As a Black American woman pursuing postgraduate education abroad, my journey into higher education has been both challenging and transformative. For many in my community, the idea of studying abroad or pursuing an advanced degree is uncommon. Navigating the educational system as an outsider has presented obstacles, but it has also shaped my goals and aspirations. As a first-generation immigrant, I’ve faced several challenges that have not only impacted my academic journey but have also influenced my future objectives. One of the biggest challenges I face is that, as a Black woman, it is not common in my community to study abroad or pursue postgraduate education, especially in specialized fields like couture fashion. The idea of further education beyond an undergraduate degree is often not seen as attainable, and few people I know have considered studying internationally. This lack of precedent in my community has led to feelings of isolation at times, as there is not a strong network of people who can provide guidance or mentorship for someone navigating these uncharted territories. The absence of a roadmap has made the process of applying to and adjusting to life in graduate school abroad feel more daunting. There are few resources available for students from my background, and the path I’m walking feels unfamiliar, often making me feel like an outsider in higher education. Another major obstacle has been the financial strain of pursuing an arts degree, particularly in a field as specialized as couture fashion. The financial resources available to support students in creative fields, especially those from underrepresented communities, are limited. Unlike more traditional academic programs, fashion doesn’t have the same level of institutional funding or scholarships. The costs associated with tuition, living expenses, materials, and travel have added significant pressure to my educational journey. To make this possible, I had to work for several years to save enough money to pursue my education, which delayed my academic progression. While I’m grateful for the opportunity to study, the financial burden has reinforced the inequality in higher education, especially for those without financial backing. This challenge has not only delayed my education but also taught me the value of perseverance, resilience, and hard work. Despite these obstacles, my experiences have deeply influenced my future goals. They’ve fueled my determination to succeed and to help others navigate the barriers I’ve faced. Through my brand, BDUBZZ, I aim to empower marginalized communities, particularly Black and POC individuals, to pursue higher education and personal growth through the intersection of fashion and learning. My brand seeks to provide mentorship, resources, and support to individuals looking to pursue education abroad and to offer a platform where they can merge their academic and personal passions. The challenges I’ve faced as a Black American woman and first-generation immigrant have inspired me to create opportunities for others. My journey has shaped my belief that education should be accessible to all, regardless of background or financial status. I hope to use my story and the knowledge I gain to inspire others to overcome their own barriers and make a positive impact in their communities. Ultimately, I aim to prove that despite the challenges, success is possible and that we can create change through determination, resilience, and a commitment to education.
    Pushing Our Scholars Forward
I enrolled in my current master’s program in Italy, specializing in couture fashion, to immerse myself in the country’s rich fashion heritage and refine my skills in creating sustainable, high-quality garments. Italy’s history of craftsmanship offers a unique opportunity to learn couture techniques that align with my mission to challenge fast fashion. This program allows me to gain the expertise necessary to produce garments that emphasize longevity, sustainability, and ethical production, which are central to my brand, BDUBZZ. BDUBZZ exists at the intersection of fashion and education. The brand aims to empower individuals by blending intellectual growth with self-expression through style. I believe education and fashion can complement each other, inspiring personal and societal change. Through BDUBZZ, I seek to encourage people to embrace learning as an enriching journey that extends beyond the classroom, showing that education and fashion can work together to empower and uplift individuals. The knowledge I acquire in this program will directly support BDUBZZ’s mission of promoting ethical fashion. Learning about couture techniques will enable me to design garments that adhere to sustainable practices, such as using eco-friendly materials, ensuring zero-waste production, and reducing carbon emissions. With increasing awareness of the environmental and social impact of fast fashion, BDUBZZ aims to set a new standard for responsible fashion. By focusing on high-quality, timeless designs over disposable trends, I hope to shift consumer mindsets towards investing in clothing that lasts and contributes to a sustainable future. Moreover, BDUBZZ is committed to inclusivity and versatility. The brand emphasizes empowering Black and POC communities by offering a platform where diverse backgrounds and perspectives are celebrated. This commitment goes beyond racial diversity; it’s about creating a space for people to express themselves authentically. Through BDUBZZ, I aim to provide educational resources, mentorship opportunities, and fashion collections that foster personal growth while allowing individuals to feel seen and represented. The brand encourages consumers to engage with both their intellectual and personal development in ways that are meaningful to them. Balancing work and study has been both challenging and rewarding. I work to support myself financially, which enables me to continue my education, but this often limits the time I have for studying and cultural exploration. The intensity of the program leaves little room to immerse myself in the Italian environment, which I believe is an essential part of understanding the broader fashion culture. While work ensures I can pursue my academic goals, it strains the time I can dedicate to exploring the local culture and gaining deeper insights into the fashion world. Despite these challenges, working while studying has taught me valuable lessons in time management and discipline. It has helped me stay focused on my long-term goals while balancing immediate financial needs. This experience has strengthened my resilience and determination to pursue my vision for BDUBZZ, even when faced with obstacles. In the future, the skills and knowledge I gain from this program will help me grow BDUBZZ into a brand that sets a new standard for ethical, sustainable, and inclusive fashion. By merging fashion with education, BDUBZZ will inspire individuals to make conscious choices in both their intellectual and personal growth, contributing to a more informed and responsible world.
