Bio

My name is Bianca Pendleton, an aspiring 17-year-old author who resides in Ludowici GA with my family. I attend Long County High School. In school, I am a part of FBLA and BETA Club. I believe in giving back to my community and love volunteering with my mom, brother, and friends. I love spending time with my family. I have been telling stories since I was 7 years old. I would wake up one Saturday morning and draw my ideas then I would ask my mom to type while I dictated the story behind the pictures. I love reading, writing, and drawing because it helps me relax. My favorite animal is a cat, my favorite color is purple, and my favorite food is French fries. When not in school you will find me reading a good book, writing, or drawing. My focus is on creating a great impact in my community by helping my mom with whatever she does. I strongly believe in giving back to the community because it is the foundation of community development and togetherness. I have had the opportunity to be the face of the "I am the child" campaign for the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program and have had the opportunity to advocate for the MTS Sickle Cell Foundation. I love writing the Delivery Girls series and hope you enjoy reading the series.

The books that I have read in my life have significantly influenced my worldview, shaped my ambitions, and inspired me to dream big while always remaining grounded. Each series or stand-alone book carries valuable lessons that echo through my life, and as I reflect on my journey through the pages, I can pinpoint specific insights that have enriched my personal narrative. An important theme present in many of the books I’ve read, like Dork Diaries and The Misadventures of Max Crumbly, is the exploration of identity and the struggles of fitting in. These stories highlight the awkwardness of adolescence and the quest for self-acceptance. I’ve learned that it is normal to feel out of place sometimes and that embracing one’s individuality is a strength rather than a weakness. This recognition has encouraged me to pursue my own path, unapologetically embracing my quirks and passions no matter what anyone else thinks or says. In the Uglies series and the Delirium trilogy, the protagonists Tally Youngblood and Lena Haloway face dystopian societies that make them challenge their beliefs and force them to confront uncomfortable truths. I have learned the importance of courage in the face of adversity and the need for resilience when confronted with obstacles. These narratives inspire me to stand firm in my convictions and fight for what I believe is right, even if it goes against the status quo. As I set goals for myself, I actively remind myself to have courage in challenging situations and to persistently work toward my aspirations without fear of setbacks. Series like Dragonbreath and the Flower Power series emphasize the importance of friendship. These books portray supportive relationships that can uplift individuals and provide comfort during tough times. From these, I have come to value the significance of nurturing friendships and building a strong support system. My goal now includes fostering these meaningful connections, knowing that navigating life’s challenges and triumphs is much easier when I have people I can rely on. Replica and the Ascendance series offer thrilling explorations of identity, ethics, and the complexities of human connections. They instill a sense of curiosity, inviting me to question the world around me and pursue knowledge in various aspects of life. I’ve developed a passion for learning and self-discovery thanks to the main characters Gemma and Lyra from Replica and King Jaron Artolius Eckbert III from the Ascendance series, which has translated into my academic and personal goals. My aspirations have expanded beyond traditional boundaries; Now, I strive to explore different cultures and ideas guiding me toward becoming a well-rounded individual. In Soundless and the Shiver series, themes of love, hope, and perseverance are prevalent. These narratives serve as reminders that even in the bleakest of circumstances, hope can be a transformative force. As I confront my goals, whether they are big or small, I carry the belief that hope fuels our aspirations and encourages us to keep moving forward with me. I have learned that even when faced with uncertainty, holding onto hope can provide the motivation that is needed to push through difficulties. In conclusion, the books I have read have woven a tapestry of lessons, each thread contributing to my evolving identity and aspirations. Their stories remind me of the power of self-acceptance, the strength in resilience, the value of friendship, the joy of curiosity, and the necessity of hope. As I continue to grow and set new goals for my future, I draw from the wisdom in these narratives, ready to embrace my journey with confidence.

Growing up with a parent in the military is an experience that shapes you in ways both challenging and unique. It’s a life marked by constant change, resilience, and a deep understanding of sacrifice. I was born and raised in the military, and I felt like I was the one PCSing, at least it felt that like that. From a young age, I learned that my life was different from that my peers. The sound of planes overhead, the sight of packed bags, and the countdown to deployment became part of my reality. It felt like I was the one getting up at 04:30 in the morning. One of the most difficult aspects was the absence of my dad. Birthdays and holidays were often spent with one less place at the table. I recall moments when friends at school would talk excitedly about birthday parties with their whole family, while I pretended that I didn’t mind celebrating without my dad. The truth was, I missed him deeply, and each birthday candle I blew out came with the same wish—that next year, he would be home. Another defining feature of military life was the moving. Just as I would begin to settle and make new friends, the news would come it was time to move. You have no say so, it feels like you have the biggest postage stamp on your back saying you are being relocated to Camp so and so and you are expected to sign in on such and such date. The process of moving was bittersweet, exciting because of the promise of a new adventure, yet heavy with the sadness of leaving friends behind. Saying goodbye became a skill I mastered reluctantly, learning to treasure moments while they lasted and to let go when it was time. Despite the hardships, being a child of a military parent taught me invaluable lessons. I learned resilience, how to bounce back from disappointment and keep moving forward. I gained empathy and a sense of connection with others who faced similar experiences. I understood sacrifice in a way that few others did, witnessing firsthand the dedication my dad had for serving the country, even when it meant time apart from his family. I plan to use my education to promote literacy among the younger generation and to encourage a love for reading. One of my primary goals is to reintroduce the simple yet impactful joy of holding a book. In order to do this, I envision creating and leading initiatives such as establishing book clubs in local libraries or schools. These clubs would serve as spaces for young readers to explore new books, engage in discussions, and develop a lifelong passion for learning. Additionally, I aim to actively participate in school functions, literacy drives, or community events that promote reading. By collaborating with educators, fellow students, and community leaders. I hope to create an environment where children are inspired to read and improve their literacy skills at every grade level.

