FinalistBio
My name is Avy Atwood. From my youth, I’ve been someone to chase every opportunity, whether or not I even realized it. From Spelling Bee to Science Fair, excellence has always been my standard.
Growing up, I fouled out of one too many basketball games. It became a running joke with everyone in the stands to congratulate me when I got to stay in all four quarters. This streak happened because I am so passionate about what I choose to invest my energy into. I know one cannot give more than 100% of themself into something, yet, I’m the embodiment of 110%. The pride of presenting my best in everything I do matters greatly to me, even if my best doesn’t equate to a first place title. Learning has been a passion of mine for longer than I can remember. I have naturally assumed leadership roles throughout my life, inspiring the individuals I lead to become better, gladly offering service to all those around me as soon as I identify a need. Furthering my leadership, knowledge, and service to my community has helped shape me into an even more well-rounded individual.
As previously mentioned, I chase every opportunity that comes my way. Success or failure, I wouldn’t change any of the efforts I’ve put in, as the choices I’ve made yesterday have created who I am today.

Vanilla Ice said it for me, “If there [is] a problem, yo I’ll solve it.” I’m not sure if I have nurture or nature to thank for my knack of recognizing problems and instinctively drawing solutions in my mind, regardless, I’m a solver. With this, I’ve learned how to channel my talents to better each community I’m a part of.
A recent example of my problem solving is a question and answer panel I organized and moderated for my school. Through years of observation, I realized that many of my students were turning to drugs and alcohol because they had nowhere else to turn with their challenges questions. Providing a solution to this issue because a priority of mine. The answer I worked into existence was a panel assembly. I titled it the Let's Just Be Real assembly. Students submitted questions and a panel of experts answered. Collaborating with everyone from my school administration to janitorial team, and local Care Coalition to the drama department, ensured a successful experience. I pondered in the context of my diverse student body to determine who would be best suited to communicate relatable answers. I invited my superintendent, a licensed therapist, beloved coaches, and teachers from within my school district. During a response, Superintendent Salas emotionally noted, "I wish I knew who wrote this question." She was later greeted by that student and a meaningful conversation started. My effort provided a space for students to come with questions, be offered ideas, and decide their next steps. "I wish everyone could have been in here today,” “I hope this becomes a tradition,” and “Every student took notes the entire time,” were pieces of glowing praise offered. Leaving me with even greater desires and abilities to help, this worthwhile experience showed me the impact that I can truly make.
Thanksgiving Heroes is a national nonprofit that raises money to gift Thanksgiving meals to families and individuals in need. In my area of Carbon County, around 150 meals are provided annually. I've connected our volunteer drivers to the homes they'd be delivering to through assigning their locations. This integral part of the operation was essential, yet even more impactful to me was when I had the opportunity to drop meals off myself. Having the chance to gift a special meal to someone who didn't think they'd have one elevated my gratitude for what I have and what I've been able to give.
Another way I’ve served is a partnership I held with Harambe Humanitarian, a nonprofit organization based in Kenya. To sell handmade art crafted by the Masaii women in order to purchase reusable feminine products for schoolgirls. Attending classes while on their periods seems simple, but is a huge feat. School can help end cycles of child marriages, abuse, and other hardships that come from lack of education for women in Kenya. I sold this art at multiple craft fairs and pop up shops to raise funds and awareness for this cause. Additionally, I have followed the journey of Harambe closely on social media. It has provided me with deep satisfaction to see how happy the girls are when they receive their pads. I aspire to have a career in medicine. The connections I've made and the perspective I've earned through this endeavor has left me excited to work with people domestically and foreign.
