My name is Barbara Watkins, and I’m a passionate educator and doctoral student from Rayville, Louisiana. I graduated from Rayville High School in 2009 and continued my education at Grambling State University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Paralegal Studies in 2013. I later earned a Master’s in Criminal Justice in 2015 and a Master’s in Social Science with a concentration in Psychology. Currently, I’m pursuing my Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction: Special Education at Liberty University. I am a proud first-generation college graduate. I’m one of three children on my mother’s side and one of fourteen children on my father’s side. I’m also the proud mother of a smart, funny, and active two-year-old daughter who inspires me every day. Before entering the field of education, I gained valuable experience working as a parole officer, correctional officer, mental health activity coordinator, and child protective services investigator. Over the past three years, I’ve followed my true passion—working in education and supporting students with special needs. My ultimate goal is to write curriculum specifically designed for high-functioning special education students. I believe all students deserve instruction that meets their unique strengths. One day, I hope to serve as a school principal or special education chairperson, where I can lead with empathy, purpose, and a deep commitment to student success.