A non-traditional educational experience that has profoundly enriched my life was attending a Community Action Resource Fair in my county. The fair provided an array of resources to individuals in the community, covering everything from healthcare to housing assistance, job placement, and mental health services. I was initially drawn to the event because of my mom but upon arrival I understood its purpose. It focusses on supporting local residents who might not have easy access to these resources otherwise, and I wanted to learn more about how communities can come together to address critical needs independently rather than relying on community leaders to act. At the fair, I had the opportunity to engage with a diverse group of people from various backgrounds and hear their stories. Many of the attendees were seeking help with immediate needs, such as finding stable housing or accessing affordable healthcare, and early childhood education. There were also community leaders and local organizations providing information about long-term solutions, like job training programs or educational assistance. I was struck by how interconnected our community is and how many people are working tirelessly to support others who might be struggling. This experience expanded my worldview in several ways. First, I gained a deeper understanding of the social and economic challenges many people face, especially those who are marginalized or economically disadvantaged. It highlighted the importance of accessible resources, but also the significance of community collaboration in addressing complex issues like homelessness, poverty, unemployment, and mental health. I saw firsthand how many people in our community are affected by these challenges, but also how resilience and having a support systems play a crucial role in helping them overcome these barriers. Additionally, interacting with the organizations offering services gave me a deeper appreciation for the role that local initiatives play in solving broader societal issues. It showed me that true change often starts at the grassroots level, where people are not just recipients of services but active participants in building a better future for everyone. For example, my mom works at a Children Advocacy Center and I see the importance of agency in the community and the services that they provide is crucial needed to ensure that the their clients continue to thrive regardless of their trauma. This experience has prepared me for future success by reinforcing the value of empathy, resourcefulness, and community involvement. It taught me the importance of being proactive in seeking solutions to social issues and the power of working together to create a more equitable and supportive environment. The fair also motivated me to continue learning about community development and social justice, areas I hope to engage with in my future career, whether through advocacy, nonprofit work, or policy development. This experience solidified my commitment to making a positive impact in the world by understanding the challenges people face and contributing to solutions that uplift the community.

One of the most enriching experiences I have had in my local community was participating in a food distribution event with Another Chance Outreach Ministries (ACOM). This initiative not only provided vital support to the homeless population in our area but also fostered a sense of solidarity among volunteers and community members. As I reflect on this experience, I am compelled to express my vision for future community involvement—namely, a significant increase in volunteer participation. Volunteering with ACOM was an eye-opening experience that allowed me to witness the realities faced by those who are homeless. Each week, ACOM organizes food distribution events where volunteers gather to pack and hand out meals to individuals and families in need. When I first arrived at the event at The Manna House, I was struck by the diversity of the homeless community—people of different ages, backgrounds, and circumstances all came together in an effort to receive assistance. It became clear to me that homelessness is a very complex issue, not always visible at first glance. This realization ignited a flame of compassion within me, encouraging me to advocate for expanded volunteer efforts to continue supporting this population. One of the most impactful aspects of the food distribution was the personal interaction I experienced while serving meals. As I prepared food along with my fellow volunteers, I had the opportunity to engage in conversations with the recipients. Listening to their experiences humanized the statistics I often read about in the news. It became apparent to me that serving food was more than just providing nourishment; it was about instilling hope and dignity in individuals who may feel overlooked by society. As I participated in this event, I recognized the profound impact of community involvement. Many individuals volunteered their time and energy, forming connections and friendships over a shared cause. I found myself inspired by the dedication and commitment of others, yet I also felt a motivation to encourage more volunteers to join the effort. My vision for the future is for more community members to become actively involved in outreach programs like ACOM. Increasing the number of volunteers will not only expand the reach of services offered to the homeless but will also strengthen communal bonds and foster a culture of empathy and support. To draw more people into volunteering, outreach efforts could be intensified. For instance, schools and local businesses can partner with organizations like ACOM to host informational sessions or hands-on workshops that highlight the importance of helping those in need. Utilizing social media to raise awareness of the events and the noticeable difference that volunteers can make can also attract new participants, particularly younger generations who may be searching for meaningful ways to engage with their communities. At the heart of my experience with Another Chance Outreach Ministries is a simple truth: community engagement can change lives. By volunteering, we not only contribute to solving pressing social issues but also create a supportive environment that encourages others to give back. My hope is to see more individuals embrace the opportunity to volunteer, fostering a compassionate community that stands by those who are most vulnerable. Together, we can work to create lasting positive change, one meal—and one act of kindness—at a time.

