Technology can enhance so many different aspects of our lives. Food security is definitely an area that can benefit from technology usage. According to Nicholas Fearn, a contributor to Forbes, “Even in the 21st century, food insecurity is a stark reality for a large proportion of the world. According to research from the UN, 821 million people - or one in nine - are starving.” (Forbes, 2018) Fearn goes on to explain how a tech giant has paired with a children’s charity to develop a machine that allows flour mills to inject certain nutrients into the flour as it is milled. This technology makes it easy for flour producers to mass manufacture flour that contains critical nutrients for the world’s malnourished populations. Through cellular channels, a flour mill can remotely control 100 flour mills from a central location. This alone allows nutrient-rich flour to be prepared for approximately 500,000 people. Both partners in this venture hope to use other technology, such as robotics, drones, sensors, remote-control tractors to help combat the hunger problems worldwide. (Forbes, 2018) Another way technology can be used to help combat world hunger is by predicting drought and other agricultural weather systems that may be detrimental to crop yields. By using earth-orbiting satellites paired with ground-based sensors, we can now forecast, much more accurately, the causes of much of the food insecurity. (Vota, 2017) The vital data transmitted back and forth between these technological tools have allowed for the development of databases with vast amounts of weather-related data. Scientists can use this data to help predict climatological changes that will affect the food supply in many developing nations around the world. Not all technology uses have to consist of complex ways to analyze and use the collected data. One such program in Africa is actually providing paper copies of maps to pastoral farmers that show the best vegetational areas for cattle grazing. According to Vota, “These high-tech, yet easily accessible maps show vegetation density and greenness down to a 10 km2 area, and almost 80% of pastoralists in the intervention community used the maps for migration decision making and more than half said it was their most important source of information. Even better, there was a 47% drop in herd mortality.” (2017) Something as simple as a printed map can be used to help combat hunger. There are no simple answers to the world’s hunger problem. If there were only one or two causes of food insecurity, the solutions would be much simpler. Technological advances can help to alleviate some of the issues involving food insecurity. These advances need to be properly researched and funded in order to best match the solution to the exact problem. Environmental engineering can support the technological advances necessary to help solve this critical issue.

Characteristics like good work ethic and working hard to achieve what I want were instilled in me at a young age from my father. He has shown me how to work hard to provide for a family. I am thankful for the example and like him, I am already a member of the American workforce. I began my first job when I was fifteen years old. I decided I wanted to be a lifeguard so I studied for the certification course and CPR. I was dedicated and committed to the task and I accomplished my goal. Like my father, I have set my mind towards a goal and accomplished it. This project also led me to begin thinking about a career and what I could contribute to society after I graduate from college. One area that really interests me is world hunger. It is hard to fathom the depth of the situation from where we live in the United States. We do not think about people on the other side of the globe suffering from food insecurity. I began to wonder how I could merge my career plans in engineering to address the problem of food insecurity. Engineering technology can enhance so many different aspects of our lives and food insecurity is definitely an area that can benefit from technology usage. Technology is ever-changing and ever-developing. If we can find new ways to use technology in the fight against hunger around the world, we can possibly eradicate malnourishment. This is just one way technology can be used for the betterment of the global world population. I would enjoy being a part of a development team that could contribute to a widespread problem like world hunger. I plan to use my engineering degree from Clemson University or Charleston Southern University to contribute to solving the world’s food insecurity.

Through my struggle with anxiety, I have also learned to accept myself. This was a hard lesson for me to learn because I still do not understand why I suffer from it. I have learned valuable skills and ways to help alleviate some of the burdens; however, I know that this will probably be something I will have to deal with for a lifetime. Since I have experienced this obstacle in my personal life, it has taught me to be more aware and more accepting of other peoples’ issues. Our personal lives are private and therefore, we may not realize exactly what another person is experiencing in theirs that may affect how they behave in a certain situation. It is important for us to refrain from judging a person based solely on an initial meeting. Rather, we must try to understand where that person is in his life journey before we form any opinions. Another important aspect I have also learned is to practice patience during my everyday dealings with other people. I have realized if I stop to think before I react, I am likely to calm down and regard the other person’s feelings before I react. Regardless of our inner emotions and issues, we are still accountable for the way we act. In order to be treated with respect and kindness, we must treat others with respect and kindness. I certainly do not want anyone to think that I am judging them or dismissing them because of how I may view their actions. Through my battle with anxiety, I have gained valuable insight into my life and the lives of others. This process has helped me function in a more positive manner while still being aware of my problems with anxiety.

