Coming from a single-mother household has shown me the importance of self-reliance and hard work. I deeply admire my mom for her dedication and perseverance, but I also realize that she can only do so much. As the youngest child, my mom does not have the financial resources to support my college education. Currently, I’m working two jobs while attending school and managing extracurricular activities to help support myself.
The career I would like to pursue is becoming a speech therapist. I have chosen it because I would like to help people communicate. Communication is one of the most important tools we as people use. Everybody should be able to express their feelings, wants, and needs. I have always loved children and would like to prioritize working with kids. It's hard feeling like you're different from everyone else because your brain does not function like theirs. I want to eliminate that feeling as much as possible by helping them learn how to navigate the world of communication and enhance their skills.
School was not always easy for me. I often felt like I was falling behind, watching my classmates breeze through lessons while I struggled to keep up. Tasks that might come easily to others were challenging for me, and as a child, I felt stupid compared to others. It was discouraging to always be the last one finishing my tests. Despite seeking help from my parents and tutors, I still felt like I couldn't catch up. As I got older, I realized that success isn’t about being the smartest person in the room—it’s about work ethic. While others may grasp new material quickly, I’ve learned to embrace the process of working harder to understand different subjects. This mindset has made me more determined and diligent. I understand that I may need to put in extra effort to achieve the same results, but that’s a challenge I am willing to take on.
Looking ahead to college, I am excited to apply the work ethic I developed in high school to continue succeeding in a new and more demanding environment. I am eager to learn, overcome challenges, and grow. This scholarship would allow me to focus more on my academics by reducing financial stress, helping me to fully dedicate myself to my education. I am committed to pushing myself to be the best student I can be and to take full advantage of the opportunities ahead.

Figuring out what I want to do with my life has been an intimidating decision. I was encouraged to think about things I enjoy, so I focused on helping people. I knew I wanted to work with kids but didn’t want to become a teacher. That’s when I realized speech therapy could be a perfect fit. In this field, I would help individuals express themselves, particularly those who might not be able to do so on their own.
This scholarship would not only ease my financial burden but also allow me to focus more on my academic success and extracurricular involvement. It would bring me one step closer to pursuing my passion and achieving my long-term goals. I am determined to continue working hard, and receiving this scholarship would play a crucial role in making my dream of attending Penn State a reality.