From a young age, the written word has been my sanctuary, a world where I could explore the depths of human experience and emotion. As an author, I harness the power of storytelling to reflect the complexities of life, inspire change, and ignite hope. Stories have always been a powerful medium for transformation; they encourage empathy, foster connection, and often serve as the catalyst for a broader understanding of our shared humanity. Through my writing, I aspire to make a positive impact on the world by weaving narratives that resonate with readers, illuminating truths that may otherwise remain in the shadows. Writing has not always come easily to me. Like many aspiring authors, I faced my share of adversity along my journey. Growing up in a small town, I struggled with the barriers of limited exposure to diverse voices and experiences. My early writing was filled with self-doubt — a fear that my voice was not valid or unique enough to stand out in an increasingly crowded literary landscape. However, I realized that my adversity could become my greatest strength. Instead of allowing my insecurities to paralyze me, I chose to embrace them and turn my experiences into stories that speak to those who feel overlooked or marginalized. The fear of not belonging catalyzed my desire to create characters who navigate their struggles, discovering resilience and strength in the face of societal challenges. My stories became a vehicle for exploring themes of identity, inclusivity, and the human condition, ultimately reflecting my longing for deeper connections with the world around me. To overcome my initial hurdles, I sought communities of like-minded individuals who shared my passion for writing. Attending workshops, participating in writing groups, and collaborating with fellow writers not only enhanced my skills but provided me with invaluable feedback and support. Engaging with diverse perspectives helped me expand my narrative horizons, allowing my stories to evolve into more comprehensive reflections of the human experience. These interactions solidified my conviction that words have the power to bridge gaps between individuals from different backgrounds, fostering understanding and compassion in an increasingly divided world. In my chosen career as an author, I intend to create stories that resonate on multiple levels. I aim to bring to life characters whose journeys reflect the realities faced by many, particularly those who may feel voiceless. By crafting narratives rich with depth and complexity, I hope to instill a sense of resilience in my readers, encouraging them to understand that they are not alone in their struggles. Additionally, I plan to advocate for underrepresented voices in literature, pushing for greater diversity in storytelling and championing those whose narratives deserve to be amplified. Furthermore, I believe that storytelling can be a powerful tool for social change. By intertwining critical societal issues within my narratives — such as mental health, racial inequality, and environmental challenges — I aspire to ignite conversations that lead to action. I want my readers to not only engage with my stories but to be inspired to make a difference in their own lives and communities, fostering a culture of empathy and understanding. In conclusion, my journey as an author has been shaped by adversity, but it is through these challenges that I have found my voice. My commitment to using this voice to create a positive impact propels me forward. I believe in the transformative power of stories — to heal, to inspire, and to unite — and I am determined to share narratives that challenge perceptions, spark dialogue, and ultimately contribute to a more compassionate and understanding world.

Food insecurity is a prevalent issue in many communities, including my own. Many families in my neighborhood struggle to put food on the table, especially during the ongoing pandemic. Witnessing this struggle firsthand motivated me to take action and find ways to address this problem. I decided to work with a local organization called ACOM (Area Community Outreach Ministry) that focuses on providing essential services to those in need. I joined their team of volunteers and began helping with their food distribution programs. ACOM collects donations from local businesses and community members, and then distributes them to families in need. This not only helps alleviate food insecurity but also fosters a sense of community support and solidarity. Since joining ACOM, we have been able to expand our reach and provide food assistance to more families in need. Through our efforts, we have been able to distribute food packages to over 100 households on a monthly basis. This has made a significant impact on the lives of those struggling with food insecurity, providing them with much-needed nourishment and support during difficult times. In order to further expand our efforts, I plan to collaborate with more local businesses and organizations to increase donations and resources for our food distribution programs. I also aim to raise awareness about food insecurity in our community and advocate for more sustainable solutions to address this issue in the long term. By working together with like-minded individuals and organizations, I believe we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity in our community. Overall, my motivation to tackle food insecurity stems from a desire to help those in need and create a more inclusive and supportive community. By continuing to volunteer with ACOM and spearhead initiatives to address food insecurity, I hope to make a lasting impact and support those struggling with hunger in our community.