I have recently fit into leadership roles in my church, varsity sports, and my Boys’ State experience. I have found the best way to motivate people in a group setting is to participate in whatever you are trying to lead others to do. This practice allows for the leader to lead by example; this being the biggest and best way to accomplish something. For example, in my church, there is a focus on getting the youth to actively participate in worship. I have been successful in accomplishing this goal by delivering the sermon and having the other youth be responsible for the other aspects of the worship service. In sports, I have maintained a positive attitude even while dealing with an injury. By staying positive and constantly praising my teammates, I have created a culture of optimism on my team. It has been exciting to witness the team remain focused on winning and displaying good sportsmanship all season. We are currently the region champions and will go to the state semi-finals soon. It has helped that I am a senior this year. I think it is natural for others to look to someone older for guidance and leadership. I have enjoyed my role on the team and it makes me proud that I have been able to guide my teammates.

Later, as I worked as a landscaper, I learned first-hand what physical labor was like, how time management mattered, and how to manage long hours of working. In addition, I performed jobs that strengthened me physically and mentally. I have completed my recertification and worked two lifeguarding jobs during the summer. My learned time management skills were very useful, as I had to manage two jobs, yard work, schoolwork, and other life events. These positions have also helped me learn how to multitask, which I know will be useful during my college career. Other attributes I have learned over time, like developing good study habits. I participated in dual enrollment where I took courses at Midlands Technical College (MTC) while still being a full-time high school student. This experience forced me to adapt to the requirements of being a college student, but still, continue to participate in my high school events and in athletics. This has helped me realize how important it is to manage one's time. I am anxious to begin my college career so that I can utilize all the skills that I have learned over time. I hope to become an engineer who specializes in environmental projects. In order to achieve my goal, I know that I am going to need to be able to use all my skill sets. I hope to be able to give back to my community through my career choice. I began to wonder how I could merge my career plans in engineering to address the problem of food insecurity. I am extremely interested in designing tools and mechanics that will help in the fight against hunger.

I have suffered from extreme anxiety since a very young age. I have always loved sports and played since I was young. I did not have any problems playing with recreation teams because I had grown up around the other children and felt comfortable around them. However, that all changed when I entered middle school and wanted to try out for the football team. I desperately wanted to play, but my anxiety was so high, I could not even step onto the practice field. I knew the other players and the coaches but that did nothing to extinguish my mixed emotions. No matter how hard I tried, I could not make myself relax enough to actually join the team. My family and I decided I should seek counseling in order to help me overcome my anxiety. We found a counselor I could relate to and I began visiting weekly. It really helped me to discuss my feelings out loud and receive sound advice. I feel that I grew emotionally during this time and learned how to manage living with my anxiety. I learned valuable coping strategies that I can use for the rest of my life. I have learned to recognize those situations that might contribute to my anxiety. In this way, I can better prepare myself for these instances. The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is a book that affected me deeply. To me, this is a coming of age story that parallels my own life and the lives of adolescents as they mature. Just like the book, I entered my adolescent years believing that the world was good and people always did the right thing. This book has helped me realize that I need to contribute to the world in a positive way. I try to always remember that my actions not only affect me but also those around me. Since we are endowed with free will, sometimes it is challenging to act in a non-selfish way. A truly utopian society will never exist but striving towards that goal can make the world a little better. I plan to practice this philosophy in my career choice by helping others.

