Growing up with parents who are both a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I was a firsthand witness to changes in how our laws affected my family, and subsequently, I saw how other countries' laws affected the viewpoints of everyone I came in contact with. I was very young when I immersed myself in politics, and shortly thereafter, I found myself fascinated by how other countries had different cultures, overarching stigmas, and traditions. People just like me and my community exist under completely different political climates.
I always desired to go into politics, but the idea of staying in the same country and never experiencing someone else's world always left me wanting more. I finally decided to go international for my schooling two years ago. I want to immerse myself in a different culture and see how their worldviews can change mine. My passion for international travel, in foreign countries and languages, stems solely from curiosity about how others think, and what led them to their opinions.
Through social media, I found small bits of others' lives. Small clips that are often clouded with stigmas and biases. I want to visit and learn about others through my own eyes, so I can have a clear opinion of the world around me.
Furthermore, my main goal in life is to learn. I hope to never stop being a student, a student of ideas that I may never understand. I want to always open myself up to the opportunity to learn about ideas and concepts, and I believe that through travel, I can accomplish this goal. I've committed to going to school in England for my bachelor's, and hopefully, my master's will be done in another country. During my schooling, I plan on traveling throughout Europe at first, and then, when I can, I'll go to Asia or South Africa. Even if just for a short holiday, I want to speak to locals, see how they live, and what they think. Everyone's lives are just as full of complex narratives as mine, and the opportunity to see the complexity of those who grew up in situations other than mine is exhilarating. I want to make a difference, and this can only be accomplished through improving my outlook and expanding my worldview. The world is vast beyond the bubble I exist in within my suburban town, and there is no better way to learn about the world I live in, than exploring, learning, and accepting.