    Elevate Black Entrepreneurs Scholarship
From a young age, I was inspired by entrepreneurship, largely due to the influence of my parents, both of whom run their own small businesses. Watching them navigate the challenges and rewards of business ownership instilled in me a sense of independence and drive. I realized that entrepreneurship was not just about creating a business, but about making an impact, solving problems, and offering something of value to the world. This understanding shaped my path and led me to create BDUBZZ, a business at the intersection of academics and fashion that seeks to combine my passion for education, sustainability, and social change. BDUBZZ is more than just a fashion brand—it’s a movement that encourages the pursuit of knowledge and promotes a more sustainable approach to fashion. My vision for BDUBZZ is to focus on slow, ethical, and eco-conscious fashion while simultaneously inspiring future generations to continue their education, whether through traditional higher education or autodidactic routes. I want to empower individuals, particularly those from Black and POC communities, both in the U.S. and abroad, to pursue education as a means to better themselves and their communities. This mission is deeply personal because I believe that education, paired with the ability to create and innovate, can be transformative. The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation, and its reliance on fast fashion has created a cycle of overconsumption and waste. BDUBZZ aims to break that cycle by offering fashion that not only looks good but does good. We focus on high-quality, timeless pieces made with sustainable materials and ethical practices. By promoting slow fashion, we hope to inspire others to make more mindful purchases that consider the impact on both the planet and the people who make the clothes. Through this, we aim to shift the narrative around fashion, showing that it’s possible to be both stylish and environmentally conscious. But the influence of BDUBZZ goes beyond fashion. I want it to be a resource for individuals, particularly those in underserved communities, to pursue education—whether that means attending college, gaining trade skills, or being self-taught. The knowledge gained through education empowers people to think critically, engage with the world around them, and create positive change. This is why BDUBZZ places a strong emphasis on bridging the gap between fashion and academia, inspiring people to better themselves through knowledge while also contributing to a more sustainable, ethical world. I was inspired to pursue this idea after noticing the lack of representation and resources for Black and POC communities in both the fashion industry and the broader realm of higher education. From my own experience, I know the value of having mentors and resources that support one’s growth, and I want BDUBZZ to provide that support for others. I hope that through our platform, we can not only provide access to fashion but also valuable educational resources, mentorship, and guidance for those seeking to better their lives and communities. One of my primary goals is to set a high standard for the fashion industry, showing that it is possible to operate with integrity, prioritize sustainability, and still be successful. I want BDUBZZ to be a notable source of information that actually produces results. Whether it's offering advice on how to transition to more ethical fashion or providing resources on pursuing education abroad or locally, I want BDUBZZ to be a trusted voice for those who are serious about creating a better future. Ultimately, I hope to inspire individuals to think critically about their purchases, their education, and their impact on the world. The intersection of fashion, education, and sustainability is where I see the future of BDUBZZ, and I’m excited to continue building this vision. My journey as an entrepreneur is just beginning, but I’m committed to creating a lasting impact on both the fashion industry and the communities I aim to serve. Through BDUBZZ, I hope to lead by example, showing that business can be a force for good, and that with creativity, ethics, and a commitment to lifelong learning, we can truly change the world.