One crisp Saturday morning in 2014, a sunbeam kissed the dewy grass outside my home, illuminating the world. At the young age of 7, my imagination was a canvas waiting to be painted with stories. As I looked out the window, I saw the mailman making his rounds. However, something struck me: I had never seen a mailwoman. At that moment, a spark ignited in my 7-year-old brain—a thought that if a guy could deliver mail, a girl could do it just as well. This idea blossomed into an adventure that would shape my life. Fueled by curiosity and a sense of justice, I ran to my mom, bursting with enthusiasm. “I have an idea for a book!” I exclaimed. I envisioned a world where three daring girls named Saturn, Mercury, and Neptune embarked on whimsical adventures as they delivered mail across town. They would face challenges, solve mysteries, and forge friendships—an exciting narrative that celebrated empowerment and the importance of community. My mom, ever supportive, nodded with a smile, and together we began our creative journey. I narrated vivid scenes while she typed it all out on her computer, capturing my words and ideas on the glowing screen before us. What started as a simple story soon spiraled into a series of ten books, each filled with laughter, challenges, and delightful escapades. We envisioned the characters growing, learning, and adapting as they navigated a world that welcomed girls into roles previously uncontemplated. The first book was initially intended as a Christmas gift for me. Little did I know, it would blossom into an impactful experience—only four of the ten books are published as of the writing of this essay due to the high costs of picture book production, yet this did not diminish the enthusiasm with which we wrote. That day, along with my parents’ support, sparked my love for storytelling. Each word we crafted together filled my heart with joy and ignited a passion within me. As I grew older, the whimsical adventures of “The Delivery Girls” inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming an author. My childhood dream transformed into an innate desire to weave tales that could inspire and resonate with others, allowing me to embrace the magic of storytelling that began on that beautiful Saturday morning in 2014.
      Empower Her Scholarship
Empowerment, to me, is a state of mind where an individual feels confident, capable, and supported to take control of their life, make informed decisions, and shape their own destiny. It's a sense of liberation, where one is no longer held back by self-doubt, fear, or external factors, and is instead fueled by a sense of purpose, passion, and determination. Empowerment is not just a feeling, but a mindset that has a profound impact on one's life, relationships, and overall well-being. Imagine standing at the edge of a vast ocean, feeling the wind in your hair, and the sun on your skin. The waves crash against the shore, each one a reminder of the infinite possibilities that lie ahead. That is what empowerment feels like - a sense of limitless potential, a spark that ignites within you a passion for living, and a courage to pursue your dreams. When we are empowered, we are no longer bound by limitations or held back by fears; we are free to chart our own course, to navigate our own destiny. Empowerment has affected my life in countless ways. It has given me the confidence to take risks, to speak my truth, and to stand up for what I believe in. It has allowed me to build meaningful relationships, to form a community of like-minded individuals who support and encourage me. Empowerment has enabled me to pursue my passions, to explore new interests, and to develop my skills. It has given me the courage to fail, to learn from my mistakes, and to grow as a result. Moreover, empowerment has taught me resilience in the face of adversity. Life invariably presents challenges—setbacks that can either diminish our spirit or ignite our determination. When I faced failure in a project or a setback in pursuing my goals, it was empowerment that helped me reframe the narrative. Instead of seeing failure as a final verdict, I learned to view it as a stepping stone toward growth. Empowered individuals possess the tenacity to persist; they understand that obstacles are not endpoints but rather opportunities for learning and development. This mindset has transformed my approach to challenges, prompting me to confront difficulties with a view toward leveraging them for personal and communal growth. In conclusion, empowerment is not merely a state of being; it is an ongoing journey that shapes our identities and influences our choices. It teaches us the value of resilience, the strength of community, and the importance of believing in oneself. As I navigate life, I carry with me the lessons of empowerment—both to uplift myself and to inspire others to recognize and embrace their own potential. With each step forward, I am reminded that empowerment is a powerful catalyst for change, not just within our own lives but in the world at large.

Childhood is a time when the world is filled with endless possibilities. Each day brings forth a new adventure, and with it, a new dream, perhaps inspired by the vivid mosaic of fiction we consume. For me, this inspiration came in the form of a colorful animated television series -The Backyardigans. This show was not just an entertainment staple, but a catalyst that ignited my imagination and shaped my career aspirations, which ranged from deep sea diver to international super spy. Ultimately, however, it was the world of storytelling that captured my heart and led me on the journey to becoming an author. The Backyardigans was more than just a playful narrative; it was a celebration of creativity. Each episode featured five animated friends who transformed their ordinary backyard into a stage for extraordinary adventures. Their escapades varied widely — one moment they were exploring the depths of the ocean, and the next, they were engaging in thrilling undercover missions. As I immersed myself in their adventures, I found myself captivated by the sheer breadth of what was possible. I too, envisioned diving into the mystical depths of the ocean, uncovering secrets hidden from the world, or soaring into outer space, dancing among the stars. The allure of investigating mysteries like a detective or outsmarting villains as an international super spy felt tangible. Among these aspirations, the role of a spy lingered the longest in my heart. The notion of being shadowy, clever, and resourceful enchanted me. I imagined myself sneaking into secret bases, gathering intelligence, and using my wits to outmaneuver adversaries. This dream distinguished itself from the others; while deep sea diving and exploring space seemed like thrilling pursuits, the spy life offered an exhilarating blend of mystery and intellect. I would often daydream about high-tech gadgets, covert missions, and the thrill of saving the day, all while negotiating the delicate balance of secrecy and bravery. However, as I transitioned from childhood to adolescence and eventually adulthood, reality began to reshape my dreams. The inherent pressures of societal expectations and the realities of life began to weigh heavily on my youthful aspirations. While I maintained a fascination with the world of espionage, I found that the elaborate plots and high-stakes scenarios I envisioned were better suited to the pages of a book than to a life of subterfuge. I began to realize that the very essence of what I loved about being a spy wasn’t just the action — it was the storytelling, the ability to craft intricate narratives that could engage and enthrall. In conclusion, the vibrant adventures of The Backyardigans steered my journey from a myriad of childhood dreams to a singular, clear path as an author. While the allure of being a deep sea diver, detective, astronaut, or international super spy was enchanting, I discovered that the power of storytelling resonated with me most deeply. Through writing, I have crafted limitless worlds, just as those characters once created boundless adventures in their backyard. Today, I strive to inspire young minds to dream boldly and remind them that, while aspirations may shift, the power of imagination is a story worth pursuing.

