Many people learn how to survive, but not always how to dream. For me, survival and dreaming have always been intertwined. When I was eight, my father left and moved across the country, leaving my mother and me to navigate a family upheaval that I could not control. At that age, life felt uncertain, and I quickly realized that some circumstances were beyond my ability to fix. Yet, even amid that instability, I discovered that I could control my own actions, choices, and learning. School became my dream and my refuge, a place where effort and perseverance translated into progress, and where I began to understand that I could build something meaningful for myself despite difficult circumstances. That same determination that allowed me to survive those early challenges now fuels my desire to step beyond my familiar world and immerse myself in new ones through study abroad. In high school, I fractured my back while pursuing ballet, a passion that had long defined my identity. The recovery was long and difficult, but it also brought unexpected opportunities. I switched high schools during that time, where I met a foreign exchange student from Denmark. We became best friends, and that friendship opened my eyes to life beyond my immediate environment. The summer after junior year, I visited her in Denmark, experiencing firsthand how different cultures approach daily life, education, and community. After graduating, I uprooted my life and moved to Denmark for several months while completing school online. That experience inspired me to change my major to Global Studies, fueling my passion for understanding other cultures and the interconnectedness of the world. Since then, I have traveled to eight countries, immersing myself in diverse communities, and I am now preparing for my next adventure studying abroad in Prague at Charles University. Studying abroad represents the next step in turning survival into intentional creation. This program excites me because it offers the chance to immerse myself fully in another culture, engage with history, politics, and daily life from a perspective I cannot gain at home, and expand my understanding of the world in ways that will inform my future goals. Living and learning abroad will challenge me to step outside my comfort zone, navigate unfamiliar systems, and interact with people from diverse backgrounds, all skills essential to the life I hope to create. Academically, I aim to deepen my knowledge of global systems, diplomacy, and cultural nuance, which are critical to my aspiration of becoming a U.S. Foreign Service Officer. Personally, I hope to develop independence, confidence, and adaptability while navigating life in a new context. At this stage, I am preparing applications, arranging housing, and planning coursework to align with my goals. Every step of this process reinforces my commitment to making the most of this opportunity and demonstrates my readiness to engage fully with the challenges and rewards of living abroad. I know that immersing myself in a new environment will push me to be resourceful, resilient, and hopeful in new ways, allowing me to practice building a life I actively choose rather than simply inheriting. Ultimately, studying abroad is about turning survival into creation. It is about taking the lessons I have learned from past challenges, perseverance, adaptation, and self-determination, and applying them to a context where I can dream freely and act boldly. I hope to emerge not only with a deeper understanding of the world but also with the tools and confidence to create a life that is unmistakably my own, shaped by exploration, learning, and meaningful global engagement.

Education has always been my constant, a rock that I could rely on amid the uncertainties of life. When my father left and moved across the country when I was eight, my world shifted in ways I could not control. The stability I once took for granted felt fragile, yet school remained, offering structure and predictability. Later, in high school, I fractured my back while doing what I loved most: dance. Ballet and pre-professional training had been central to my identity for years, and this injury challenged not only my physical abilities but also my sense of purpose. Through these experiences, I discovered that education is more than a series of assignments or exams; it is a space of empowerment, resilience, and personal growth. It is something I can own entirely, knowledge that no one can take from me, and it has shaped the way I approach every aspect of my life. Education has not only provided stability but has also given me direction. Studying Global Studies has allowed me to explore cultures, governments, and global systems in a way that has fundamentally shaped my ambitions. I have developed a deep curiosity about how nations interact, the challenges faced by communities worldwide, and the role individuals can play in creating meaningful change. These interests have crystallized into a clear career goal: I aspire to become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer. Through this work, I hope to bridge cultural gaps, promote international cooperation, and advocate for solutions that have tangible, positive impacts on people’s lives. Without the foundation of education, these ambitions would be abstract; it is through learning that I have discovered both my passion and the path to pursue it. Pursuing this goal, however, requires more than undergraduate study; it demands immersive, real-world experience and cultural understanding. That is why I plan to pursue a master’s degree abroad. Studying internationally will provide first-hand exposure to the political, social, and cultural contexts I hope to engage with as a diplomat. It will allow me to understand global systems from perspectives beyond my own and cultivate the skills necessary to navigate complex international relationships effectively. Immersion in another culture is not a luxury for someone pursuing the Foreign Service, it is a necessity. The knowledge, insight, and adaptability I gain through this experience will directly inform my ability to serve, negotiate, and create positive change in diverse contexts. The challenges I have faced along the way have reinforced my commitment to education and strengthened my resilience. Balancing rigorous academic expectations with demanding work schedules has required discipline, time management, and perseverance. I have worked consistently since I was fifteen to support myself and reduce the financial burden on my family while maintaining a strong GPA and remaining engaged in extracurricular pursuits. These experiences have not only prepared me for the rigors of higher education but have also taught me that obstacles are opportunities for growth rather than barriers to success. Education became my tool for navigating uncertainty, a space where effort and dedication directly translated into progress and accomplishment. Education has also expanded my worldview. It has taught me to think critically, analyze complex issues, and consider multiple perspectives before drawing conclusions. Studying global systems and cultures has emphasized that meaningful change is rarely simple and requires both understanding and empathy. This approach informs not only my academic work but also my future professional ambitions. I aspire to use the skills, knowledge, and perspective I have gained through education to create solutions that are thoughtful, informed, and equitable. In this way, education is not only shaping my personal trajectory, it is enabling me to contribute meaningfully to the broader world. Ultimately, I hope to use my education to build a future that benefits both myself and others. Through diplomacy and international service, I aim to facilitate understanding across cultures, support cooperative initiatives, and address challenges that affect communities globally. The insights I gain from advanced studies abroad will allow me to approach these responsibilities with knowledge, sensitivity, and confidence. Education is more than a stepping stone; it has not only given me knowledge but also the confidence and perspective to take meaningful action. It is the foundation upon which I will construct a career devoted to service, global engagement, and tangible impact. Education has been my constant, my guide, and my motivation. Since I was young, it has been equipping me with the tools to navigate challenges, pursue ambitious goals, and create a life defined by purpose and contribution. Thank you, education, for always being a constant source of guidance, strength, and opportunity for me, even when others could not.

