Since I was in eighth grade, I have struggled to feel safe being myself. As an LGBTQ student, I have experienced bullying that made school hallways feel isolating rather than welcoming. The words and stares followed me, quietly telling me that I was different in a way that was not accepted. Over time, this affected my confidence and sense of belonging. However, when I found theater, I found more than a hobby. I found a safe space where I could breathe, express myself, and finally feel seen.
Theater gave me a place where individuality was not just accepted but celebrated. Onstage and in rehearsal rooms, my differences were what made me strong. Instead of being judged for who I was, I was encouraged to explore characters, emotions, and stories that reflected the complexity of real people. Theater allowed me to be someone else for while. To disappear from the real world and create a fantasy world of my own. For the first time, I felt that my voice mattered. Theater allowed me to step into someone else’s shoes while also learning how to stand more confidently in my own.
Through theater, I have also learned resilience. I learned how to take criticism constructively, how to recover from mistakes, and how to keep going even when fear tried to hold me back. I learned that the only thing holding me back from being my true self was fear. That none of the things I beat myself up for really mattered at all. These lessons have extended far beyond the stage. Theater helped me rebuild my confidence and gave me the courage to believe that my experiences, including the difficult ones, have value and can always be learning experiences.
Looking toward the future, I want to continue pursuing theater because it has shaped who I am and who I hope to become. I want to be part of telling stories that foster understanding, representation, and connection, especially for people who feel unheard or unseen like me. Theater saved a space for me when I needed it the most, and I hope to one day help create that same safe space for others. I want to give back to the art that saved my life, and I hope that it can do the same for others. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue that journey and allow me to grow both artistically and personally through the art form that helped me find my voice.
