an event I organized, I realized I wanted to continue making a difference in my community. As the Programming Chair for the Residence Hall Association (RHA) at Winston-Salem State University, I've had the opportunity to organize and execute events that promote a sense of belonging and well-being. One such event was the "Random Acts of Kindness" event, for which I coordinated volunteers, created advertising materials, and ensured that activities ran well. Seeing students lifted by simple acts of kindness, such as leaving anonymous messages or giving out tiny gifts, reinforced my belief that even the tiniest gestures can have a positive effect. This experience taught me the importance of community building and its spreading effects. By providing opportunities for students to interact with one another in meaningful ways, I was able to contribute to a deeper sense of unity and welcoming on campus. The success of the event proved how strategic preparation and smart organization may improve others' college experiences. In addition to my participation in RHA, I have helped my local community through my father's work at Caring Hearts, a nonprofit organization. The organization provides a safe and loving environment for foster children, and my involvement has allowed me to use my skills to make a difference. One of my proudest accomplishments was creating a donation request letter that helped the nonprofit organization in obtaining essential items such as clothing, hygiene products, and educational supplies for the children. The process of describing these children's needs to potential donors showed me the value of precise, effective messaging. It additionally supported my belief that design and storytelling can be effective tools for promoting social change. By combining my creativity with my desire to serve others, I was able to make an impact in the lives of these children. Through my involvement with Caring Hearts, I also learned about the importance of community outreach and advocacy. I realized that making a difference isn't just about big actions it’s also about listening, being present, and taking the time to understand the unique needs of those around me. As I continue to build my skills, I remain dedicated to helping organizations amplify their missions and create lasting change in the communities they serve. Furthermore, my passion for graphic design has allowed me to contribute creatively to various causes. Whether it's designing promotional materials for my school’s volleyball team or creating visual content for my university’s postcard competition, I have used my design skills to raise awareness and engage others. For example, when tasked with designing a flyer for the WSSU Volleyball team, I ensured the flyer reflected the team’s spirit and encouraged school pride. This project allowed me to practice my design skills while promoting team unity and excitement. It also gave me the opportunity to work closely with athletes and coaches, giving me a deeper understanding of how visuals can inspire action and build community. Through leadership, creativity, and service, I have been able to make a meaningful impact on both my campus and my community. Whether it’s fostering a positive environment through RHA events, supporting children in foster care, or using design to amplify important messages, I am committed to making a difference. My experiences have shown me that change is not always about making grand gestures; often, it’s the small, consistent efforts that have the most lasting effect. I am excited to continue using my skills and passion to create positive change in the future.

My name is Blair Jefferson, and I am a junior at Winston-Salem State University majoring in Art with a concentration in computer graphics and minoring in Marketing. My journey to this point has been shaped by my love of art, commitment to education, and desire to use my skills to positively impact my community. From a young age, I have been drawn to visual storytelling, seeing the power of art and design to communicate messages, evoke emotions, and motivate change. As I have progressed through my studies, I have refined my skills and found ways to connect my artistic vision with practical applications in the professional world. Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to take part in various experiences that have shaped my perspective and prepared me for future success. I am currently the Programming Chair for the Residence Hall Association, where I help create engaging events for students. I am also a proud member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, which recognizes my dedication to academic excellence. Additionally, I am part of the WSSU volleyball team, an experience that has taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Recently, I was offered an internship with Adobe as a SAMI Design Program Management intern, an opportunity that will allow me to gain hands-on experience in the industry and further develop my skills. Each of these experiences has played a crucial role in my growth and has reinforced my belief in the importance of hard work, leadership, and community engagement. Attending an HBCU is a deeply meaningful experience for me. Historically, Black Colleges and Universities have been the foundation of African American education, creating leaders, innovators, and change makers. At WSSU, I've discovered an atmosphere that supports my goals while also providing me with a network of peers and mentors that understand my journey. My HBCU's culture of unity and empowerment has given me confidence in my abilities as well as a better understanding of my identity. It is a place that celebrates Black excellence and encourages students to reach their full potential. Being part of an institution that has a rich history of uplifting and educating Black students is an honor, and I am committed to contributing to its legacy. Beyond my academic and extracurricular activities, I am extremely committed to make a difference in my family and community. As a graphic designer with a marketing background, I intend to use my skills to develop visual content that promotes important social messages and businesses, particularly those owned by people of color. I believe that design is more than just aesthetics; it is a tool for communication and change. Whether through branding, advertising, or advocacy campaigns, I want to help businesses and organizations communicate their stories in ways that resonate with their target audiences. One way I've already started making a difference is through my work with Caring Hearts, a group home and child-placing organization where my father is the treatment director. Understanding the needs of underprivileged youth has fueled my desire to contribute my skills to causes that support and uplift marginalized communities. I've also taken the initiative to develop promotional materials for organizations such as a recent flyer for the WSSU Volleyball social media page, demonstrating my ability to combine creativity with marketing strategies. Through my work, I hope to continue using design as a tool for positive change. For my family, earning my degree represents a chance to build a brighter future. As I complete my studies and gain professional experience, I wish to serve as a role model and resource for individuals who want to work in creative professions. I am motivated to use my education and career not only to better myself, but also to empower my community by offering opportunities, mentorship, and representation in industries where diversity is still lacking. Overall, my journey to this point has been one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. Attending an HBCU has given me a strong foundation, and my experiences in leadership, academics, and internships have prepared me to make a meaningful impact. Through my studies and future job, I hope to use my skills to help businesses, advocate for social change, and create opportunities for others. This scholarship would give me the necessary support to continue working toward my goals and making a difference in the lives of others around me.