It's an honor to share with you the story of Mrs. Podunavac, the high school teacher who had a profound impact on my life and shaped the person I am today. Her influence transcended the classroom, and her words still resonate in my mind years after I left her class. As a shy and introverted student, I often struggled to find my place in the sea of faces at our high school. I was the type of person who preferred to blend in and avoid attention, often losing myself in the noise of teenage chaos. That was when Mrs. Podunavac walked into our lives. She was a kind, compassionate, and wise soul with a sparkle in her eyes that instantly put her students at ease. Her subject? English Literature. From the moment she started teaching us, Mrs. Podunavac made us feel seen and heard. She encouraged us to explore our creativity, think critically, and express ourselves authentically. Her lessons were never about just memorizing dates or facts; they were about uncovering the stories behind the stories. She taught us to find meaning in words and to use language as a tool to connect with others. Mrs. Podunavac's passion for literature was infectious, and her love for her students was palpable. She knew each of us by name, took an interest in our lives, and celebrated our victories and supported our struggles. Her office door was always open for those who needed guidance or just someone to listen. Her guidance extended beyond the classroom, and she became a trusted mentor, a source of encouragement, and a voice of reason. One of the most impactful lessons I learned from Mrs. Podunavac was the value of perseverance. We were reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, and I found the novel to be a daunting and complex piece of literature. I felt overwhelmed and frustrated, thinking I was in over my head. Mrs. Podunavac noticed my struggles and sat with me after class, patiently explaining the themes and plot, helping me unravel the complexities. I remember her words: "Sometimes, it's okay to feel lost in a story. It's a sign that you're truly trying to understand it. Just keep reading, and the pieces will start to fall into place." Her words echoed in my mind long after I left her class. I applied them to every aspect of my life, facing challenges head-on with a newfound sense of courage and determination. I realized that it's okay to stumble, to ask for help, and to take my time to find my way. Mrs. Thompson's guidance instilled in me the confidence to pursue my passions and to never give up, even when the journey seems uncertain. Years have passed since I had Mrs. Podunavac as a teacher, but her legacy continues to inspire and motivate me. Her influence extends far beyond the classroom, a testament to the transformative power of good teaching. As I reflect on my life, I realize that Mrs. Podunavac was more than just a teacher – she was a catalyst, a mentor, and a friend who changed the trajectory of my life. Her impact will be felt for years to come, a reminder that the lessons we learn in school go far beyond mere academics. They teach us how to be human, to navigate life's complexities, and to cultivate the courage to pursue our dreams.
      GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo’s album “GUTS” that profoundly resonates with my own teenage experience is: “I’m a mess, but I’m still trying my best.” This line encapsulates the tumultuous and often chaotic nature of adolescence, where self-discovery and emotional turmoil intermingle with the desire to belong and succeed. Adolescence is a unique phase of life characterized by rapid changes—not just in our bodies, but also in our identities, relationships, and emotional landscapes. It’s a time when we are often trying to reconcile our self-perception with how others perceive us. For many teens, feelings of inadequacy can be pervasive, leading to a constant battle against self-doubt. Rodrigo’s acknowledgment of being a “mess” is authentic and relatable. It reflects the reality that many teenagers face: the struggle to juggle academics, friendships, family expectations, and self-image while navigating through a whirlwind of emotions. The phrase “trying my best” is particularly poignant because it symbolizes the effort that youth put into their lives, despite feeling overwhelmed or lost. In a world where social media constantly showcases highlight reels of others’ lives, it’s easy to feel like we’re falling short. The pressure to perform perfectly in school, maintain relationships, and project an ideal image can be suffocating. Yet, Rodrigo’s admission reflects something crucial: it’s okay not to be okay. It’s a reminder that the act of trying—no matter how messy the outcome—holds intrinsic value. During my own adolescence, I found myself in situations that echoed this sentiment. Balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and social life often left me feeling stretched thin and overwhelmed. I vividly remember those moments of doubt, questioning my abilities and worth. There were instances when I didn’t perform as well as I hoped, or when friendships became strained, and I felt like I was letting myself and others down. In those moments, the internal dialogue often revolved around whether I was good enough or capable of overcoming my challenges. Additionally, the concept of “trying my best” speaks to resilience. Adolescence is filled with failures and setbacks, whether it’s that quiz you didn’t study for, a friendship that fizzles out, or the heartbreak that stings. Each of these moments can feel monumental at the time, yet they contribute to personal growth. Rodrigo captures this beautifully—acknowledging the messiness of growing up while embracing the importance of effort. It’s a gentle nudge not to judge ourselves too harshly and to recognize that everyone is navigating their own struggles, often hidden behind a façade of confidence. Ultimately, Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric serves as a beacon of empathy and understanding for those walking through the stormy seas of their teenage years. It resonates not just with my experiences but with countless others who are also striving to make sense of their identities amidst chaos. Adolescence is indeed a journey filled with self-discovery, where embracing our imperfections becomes a key to finding strength. Rodrigo’s combination of vulnerability and encouragement reminds us that it’s okay to be a work in progress. As long as we keep trying—messy and imperfect as it may be—we are moving forward. This lyric is a testament to the resilience inherent in youth and the beautiful, albeit tumultuous, journey of growing up.

