I am a High School student looking to make the most out of life! What would be the most out of life?
That's the question, isn't it?
For me, the answer to that question lies in my writing. I am a HUGE literary fan, and love works such as "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R Tolkien, and "Fablehaven" by Brandon Mull.
I am a fantasy nerd through and though, and hope to write emotionally moving pieces with characters to connect with and storylines of epic proportion. In addition, I plan to peruse a career in English Education; to foster a love of reading to students I have the privilege to teach.
That's not enough? Alright, I'll continue.
One of my top goals is to serve the Lord in all I do. Writing, the workplace, you name it. I am a faithful Christian who enjoys time at church and time with friends.

When I was ten I started writing my first book. As you might expect, it didn't last more than a couple pages, and I gave up for years after. However, when I was fourteen, I was given a creative writing assignment for a school project. Immediately, my desire and love of writing came rushing back in full force. I finished the assignment and began work on a new idea, with high aspirations to become the next J.R.R Tolkien and billionaire. While these goal were not met by any means (at least, not yet), I began avidly pursuing the writing craft and growing my skills the more I wrote.
As I wrote, I began to wonder if this “writing thing” could become a career. As I grew older, the people in my life were constantly telling me to peruse a career I enjoyed, and this seemed to be it. The more I dug into the field, however, the more difficult it seemed to be to even start. But this doesn't mean my love of writing is any less. Which is why I plan to go to college for a writing degree, and break into the editorial and writing field.
The more I think about it, the more I think that my favorite part about writing is the sheer creativity of it all. My whole life there have always been strict rules and regulations, and I’ve had a hard time complying with just about all of them. With writing, there are no rules, and regulations are what you make them. It’s an intoxicating feeling, when you realize for the first time that you can do literally whatever you want with this skill.
A close second to this idea, however, is the feeling you get when you write. The feeling of giving life to your ideas; having something that is uniquely yours. Sure, there may be inspiration taken from other sources, and many people do contribute to this brainstorming process, but at the end of the day, it’s you and you alone that brought this story to life. One of the best tings about writing, in my opinion, is that feeling of pure pride and joy you get when you’ve successfully finished a project, or conquered a difficult roadblock in your creative process.
While I haven't yet written anything that has been published to the public at large, I have written quite a few complete short stories. Several of these have been ways to explore what makes us broken but beautiful at the same time. One of these pieces in particular, "Petals in the Wind", help to pull a friend of mine out of her spiral of depression and suicidal thoughts. It has always been a goal of mine to touch people's lives with my work, and it remains one of the most inspirational moments as a writer I've ever experienced.
During my college years, I plan to continue working on my own personal writing as well as pursuing a degree in all forms of writing, whether it be creative or informative. I plan to use my writing to help build up the community around me, like I did at my high school by starting the school newspaper. Writing is one of my biggest passions in life, and I cant wait to learn more about the craft and share my skills with the world. Never underestimate the power of a good book!