My love for Wicked began when I was nine years old, sitting in the audience of a touring Broadway production, completely captivated by the world unfolding in front of me. At that age, I didn’t have the language to explain why it affected me so deeply; I just knew it felt important. Since then, I’ve returned to it twice more on stage and experienced it again through the recent film adaptation, and each time, it has resonated with me in a new way. What started as childhood awe has grown into a lasting appreciation for a show that feels both entertaining and quietly profound. One of the moments that has stayed with me the most is the song Dancing Through Life. On the surface, it’s lighthearted and playful, encouraging people not to think too hard and to avoid life’s complications. The more I reflected on it, the more I’ve come to see it as a reminder that we only get one chance at life. It doesn’t have to be overly complicated or weighed down by constant overthinking, we are meant to live it fully, to move through it with energy, curiosity, and openness. That idea feels especially meaningful to me as someone who balances so many responsibilities. Sometimes the message isn’t to analyze every step, but simply to keep moving, to keep “dancing,” and to embrace the experience as it comes. Another reason I connect so deeply with Wicked is its central theme: every story has more than one side. The musical challenges the idea of clear-cut heroes and villains, showing how perspective shapes truth. Through Elphaba and Glinda (or Galinda) we see how easily someone can be misunderstood, labeled, or judged without knowing their full story. That message feels incredibly relevant, not just in the world at large, but in everyday life. It has taught me to be more thoughtful, more empathetic, and more willing to question assumptions. As someone who dances and participates in community theatre, I also admire Wicked for its artistry. The choreography, music, and storytelling come together in a way that feels seamless and intentional. Being part of the performing arts myself, I understand the level of discipline, collaboration, and passion required to create something like this. I even got the opportunity to take a dance workshop from one of the cast members; it was truly a life changing experience. Wicked inspires me not only as an audience member but as a performer, to strive for that same level of excellence and emotional connection in my own work. Ultimately, I love Wicked because it meets me where I am in every stage of my life. At nine, it was magical. Now, it feels meaningful. It reminds me to live fully, to stay open-minded, and to recognize that people, and stories, are always more complex than they first appear.

“Select sexual orientation: Prefer not to say.” This is a box I have checked countless times on applications, not because I am unsure of who I am, but because I am not yet in a position where I can safely share that truth with my family. This is my reality - navigating academic and professional opportunities while quietly holding a part of my identity close. I am a bisexual woman, and while I have found acceptance and strength within myself and my chosen community, I continue to balance authenticity with self-preservation at home. I am currently studying Global Studies, driven by a deep passion for understanding cultures, fostering connection, and contributing to meaningful global change. My long-term goal is to become a Foreign Service Officer, where I can serve as a bridge between nations and advocate for diplomacy, inclusion, and cross-cultural understanding. With a strong desire to fully immerse myself in the world, I plan to pursue my master’s degree abroad, believing that lived experience is essential to truly understanding global perspectives. My journey toward self-acceptance began at 15, while attending a private Christian school and training pre-professionally in ballet, dedicating over 35 hours a week to my craft. It was during this time that I realized I was in love with my best friend, a realization that was both profound and deeply challenging given my environment. Growing up in a household where acceptance was not guaranteed, I initially struggled with internal conflict and fear. Over time, however, I have built a strong support system of friends, mentors, and peers who have empowered me to embrace who I am, even if not all parts of my life are fully visible. These experiences have shaped my commitment to supporting others. I strive to be a source of understanding and encouragement for those who may feel unseen or unheard, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. Whether through my personal relationships or my future career, I am dedicated to fostering spaces where individuals feel safe, respected, and valued, something that I lacked growing up. Academically and professionally, I have demonstrated resilience, discipline, and determination. I have maintained a strong academic record while working consistently to support myself and reduce financial strain. Balancing work, education, and personal growth has not always been easy, but it has strengthened my ability to persevere and remain focused on my goals. Financially, pursuing higher education presents a significant challenge. Having worked since a young age, I understand the value of hard work and responsibility, yet the cost of continuing my education, especially with aspirations to study abroad, remains a barrier. Support would not only ease that burden but would allow me to fully invest in my academic and professional development without constant financial pressure. This scholarship would be more than financial assistance; it would be an investment in a student who is committed to growth, service, and global impact. I carry with me not only my ambitions, but also the resilience shaped by my experiences, and I am determined to use both to create meaningful change in the world.