My name is Bianca Pendleton, and I am a high school senior with a dream of attending Georgia Southern University to study English. Throughout my life, I have faced challenges that have shaped who I am today. One particular experience stands out as a moment of adversity that tested my strength and resilience. During my sophomore year, my family went through a difficult financial period. My mom lost her job unexpectedly, and it was a tough time for all of us. As the oldest child, I felt a lot of responsibility to help out at home. I took on extra chores and helped my younger siblings with their homework, all while trying to maintain my grades. It was a balancing act that often left me feeling overwhelmed and stressed. The pressure to succeed academically while supporting my family was intense. There were times when I felt like giving up, but I knew that education was my way forward. I had always loved reading and writing, and I was determined not to let this situation derail my dreams of studying English in college. To overcome this adversity, I learned to manage my time better and prioritize my responsibilities. I created a schedule that allowed me to focus on my studies while still being there for my family. I also reached out to my teachers and explained my situation. Their understanding and support were invaluable, and they helped me stay on track with my assignments. This period of adversity taught me the importance of perseverance and resilience. I learned that it is okay to ask for help and that there is strength in vulnerability. I also discovered a sense of determination within myself that I did not know existed. This experience has shaped me into a more empathetic and resourceful person, qualities that I believe will serve me well in college and beyond. If I could offer advice to someone facing similar circumstances, it would be to remember that you are not alone. It is crucial to communicate with those around you, whether it is family, friends, or teachers. Do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Also, try to focus on the things you can control, like your attitude and effort. Setting small, achievable goals can make a big difference and help you stay motivated. Adversity is a part of life, but it does not define us. It is how we respond to these challenges that truly shapes who we are. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and the person I have become because of this experience. As I look forward to attending Georgia Southern University, I am excited to continue growing and pursuing my passion for English, knowing that I have the resilience to overcome whatever challenges may come my way.

I have always been drawn to the power of words and how they can express emotions, tell stories, and inspire change. Growing up as a Black woman, I have often turned to books to see the world through different perspectives and to find voices that resonate with my own experiences. This is why I am excited to pursue a major in English at Georgia Southern University. Throughout my high school years, I have worked hard to maintain a GPA of 3.9. I have taken advanced courses whenever possible, particularly in English, to challenge myself and deepen my understanding of language and literature. My dedication to my studies comes from a genuine love for learning and a desire to use my education to make a positive impact in my community. I believe that stories have the power to bring people together and to foster understanding and empathy. As a future English major, I hope to study a diverse range of authors and works that reflect the richness of human experience. From a young age, I have always been drawn to the world of literature and storytelling. The written word has a unique power to transcend time and space, connect different ideas, and open minds to new stages. This is why I have chosen to pursue a degree in English Literature with a minor in Creative Writing because I believe in the ability of stories to inspire, challenge, and restore. I have always been fascinated by how narratives shape our understanding of the world, how they bring different perspectives to light, and how they encourage us to empathize with experiences far beyond our understanding. In choosing this field, I am not just pursuing a personal passion; I am also aiming to make a meaningful impact on others. I want to use the art of storytelling to foster empathy, entertain, and inspire change. Writers have been at the forefront of social movements, amplifying the voices of the marginalized and opening hearts and minds to new possibilities. I am inspired by the idea that I, too, can contribute to this tradition of using storytelling as a tool for positive change. My desire to create an impact extends beyond merely writing. I want to encourage others to recognize the power of their voices, and to help individuals find the courage to share their stories. In my future career, I hope to engage in helping others discover their creative potential and to inspire others to understand how literature can enrich their lives. Whether through writing workshops, community outreach, or storytelling in the classroom. I want to create spaces where people feel empowered to express themselves and reflect on the world around them without being afraid. I believe that by sharing stories whether fictional or real we can break down barriers, foster understanding, and promote a healthy environment. On a personal level, my goal is to use my education to deepen my understanding. Getting out of my comfort zone and telling my story. My mom always mentioned that you can’t share someone's story until you share yours, so I want to inspire others to do the same. I want to write not only to entertain, but to spark important conversations about society, and the struggles we face as individuals and as a collective. I am particularly drawn to writing about underrepresented voices, particularly stories from those who may not often see themselves reflected in mainstream media. I believe that literature can provide a platform for these voices, allowing them to be heard and understood on a deeper level. This scholarship will help me to achieve my professional passion. I plan to focus on both my academic and personal growth. I will seek opportunities to gain practical experience, such as internships, writing workshops, or book clubs, to build the foundation for a career that combines both creativity and education. Ultimately, I hope to leave a lasting impact through the stories I write. I believe I can make a meaningful contribution to both the world of literature and the broader world around me.

