I have always been involved in team sports, and I view the fire service field as team driven to accomplish the same goal of helping others. I want to be a part of a team of people that are looking out for others. I have taken ride along opportunities at my local fire department, and saw first hand the camaraderie between the fire fighters and EMT service within the fire station. They welcomed me and showed me many different aspects of working in that setting. I really enjoy the thought of the fire service as a team/family of people working together. In addition, I have completed my EMT-B certification. I have started working as an EMT for local sporting events in the area, and have learned from others in that role. I know that I have a lot to learn before I reach my goals of becoming a fire figther, but I am confident that I will have people around me that will help me learn and grow as a fire fighter. I am wanting to complete my bachelor's degree before entering a fire station. I have the ultimate goal of becoming a fire chief and want to get my education completed before joining a fire station. Many fire fighers have told me the importance of getting my schooling done first, because of the demands of the job when I start. The fire service is a well-respected profession that is geared toward public service. I want to give back to the community that I live in and want to help others. At the end of the day I believe it is important to be there for other people, and the fire service is the epitome of helping others. I have always looked up to the fire fighters and wanted to be a part of something like that. I want to be the person that kids in the community look to for help and know that I will be able to answer the call when needed. I need to be a compassionate person that can be a shoulder to lean on if needed. But at the same time a person that can handle a difficult situation with a sense of calmness to get the job done. People look to firefighters when they are in need of help, and want to be reassured that those helping them can accomplish the task at hand.

My grandfather, who went my many different names such as Pop, Papa Bones, OG, Jack, John, G-Pa, and many others was someone that I will always remember that seemed to be an expert in everything. I called him "Pop" most of the time, and he recently passed way this past summer. He served in the military as a Marine. I have always been interested in the military and I think he just loved to tell me stories of things that he did and what he went through as a Marine. He was extremely proud that he had served and had many different military items in his computer room. The thing I will remember the most about Pop is that it didn't matter what it was, but he could fix it, put it back together or completely dismantle it. Anytime there was something not working correctly at our house my mom wouldn't ask my dad to fix it, she would call Pop right away. He'd come over and most of the time would fix it. He seemed to always be at our house doing something in the yard or doing work around our house more than he would his own home. He would be planting flowers outside, and doing different landscape things around our house. I just think he just wanted an excuse to come by and see us. Another things that he loved was his computer, after the military he worked as a newspaper editor and had become very good with technology. He would always be in his office playing around on his computer. Most computers do not last more than a couple of years, but he seemed to get his to last forever. He would always tell my dad about how he added some new software, equipment, or something to make his computer to work better. I like to think about how he was able to fix things and do things for us around our house. As he got sick he wasn't able to do as much and it frustrated him that he couldn't do the things he always had before. I won't remember those times about Pop. I want to remember him as the expert on all things and how he would do anything to help us. He was also my personal "uber" driver getting me to different things for school or for the different sports that we were involved with. I miss him and know that he would be proud of me.

As I have gone through school I have realized that I want to pursue a career as a firefighter. This past year I have taken classes at the career center through my high school, and have confirmed that I want to become a firefighter. My ultimate goal is to become a fire chief and lead a group of people working to help others. I have always been involved in athletics and been involved in working as a team. My experiences at the career center have taught me how to lead others as well as working together to accomplish our tasks. I have enjoyed working with others that share the same passion that I have and want to learn the skills needed to become a first responder. My parents have friends that are first responders and I have had many conversations with them about the career and what they do on a regular basis. This career excites me and goes along with my passion of being active and physically fit. I have completed two triathlons which has taught me perseverance and commitment. The training for the triathlons was challenging, but it taught me that how to reach my goals even though at times I didn't want to finish a workout. This past year was challenging because I have always played baseball, but unfortunately I did not get as much playing time as I had expected. This experience was difficult, but it forced me to continue to work hard and put my best effort forward. Ultimately, that experience allowed me to pursue triathlons and other forms of activities that I might now have tried. Other the past several years I have volunteered my time as a videographer at my high school for some of our athletic programs. I have created social media content for wrestling, girls basketball, boys basketball, and football. I have received awards for the work I created by the fine arts department. In addition, I have helped lead clinics for the youth baseball and soccer program in my town. I also helped lead a station for the winter coat drive. All these experiences have helped me realize the importance of helping others and giving back to the community. As a first responder I will constantly be working with people in the community. While my ultimate goal is to become a fire chief, I plan to get my EMT/Paramedic certification. It is important that all firefighters have the skills to help others in medical need. I believe in order to be an effective fire chief it is important to be able to perform many different skills and understand how each department within a fire department works. I plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in fire protection administration to learn and understand the different aspects of a the fire department and first responders. I would like to obtain many different certifications to become a more well rounded member of a fire department. I believe I have the ability and desire to not only be a member of a fire department, but to help lead others.

I've always wanted to be a firefighter, and this year's classes at the career center have really cemented that dream. I'm learning tons of hands-on skills for fire scenes, plus teamwork and communication – basically everything I need to be a good firefighter. It's awesome to finally be on the right track! I really enjoyed watching the success of the USA athletes and how they worked through the challenges they faced. Rai Bejamin is one athlete that I felt that I could relate to, because of his resilience, determination, and quiet professionalism. Rai has had to overcome injuries and setbacks over his career that made him want to work harder to succeed. He could have easily given up and not focused on his Olympic dreams after some of his injuries over the years, but he kept pushing forward with the goal of being an Olympic champion. I have also faced setbacks in my athletic career that made me push harder to achieve my goals. I have recently completed two triathlon's that have challenged my mental and physical toughness. Unlike some athletes who might seek the spotlight, Benjamin maintains a more reserved demeanor. He lets his performance speak for itself, focusing on his training and competition rather than seeking attention through outlandish behavior or statements. I enjoy watching athletes that let their performance do the talking and not get involved with showboating. Rai is not as well known as some other Olympic track stars, but goes about his business preparing for his next race without seeking admiration. I believe that is a quality I would like to see more athletes have, and to let their actions speak louder. When I think of Team USA, one athlete immediately comes to mind: Rai Benjamin.