By becoming a member of the Fairfield Soil & Water Conservation Society, I have been able to use my love of the outdoors and my care for the environment to perform projects that I feel are making a difference in my county. Working as a group, we were trying to promote conservation while at the same time, provide a beneficial service for the citizens in our county during Covid. We decided to construct birdhouses and place them at the local retirement home. By performing this project, we were able to provide shelter and conservation for a natural resource and simultaneously provide an outlet for the residents of the retirement home to be able to enjoy an activity during Covid. Since people were not able to enter the retirement home to visit the residents for many months due to Covid, the society felt we could actively contribute and make the pandemic a little less harsh for the residents by providing them with a fun activity like bird-watching. I have also volunteered for the meals on wheels program that serves hot lunches to our senior citizens and homebound elderly. Through this activity, I was able to provide something meaningful to the older citizens of my county. This project also led me to begin thinking about a career and what I could contribute to society after I graduate from college. One area that really interests me is world hunger. This past year while participating in my church’s Covid-19 1st Responder project, I had the opportunity to deliver snacks to my county first responders. This was a program developed by my church, in order to show appreciation for the first responders during this Covid epidemic. My church was extremely visible in the community during the Covid shutdown. We were brainstorming how we could honor our local first responders and let them know how much we appreciated their service during the pandemic. We knew that we would not be able to meet with them face-to-face since no one was gathering in person. First, we developed a list of all the first responders’ locations throughout the county. Next we decided if we provided snacks to these locations, hopefully all the responders would be able to receive them regardless of what shift they were working. We then decided to deliver once a week to a different location. My brother and I volunteered to deliver the snacks. I was glad to volunteer for this project because it made me feel as if I were contributing to something worthy during this unprecedented time. This project has made me realize a kind act does not have to be elaborate for it to make a difference in someone’s life.

It is hard to fathom the depth of the situation from where we live in the United States. We do not think about people on the other side of the globe suffering from food insecurity. I began to wonder how I could merge my career plans in engineering to addressing the problem of food insecurity. Engineering technology can enhance so many different aspects of our lives and food insecurity is definitely an area that can benefit from technology usage. I have learned how a tech giant has paired with a children’s charity to develop a machine that allows flour mills to inject certain nutrients into flour as it is milled. This technology makes it easier for flour producers to mass manufacture flour that contains critical nutrients for the world’s malnourished populations. Through cellular channels, a flour mill can remotely control hundreds of flour mills from a central location. This feat alone allows nutrient-rich flour to be prepared for approximately 500,000 people. Something as simple as a cellular network, that most people around the globe take for granted, can be used to combat world hunger. Another way technology can be used to combat world hunger is by predicting drought and other agricultural weather systems that may be detrimental to crop yields. Scientists are now using satellites that orbit the earth along with sensors located on the ground, to now forecast, much more accurately, the causes of much of the food insecurity. The vital data transmitted back and forth between these technological tools have allowed for the development of databases with vast amounts of weather-related data. Scientists can use this data to help predict climatological changes that will affect the food supply in many developing nations around the world. In order to ensure that there is somewhere still viable for producing crops, we need to focus on growing natural foods without the use of chemicals. For years, we have been overusing our natural resources; the time will come when they are no longer viable. If we begin to focus on growing natural foods, we may be able to save our world's habitats and prolong their use. Technology is ever-changing and ever-developing. If we can find new ways to use technology in the fight against hunger around the world, we can possibly eradicate malnourishment. This is just one way technology can be used for the betterment of the global world population. I plan to use my engineering degree to continue to the fight against worldwide hunger.

Budget, budget, budget! Set a monthly budget and stick to it! That is the most helpful financial advice I have received. I have watched my parents proceed from not having a monthly budget to developing one and following it. Their example has helped me realize that in order to have a good financial future, I need to be proactive when it comes to my finances. I am lucky because I am young enough to really benefit from this practice. If I start budgeting and actively controlling my money while in college, I should enter the professional world in positive shape as far as my finances go. I believe that financial problems are a major component of what makes people unhappy in life. I do not mean that one has to be financially rich in order to be happy. However, I do believe that if a person knows how to live within a budget, they will live a happier life. I am thankful to my parents for equipping me with this financial knowledge at a young age. I believe that their advice will benefit me not only throughout college, but also when I do begin my career. It will be helpful to me when starting out on my own to empower myself with this good financial advice.

I am active in my community as a member of Sion Presbyterian Church and the Fairfield County Soil & Water conservation society. This past year I helped develop a volunteer COVID-19 first responder's program for my church. Through this mission, I have gone into my local community to provide much-needed services. By performing these acts of service, I hope to call attention to the need for active positive social change in my community. We decided to construct bird houses and place them at the local retirement home. It makes me happy to be to able to provide something for someone else to enjoy.