It is important that we work to better understand the nature of our universe because we are in the universe. The universe helps us to understand our place in it. It provides insight into the beginnings of all life on the planet we call home. The universe reveals the laws of physics and can lead to advancements in technology by exploring phenomena that are new to us and pushing against the boundaries of our knowledge. This contributes to a more in-depth understanding of ourselves and our existence on Earth: where did we come from? What is the nature of our reality? Are we alone in the universe? What is that ultimate divine power that exists in the universe? These questions push us to explore the depth of space, time and the law that governs them, revealing both the complexity and beauty of the universe. Understanding the nature of the universe can be explained in two ways. One way is being practical. Scientific discoveries in physics, astronomy, and cosmology often lead to technological innovations that improve our daily lives. The development of technologies like medical imaging, navigational systems and the internet can trace their origins to major research in fields like relativity and quantum mechanics. By continuing to explore the universe, we unlock new tools, ideas and solutions to address pressing matters like climate change, energy sustainability, and health care. Another level is being rational. Our own understanding of the universe shapes our world views. As we learn more and more about its origin and the potential of life beyond Earth, we cultivate a sense of connection with the world around us. This found information also encourages us to reflect on our role in the wider aspect of our existence, fostering a greater sense of humanity and responsibility towards each other and the planet. To make progress in this venture, I believe we must employ a multidisciplinary approach. We need to combine fields such as quantum physics, cosmology, astrobiology, and philosophy. Concepts like quantum mechanics, which governs the microscopic world, and general relativity, which explains the behavior of massive objects and the twist of space-time, must be combined into a comprehensive theory of quantum gravity. Additionally, exploring the role of mindfulness and artificial intelligence could offer new perspectives on the nature of reality. Finally, the scientific method and experimental observation will remain our most powerful tools. Observing distant galaxies, studying particle physics, and simulating cosmic phenomena will help us refine our understanding. By continuously pushing the boundaries of knowledge, we come closer to uncovering the mysteries of the universe and, in turn, to improving life on Earth.

As one individual, I may not be able to change the world alone, but I believe it takes a collective effort to make a meaningful impact. Each of us, working together, has the potential to bring about change. I want to be a part of that collective effort. As a high school student, it often feels like many people want us to be invisible, failing to recognize that we are the leaders, thinkers, and changemakers of tomorrow. We have a voice, and we are capable of more than we are often given credit for. During my time in school, I am committed to volunteering in my community and participating in various outreach programs. I want to be actively involved in distributing resources to families and individuals in need, helping to bridge gaps and support those who are struggling. One issue I am particularly passionate about is homelessness. I plan to continue using my voice to raise awareness about this critical issue and encourage others to recognize the importance of supporting those within our own communities. By sharing my own stories and experiences, I hope to inspire others to take action and think more deeply about how they can contribute to positive change. After high school, I plan to attend college, where I intend to study English literature. I’ve always been drawn to the power of storytelling, and I believe pursuing a career in writing will allow me to continue sharing the stories of others, especially those whose voices are often unheard. Writing has the power to shed light on important issues, create empathy, and inspire change. I want to use my writing to tell the stories that need to be told and to encourage others to dream big, knowing that the adventure of their own lives is only a journey away. Beyond my studies, I plan to stay involved with organizations like Another Chance Outreach Ministries (ACOM), where I’ve already begun volunteering. After college, I hope to continue contributing to the growth of the community by working alongside leaders and community members to identify what is needed and where I can make the greatest impact. My long-term goal is to help generate the resources necessary to ensure ACOM’s mission continues to thrive and support those in need. I believe that by working together through volunteering, storytelling, and community engagement we can create a better, more compassionate world. My journey is just beginning, but I am determined to make a lasting difference wherever I can.

Growing up as a child with a parent in the military is an experience that shapes you in ways both challenging and unique. It’s a life marked by constant change, resilience, and a deep understanding of sacrifice. I was born and raised in the military, and I felt like I was the one PCSing, at least it felt that like that. From a young age, I learned that my life was different from that of many of my peers. The sound of planes overhead, the sight of packed duffel bags, and the countdown to deployment became familiar parts of my reality. It felt like I was the one that was getting up at 04:30 in the morning. One of the most difficult aspects was the frequent absence of my dad. Birthdays and holidays were often spent with one less place at the table. I vividly recall moments when friends at school would talk excitedly about their birthday parties with their whole family present, while I pretended that I didn’t mind celebrating without my dad. The truth was, I missed him deeply, and each birthday candle I blew out came with the same wish—that next year, he would be home. Another defining feature of military life was the frequent moves. Just as I would begin to feel settled and make new friends, the news would come it was time to pack up and leave. Making new friends was not just a routine but a survival skill. Each new school brought its own set of challenges. Would I fit in? Would they understand what it was like to be the new kid again? I developed the ability to adapt quickly, opening up to new people even when I knew the friendships might be temporary. Over time, I realized that each goodbye strengthened me, preparing me for the inevitable changes that lay ahead. In the end, growing up in a military family made me who I am today: adaptable, strong, and appreciative of every moment spent with loved ones. It taught me that home isn’t just a place, it’s where the heart is, it’s the people you meet, it’s the journey along the way even if that heart is spread across continents and bound together by love and shared memories.

