Hello, I am a student going to Arizona State University who is currently enrolled as a freshman. I am currently working towards a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and I also intend to get a master's afterwards. I am specifically interested in the transportation branch of civil engineering. Once I acquire my master's, I have the ambition to remain in school to get a degree in urban planning, because I want to use both degrees to make safer and better cities.
I have never ridden on a bicycle outside of my childhood home in a suburb in West Phoenix, so I have never personally experienced what it's like to ride a bike in a bike lane. However, I still know that most bike lanes throughout the United States are very unsafe to use. I couldn't imagine having to ride a bike a few feet away from incredibly heavy cars going 45mph. I also know that people are not used to looking out for people riding bikes. Most of the time, people will not realize that there is someone in their path because they don't recognize a car in front of them.
I'm going to school to get the opportunity to make cities safer in every way possible. I want to make sure people feel safe getting around in any mode of transportation they wish to use. I want to provide everyone with all options of transportation in a reasonable way. I want to make cities better places to live. Of course, that won't be simple, and it will definitely take several years and even decades to make significant and observable changes to our cities. But I want to be a part of the wave that starts the shift towards cities built for people, not cars.
When it comes to redesigning our roads and cities, everything starts with local communities. Each city, each town, and each road requires a case-by-case inspection when being considered for redevelopment. A road in Downtown Phoenix could benefit from having a protected bike lane installed. A town in Gilbert could benefit from becoming a part of the Valley Metro bus lines. A city within Phoenix could benefit from a tram line extension or even a new system.
There are many ways to analyze the transportation issues of a community, but it takes a lot of research, data, and dedication to truly improve the quality of life for everyone. That's what I want to do for society, and I could use all the help I can get.