I like to think that people would list leadership as one of my characteristics if they were to describe me. I do not feel that I am pushy or bossy. I believe that I lead by example and people naturally want to follow my example. I have thought about this a lot this year. In my school, there are grades K-12. The lower school students know the upper school students and there is a lot of interaction between the two groups. Being a senior this year has led me to realize that I can be a leader and influencer of others by the way I behave around them. For these reasons, I am excited to begin my college career. I think that the added responsibility that college will place upon me will allow me to develop even more leadership skills. I know that there will be a significant learning curve involved in beginning my college career, but I feel that this will equip me with the knowledge I need to be able to become a leader wherever I attend college. By understanding what college students are facing and actually experiencing these same issues, I can give back to my school by actively leading by example. This scholarship will enable me to pursue my goals for the future by helping me finance my education. I plan to work while I attend college, but I want to settle in during my first semester as I learn how to study for college and adapt to college life in general. A scholarship will be a much needed comfort during this time of transition for me.

    Next Young Leaders Program Scholarship
I see leadership as a characteristic that someone possesses. I believe one can achieve that characteristic if they are not endowed with it, but a true leader is born with that particular instinct. That being said, I probably would not have considered myself a leader until I entered high school. I say this because I did not truly begin to make my own life choices until I reached that age. Prior to high school, most of my choices were made for me. There was not much room for me to practice leadership except in sports. I can now look back and tell that other teammates looked to me for advice, attitude, and general behavior. It has helped that I am a senior this year. I think it is natural for others to look to someone older for guidance and leadership. I also had the opportunity to attend American Legion Boys’ State this past summer. This experience was priceless to me because it gave me the opportunity to surround myself with peers who excel at leadership. This allowed me to discover some new traits of leadership and actually witness other leaders putting their talents to work. I learned valuable skills during my week at Boys’ State that I will carry with me into my future endeavors. For these reasons, I am excited to begin my college career. I think that the added responsibility that college will place upon me will allow me to develop even more leadership skills. I know that there will be a significant learning curve involved in beginning my college career, but I feel that this will equip me with the knowledge I need to be able to become a leader at Francis Marion University.

I always thought that the world hunger problem stemmed from poor populations not possessing the means to grow their own food. After some research, I have realized that not having enough food to feed everyone around the world is not the problem. Tons of food are wasted everyday, especially in highly developed countries like the United States. The major problem faced when trying to feed the world’s hungry populations is finding a way to ensure the hungry have access and the means to buy, healthy foods; this is otherwise known as food insecurity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2019), “hunger is increasing in many countries where economic growth is lagging…income inequality is rising in many countries where hunger is on the rise…” (WHO). When I decided to major in engineering, I learned through my research that technology is ever-changing and ever-developing. These positions have also helped me learn how to multitask, which I know will be useful during my college career. Other attributes I have learned over time, like developing good study habits. I participated in dual enroll where I took courses at Midlands Technical College (MTC) while still being a full-time high school student. This experience forced me to adapt to the requirements of being a college student taking college courses at MTC, but still continuing to participate in my high school events and in athletics. Let's use technology for good and not to spread harmful messages. Technology can enhance so many different aspects of our lives. One important way we can use technology is to fight food insecurity. According to research from the United Nations, one in nine people in the world are starving. By using technology such as robotics, drones, sensors, remote controls, we can develop technological processes that will aid the world in the fight against hunger. One such process involves using remote controls and cellular technology to make it easy for flour producers to mass manufacture nutrient-rich flour in the areas of greatest need around the globe. Another process uses technology to help predict long-term rainfall and drought in areas where crops are grown for the masses. These processes have allowed scientists to build huge databases with climate-related information that benefit farmers when they plant. I plan to pursue a degree in engineering after high school. I am interested in how we can use technology to combat world hunger. Since technology is such a seamless part of most peoples' lives, I would like to use it to make the world a better place. Worldwide hunger is a problem that can be solved by using technology specifically developed for this sector. According to the United Nations, one in nine people are starving. Technology, I believe, can help to alleviate the global hunger problem. By using this scholarship, I will be able to attend college and pursue my educational goal of obtaining an engineering degree. With this degree, I plan to help combat world hunger by developing new products and technology that will make it easier to supply food and grow food in areas that are densely populated and suffering from drought or other environmental factors which may be contributing to the hunger problem.

A scholarship will help me alleviate some of the burden of paying for college. I have had jobs while in high school, but to my dismay, I have not been able to save a significant amount to contribute towards my further education. I plan to work while in college to help supplement my tuition costs, but any scholarship I can receive would greatly impact my education and my future plans for targeting world hunger.