Volunteering in my community is a deeply fulfilling act of kindness. Every time I lend a hand to a cause, whether it’s assisting at a food giveaway, outreach or a in neighborhood clean-up efforts, I do so with the genuine desire to help others without expecting anything in return. The motivation behind my volunteering is not to gain recognition or rewards, but simply to make a positive difference in the lives of others. I believe that giving my time and energy to those in need contributes to building a stronger, more connected community, where kindness and compassion are valued. Volunteering is an expression of selflessness; it is about giving of your time to others without seeking personal gain. Many people choose to volunteer because they care about the welfare of others and want to contribute to the well-being of their community. For me, volunteering is a chance to step outside of my own world and offer support to those who might be struggling, whether it’s a family facing food insecurity or a child needing educational assistance. Volunteering in my community allows me to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked. One of the most fulfilling aspects of volunteering is the direct impact I have on the lives of others. For instance, when I volunteer at the local food pantry, I help distribute meals to families in need. Seeing the relief and gratitude on people’s faces when they receive food reminds me why I dedicate my time to such causes. It’s not just about providing a meal; it’s about offering a sense of dignity, support, and hope to those who may be experiencing hardship. Volunteering fosters a sense of togetherness and mutual support within a community. By contributing to local projects, I feel more connected to the people around me, whether it’s neighbors, local organizations, or other volunteers. This sense of community is essential, especially in times of crisis or difficulty. When people work together toward common goals, such as helping the homeless, cleaning up the environment, or supporting the elderly, they build trust and solidarity among each other. Another key benefit of volunteering is that it has the power to inspire others to act. I’ve often been amazed by how a single act of kindness can spark a chain reaction. When people see others volunteering their time and energy, they are more likely to become involved themselves. This creates a ripple effect, where more and more people join in to help their communities. By volunteering, I hope to set an example for others, especially younger generations, to prioritize kindness and community engagement. Whether it’s encouraging a friend to come along with me to volunteer or sharing my experiences, I believe that acts of kindness, no matter how small, can inspire others to give back in their own way. Volunteering also offers me personal growth. While the main purpose of my volunteering is to help others, I have found that the experience benefits me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. It teaches me patience, empathy, and problem-solving skills, and it has allowed me to learn more about the challenges facing people in my community. It’s easy to take for granted the privileges in our own lives, but volunteering helps me to gain a better understanding of the struggles others face. Ultimately, the act of volunteering in my community brings me a deep sense of joy and fulfillment. While I may not receive monetary rewards or recognition for my time, the emotional rewards are significant. The joy of knowing that I’ve helped make someone’s day a little easier, or that I’ve contributed to a collective effort for positive change, is more than enough. Volunteering is an opportunity to express kindness and generosity, which in turn fosters a sense of purpose and connection to others. Volunteering in my community is a true act of kindness. I give my time without expecting anything in return, and in doing so, I am able to contribute to the well-being of others and strengthen the bonds within my community. The positive impact of volunteering is not just felt by those who directly benefit, but by everyone involved in the act of giving. Through volunteering, I have learned that the simplest acts of kindness, no matter how small can have a lasting and meaningful impact on the lives of others. In a world that can often feel divided by socio-economic status, volunteering reminds me that kindness is a powerful tool for building connections and creating positive change.

Writing has always been a passion of mine, in the joy of storytelling that I discovered as a child. I recall when I was 7 years old, I went to my mom room and told her that I have a story in my head, and I wanted her to type it out for me and she has to write down exactly what I said. From that moment, I knew I had the knack for writing. I found excitement in creating plots, weaving together characters in my head, settings, and plots that transported me and, I hoped, others into a different world. Whether it was through scribbled stories in my notebooks or spontaneous tales I told to my family, my writing became a way for me to express myself and connect with others like me. It also became a place of escape and brought things to life. In writing you can create your own theme, or how you envision how you want things to be. The you have the ability to control the outcome. To make changes, no matter where you are in the story. For example, my first story that I wrote for school, my teacher praised me on how creative my story was which gave me a great feeling. As I prepare to enter college, my enthusiasm for writing remains strong. I plan to engage myself in this passion by joining the creative writing club, where I can collaborate with like-minded peers, share my work, and receive constructive feedback. This community will provide me with a supportive working environment for exploring new genres and styles, that will enhance my creativity. Additionally, I want to take advantage of workshops, special projects and courses that the college offers, allowing me to learn from experienced writers and gain new perspectives on the profession. Beyond formal settings, I intend to set aside time for personal writing. It will help build my self-confidence and overcome my public speaking. Whether it’s through journaling, drafting short stories, or even working on a longer piece, I want to maintain consistent with my writing routine. This dedication will help me improve my skills and keep the flow of ideas constantly in my mind. Moreover, I plan to attend literary events, join book clubs, and fair to engage with the broader writing community, gathering inspiration from others and also sharing when I can. Ultimately, writing is not just a hobby for me; it’s an important part of who I am. I believe that the college environment will enrich my storytelling abilities and help me grow as a writer. By actively participating in creative writing opportunities and nurturing my own projects, I am excited to see how my voice evolves during this time. Writing will be both be aa adventure and a means of exploration, guiding me through my college pathway, leading me to the unknown.
