Since I was young, the healthcare field was fascinating me. I decided that one day I will get into the STEM field, to be a healthcare professional. I started watching medical-related shows when I was ten years old. I wasn’t the type of child who watched Disney, or Nickelodeon. Even to this day, I feel confused when my friends are having a discussion about a specific Disney show that I never watched. Whenever I opened the television, I scrolled through the channels to see if my favorite shows were streaming. These shows included House, Holby City, and Grey’s Anatomy. Even though most of the words used in these shows seemed complicated and long to me, I enjoyed watching operations and learning human anatomy. In 2011, my parents divorced due to multiple problems between them; manipulation, and control by my dad. Even though I heard them fighting many times, I never expected divorce to break my household. A lot changed after the divorce, where we stayed, how we went to school, and our lifestyle. It all felt strange. But the problems between my dad and mom didn’t stop. Continuous manipulation and obsessive control by my dad led to him murdering my mom in 2016. Another very unexpected event occurred. It was a shock to me when I heard what happened. I didn't think my dad would be capable of committing such a crime. To his ex-wife. The mother of his children. This traumatic experience didn't only change my life, but it changed me as a person. The way I acted, and thought about things, everything changed. I learned the values of life through this experience. If it weren't for my mom's strength and what she went through, I wouldn’t be this persevering and motivated in my studies. I wouldn’t be on top of my graduating class. I wouldn't be a first-generation student going into the STEM field. I wouldn't be many things. With my degree in Biomedical Sciences and studies in Physician Assistant school, I am aspiring to be a dedicated healthcare professional. Not many have the opportunity to receive such education as I do, and many in the U.S. are privileged to get. That is why I am going to use my higher education for a good cause, helping others around me. I want to make healthcare more accessible. Especially to women and immigrants. I remember when I had just moved to the United States and I didn't have any insurance. This had consequences on my health since I wasn’t able to go to the hospital or a clinic like people normally would. No one should be in such a state where they aren’t able to get proper healthcare because they don't have the money to pay for it. Especially in the U.S., where healthcare is pricey. I know how it feels to be one of these people, which is why I am ready to advocate and help in making a change in this problem in my community.
