Frontline Heroes Nursing Grant
Everyone has dreamed of being a hero and saving the day! I actually want to be a HERO EVERYDAY in the career of nursing. I had the pleasure of being around the most passionate and professional nursing I have ever met in the cancer center at Cabrini Hospital, while I was in active treatment for Metastatic Triple Negative Adenocarcinoma. I always wanted to be a nurse, I actually went through PCT school to get started, but I was positive that I wanted to become a Oncology nurse during this treatment. The feeling of pure love and concern for fighters was overwhelming and I am positive that the treatment I received helped me gain a NED report. I want to be an EVERYDAY Hero and help those fighters who are where I once was, scared and afraid of the cancer diagnosis. I have a duty to help them get the wonderful and professional treatment that I received, only I will have the knowledge from both prospectives. I have been the patient that had a double mastectomy and total hysterectomy. I have been so afraid that I trembled while on the operating table with my head harnessed and my arms in restraints to get the port placed. I have completed the 18 rounds of chemo, that caused complications and lost all of my hair. I have completed 35 rounds of radiation that caused 3rd degree burns to my body even parts that were not directly being treated. I have been diagnosed more than once and completed surgery and treatment more than once! I am the perfect person to be an example that all cancer diagnoses are not death sentences. I already have the knowledge of a patient/fighter, I now need the education of a professional Registered nurse and I will be a triple threat! I have the heart and compassion for nursing and I have been this person throughout my entire life. I have the knowledge of being a patient and knowing what a patient expects from the nurse and I will have the training and education needed to seal the deal. Also, I was raised with a perfect example of a Hero, my aunt who raised me and I call Mom was a nurse. I had a front row seat to watch her get ready for work, I even helped by ironing her snow white uniforms and polishing her formularies. I am positive that those experiences were the beginning of my passion.
I am proud of myself for starting school the day before having a chest wall lumpectomy and completing some classes with 70 sutures and a JP drain in place. I am proud of the determination to succeed that is instilled in me no matter life's challenges. I am a mother of 7 with 5 grandchildren and I held that title while completing cancer treatment. I am proud to finally be on the course of becoming a Hero. I am a true believer of staying the course and with faith and determination I will be that Hero!
