Emergency 9-1-1! Many people think of this when I tell them I want to have a career in the medical field. Many people ask if I want to be a nurse in the ER "where all the action happens." I have gotten very accustomed to their shock when I tell them I want to work in a medical lab. I live in a small rural town in the Midwest and have grown up watching crime shows like CSI with my family. My mother is a teacher with an endorsement in Middle School Science. I believe it is her love for Science that has led me on this chemical journey. My mother always made science connections everywhere we went and fostered a love for science and learning in me. I truly found my passion for lab work when I was in High School. My Junior year Science teacher used to work in a government lab before she became a teacher. Just listening to her stories about all the wonderful discoveries she helped with and how she helped others to think outside the box to find solutions that are not always obvious really intrigued me. I began to really think to myself, " The lab is calling me and I must go!" I began college at Western Illinois University this fall. I had done my research on colleges and what majors were offered. I made the college visit and talked to the Chemistry department head. She suggested a path in a major that I really had not given too much thought to, forensic chemistry! I am now on my path to becoming a forensic chemist. I could not think of a better career, or life choice for myself. I have the best of both worlds!
