My name is Ay’kerra Douling, and I am a 17-year-old student from Maryland. For my Freshman and half of my sophomore years of high school, I attended public school in West Virginia, where I used to live. I was in a choir, and we would have concerts every few months. Now, I am a senior, and I attend a private online homeschool, where I currently have a 3.4 GPA.
My passion for the culinary arts began at a young age. When I was about six years old, I would help my mom, grandma, and mommom in the kitchen as they prepared dinner. I can still remember myself standing on a stool so I could reach the counter, stirring pots, and handing them ingredients. Those experiences taught me the joy of cooking and the way food brings people together.
That early spark has grown into a strong dream of becoming a professional chef and opening my own restaurant in the future. Cooking allows me to express my creativity, bring joy to others, and work toward building something meaningful.
I am hardworking, determined, and motivated to achieve my goals. I believe that with dedication and continuous learning, I can create the successful future I envision for myself.

Martha Brooks Culinary Arts Scholarship
My name is Ay’kerra Douling, and I am a 17-year-old student from Houston, Texas. I currently attend a private online homeschool program, where I have maintained a 3.4 GPA. Being homeschooled has allowed me to build strong self-discipline, time management skills, and independence qualities that I know will serve me well in the culinary world.
From a young age, I’ve been drawn to the kitchen. Cooking has always been more than just preparing food it is a way for me to be creative, share joy with others, and connect with people in a meaningful way. Over the years, my interest has grown into a passion, and I now know without a doubt that I want to pursue a career in culinary arts. My dream is to one day open my own restaurant, where I can combine flavors, culture, and hospitality to create memorable experiences for others.
I am choosing the culinary field because it allows me to turn something I truly love into a lifelong career. Becoming a chef requires dedication, long hours, and constant growth, but I am motivated by the idea of building something from the ground up. I don’t see challenges as obstacles, I see them as opportunities to grow stronger. My determination, along with my willingness to work hard and stay focused, pushes me to keep striving toward my goals even when the path is not easy.
What excites me most about a culinary arts career is not only the opportunity to learn and perfect my craft but also the chance to share it with my community. Food has a unique ability to bring people together across cultures, generations, and backgrounds. Through my future restaurant, I want to create a space where people feel welcomed, cared for, and connected through the meals I serve.
Giving back to my community is a very important part of my long-term vision. In Houston, we have a rich food culture and many diverse communities, but there are also areas where access to healthy, affordable, and fresh food is limited. In the future, I hope to be part of the solution by using my restaurant as more than just a business. I want it to be a platform for outreach whether through food drives, affordable meal programs, or community cooking classes that teach people how to make nourishing meals at home.
My journey is just beginning, but I am excited about the road ahead. Culinary school will give me the foundation I need to strengthen my skills, learn from professionals, and prepare for the demands of running a kitchen. This scholarship would help me take that important first step toward my dream. I am committed to working hard, growing as both a chef and a leader, and using my career to make a difference, not just for myself, but for the people around me.
