Bio

I am passionate about electronics. I love to solder and build things. I strive to graduate with at least a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. One of my life goals is to become a successful electrical and computer engineer who creates new ways of improving technology and making sure that I am available to mentor young women like myself to become the future face of STEM-related fields. I am a great candidate for all scholarships because I am an African-American female who was 3rd out of 281 students in my high school graduating class, and I finished with a 4.41 GPA. As a newly transitioning college freshman, I am the only African-American woman in my major. That fact does not deter me one bit. College is costly, and anytime I can apply to receive financial help, I will do so with the hope of winning.

Essay My name is Ayo Overton, and my first name is pronounced as (I-yo). I am the only daughter of my parents, Jeffrey and Joy and I have an older brother named Jeffrey, II who just graduated with a degree in Computer Informatics. I love electronics, soldering, reading, writing stories, and spending time with my family. I am a freshman at Rowan University and my major is Electrical and Computer Engineering. I had Electronics classes for four years at my high school, Burlington County Institute of Technology. Being able to not only build electronic circuits but write computer code as well is like a dream come true for me. At Rowan, I am learning from some of the best instructors, and I will be a part of one of the top engineering programs in the country. When thinking about going to college and beyond, it is important to set short-term and long-term goals for your future. I must have the dedication to put in the time and effort to achieve my goals. I have joined a like-minded community at Rowan University called The Engineering Learning Community (ELC) where I have and will continue to meet and study alongside fellow electrical and computer engineering students. I also have joined the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). These are just a few steps I need to take to reach my aspirations of being successful. In the future, I see myself as a college graduate with at least a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. I will use all the knowledge I obtained while attending college to improve on technologies that exist in our current digital world. I also intend to help innovate more efficient electrical and computer-related products. I want to learn more about current technology and find ways to greatly improve computer and phone technology. As I gain more understanding and research topics related to my major, it will help me create solutions to problems within my course of study. I intend to work closely with my classmates and professors and to collaborate and solve problems together. I will ask many questions and learn as much as I can from others to gain a better understanding of my major. I intend to apply for internships at companies like Radwell, Opex, Lockheed Martin, NASA, Boeing, and more. After graduating from college, my goal is to secure a job with one of these companies and help them improve technology. However, my goals will continue even further because I strive to do more than what is normally expected. I know I will enjoy the challenges of creating new ways to improve technology and innovative products. As an African American young adult, I am inspired every time I see women in a STEM field fulfilling their dreams. As I aim to give my all, like those who have ventured into STEM fields of study, I know I will truly succeed. If Katherine Johnson’s love for math helped NASA put an astronaut into orbit and then a man on the moon, what can my love for electrical and computer engineering do? I cannot wait to see it.