Fashion design is more than an art form for me; it’s a way to blend creativity with the power to influence culture and society. From a young age, I’ve been captivated by the world of fashion, not only because of its aesthetic appeal but because of the message clothing conveys. Fashion is a language, and I aim to use it to communicate ideas that inspire and create positive change. What excites me most about fashion is its ability to bridge cultures. I’m eager to work in an industry where diverse ideas intersect. I want to be a resource for young people—especially those academically driven, fashion-conscious, and interested in studying abroad—by helping them navigate the complexities of pursuing higher education and careers in fashion. I hope to empower the next generation by sharing my experiences, helping them overcome obstacles like language barriers, and encouraging them to confidently embrace international opportunities. One of my greatest motivations is becoming a polyglot. Understanding different languages and cultures will broaden my creative perspective and allow me to engage with people on a deeper level. In an industry as global as fashion, mastering multiple languages will enable me to communicate and collaborate effectively with professionals from around the world, making me a more versatile designer. Additionally, I’m committed to ensuring that my work has a positive impact on the world. One of my key goals is to pursue higher education that teaches me how to run an ethical fashion business that is conscious of its environmental and societal impact. Fashion is a resource-intensive industry, and I want to contribute to solving the challenges it faces. My aim is to create designs that are not only innovative but also sustainable. My creativity is ever-evolving, much like the rose dress I created. With each new hobby, endeavor, and source of inspiration, I plant a seed that is nurtured and watered, eventually blossoming into something beautiful. I hope that, in time, the paths of my creative journey will grow from the train of a dress into an abundant garden of roses
    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Harnessing Mental Wellness as a Compass to Success I enthusiastically apply for the Mental Health Importance Scholarship with the firm belief that maintaining mental health is pivotal to both personal and professional success. As a diligent student and an aspiring fashion connoisseur, I, Brenda DuBois, recognize the necessity of preserving my mental wellness to navigate the dynamic world of fashion. My ethos is rooted in the principle that mental health affects every aspect of our lives, from the cognitive processes to emotional reactions, stress management, and critical decision-making abilities. Thus, preserving mental health is not merely a personal responsibility but a prerequisite for meaningful contributions to society. Throughout my academic journey culminating in the attainment of a perfect GPA, it was crystal clear to me that the cornerstone of my success was a holistic approach to mental wellness. One might wonder, what are the protective measures I adopt to uphold my mental health? My regimen comprises regular self-care practices. Firstly, I have found mindfulness meditation profoundly effective. Even amid the hustle of academic pursuits and my passion for the fast-paced fashion world, meditative practices help me retain a sense of tranquility. They provide a safe space to understand and acknowledge my thoughts and feelings, inextricably linking to my productivity and creativity as a fashion student. Secondly, I strive to stay connected with my loved ones, as they are my tether to emotional stability. Often, the academic and professional journey becomes strenuous, and it’s the genuine conversations, the shared laughter, and heartfelt advice from my dear ones that sustain me. In this interconnected world, fostering these relationships aids my emotional well-being, ensuring I don't lose sight of myself amidst the whirlwind of my academic and professional endeavors. Engaging in activities that stimulate joy and contentment forms another aspect of maintaining my mental wellness. For me, fashion, with its limitless creative potential and capacity to stimulate intellectual discourse, serves as a sanctuary. As a black woman, navigating the fashion world poses unique challenges. However, these challenges instead fuel my passion, interweaving my love for fashion with my endeavor to promote inclusivity and diversity within the industry. It is an activity that elicits joy while simultaneously enhancing my intellectual capabilities and expanding my perspective in monumental ways. Lastly, I hold a steadfast belief in the importance of seeking support when needed. The concept of vulnerability, often perceived negatively, is an essential component of mental wellness. Accepting that we could sometimes use a helping hand is, in fact, a testament to our strength. This realization has empowered me to seek guidance and support throughout my academic journey, contributing significantly to my performance and personal growth. My approach to maintaining mental health underlines my courage and resilience, providing a strong foundation for my pursuit of a career in the fashion industry. As a candidate for the Mental Health Importance Scholarship, I will continue to champion mental wellness whilst striving to make the fashion world more inclusive. All while inspiring my peers to underscore the importance of one’s mental health in their personal and professional lives.
