WinnerBio
My name is Bayron Espaillat. I am the first person in my family to go to college, and I want to become a doctor. More specifically, as a cardiac surgeon, I want to help people with heart problems because my family has a history of it, and I don't want others to be affected by it. I know I can contribute to the medical field in enhancing treatments for people, so that they can live full lives.

WinnerThis past year, I noticed a pattern in my home that was hard to miss. My family and I had become increasingly slugging in our daily lives. My parents, siblings and I woke up feeling tired. Over time it wasn’t just being physically tied, but it started to affect our moods and focus. Personally it started taking a toll on my mental health, and everyday life felt more draining each and everyday. I knew I had to break out of this cycle, so I started researching what could be causing it.
I went donw a rabbit whole of information, I read articles and research papers, watched videos, about how the human body regulates it self, and how to increase body function. I learned that small lifestyle habits can have a mojoor impact on health and productivity, knowing that I started making changes in my home.
The first change I made was increasing our water intake. I set reminders on everbodyes phones to consistently drink water through the day, over time i also noticed this not only improved our energy but also helped maintained our appetite and decreased snaking. I focused on sleep consistency, encouraging all of us to go to sleep by 10 p.m, if something wasn’t done by then, it should be done the next morning. Another major thing was to increase our light intake, I kept windows and curtains open longer during the day and made the effort to go outside more. Personally I went on runs, completed homework in naturally bright places instead of my room and even sat on the balcony while watching tv so I could get more sunlight. sAfter consistently developing habits I noticed a shift. I became more focused in school, more motivated through the day and I stopped just trying to “make it through friday” kinda attitude. This is not the only way i’ve used science to improve my family daily life.
I have used sciece to lower our electricity bills by learning how appliances and items affect house electricity. Reducing food waste in my house by improving storage conditions and using moisture, airflow, temptutare to keep food lasting longer. Even boosting my younger siblings studying habits by learning their attention spans and develop routines using the information, i’ve made my daily life a little bit easier. Continuing my pursuit of science will help me bring easier life to others and not just myself, especially since I want to take a path to the medical field.
