My name is Ava Luft, and I am a student at South Allegheny High School who is passionate about leadership, service, academics, and athletics. I am a member of the National Honor Society and work hard to maintain strong academic performance while staying involved in activities that allow me to grow and contribute to my school community.
I am an active member of the South Allegheny Student Led Innovation Team where I participate in Remake Learning initiatives that focus on creativity, problem solving, and giving students a voice in shaping learning experiences. I am also involved in the South Allegheny Kindness Campaign where I help organize projects that promote compassion, inclusion, and a positive school culture.
Volleyball has been an important part of my life and has taught me teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. The sport has helped shape who I am both on and off the court. Serving as captain for both my high school team and club teams taught me about leadership, positivity, and how to be someone other's can rely on both on and off the court.
One of my biggest goals is to be the first person in my family to attend college. I hope to continue playing volleyball at the collegiate level while earning a degree in biology. My goal is to work with children and support their emotional development so they feel seen, supported, and valued. Through my education and experiences, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

The impact I want to make begins with helping people feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Throughout my life, I have learned that small acts of kindness, encouragement, and service can have a lasting impact on someone's future. Because of my own experiences, I want to use my education not only to build a successful career but also to create opportunities for others and strengthen the communities around me.
One of the people who inspires me most is my mother. No matter what challenges our family faced, she continued to work hard and encouraged me to never give up on my goals. Watching her persevere through difficult circumstances taught me resilience, determination, and compassion. My teachers, coaches, and mentors have also inspired me by believing in me when I needed support the most. Their encouragement has motivated me to become someone who helps others in the same way.
As someone who experienced homelessness during high school, I understand what it feels like to face uncertainty and obstacles that can make the future seem overwhelming. Those experiences have shaped my desire to help others who may be struggling and to show them that their circumstances do not define their potential.
At my high school, I feel I have made an impact through my four year involvement in the Kindness Campaign, where I helped to start the group as well as serve as president. Through this organization, I have helped organize activities that promote inclusion, positivity, and support for students throughout our school community. Whether it is welcoming new students, recognizing acts of kindness, supporting school-wide initiatives, or creating opportunities for students to connect with one another, I have seen firsthand how a positive school culture can make a difference in someone's life. As a student ambassador, I have also helped new students transition into our school by making them feel welcomed and connected, knowing how important a sense of belonging can be. My home school district has a very transitional population of students in middle to lower socio-economic stability which leads to uncertainty when entering a new school district, some their third or fourth district by middle school.
As I pursue a degree in biology, I hope to use my education to improve the lives of others through science, healthcare, and/or environmental research. I am especially interested in finding ways to address challenges that affect underserved communities. Whether that means contributing to medical research, promoting public health initiatives, or supporting environmental sustainability efforts, I want my work to create meaningful and lasting change.
I also plan to continue mentoring and supporting young people. One day, I hope to return to communities like my own and volunteer with youth programs, school organizations, and mentorship initiatives. I want students facing difficult circumstances to see someone who understands their struggles and can encourage them to keep pursuing their goals. I would also like to help organize service projects, community outreach programs, and initiatives that bring people together to solve local challenges.
My vision for the future is a community where every student feels supported, valued, and capable of achieving success. I want to help create opportunities for others just as opportunities were created for me. Through leadership, service, and a career dedicated to improving lives, I hope to leave a positive impact on my community and inspire others to do the same. The change I am determined to create is one where kindness, opportunity, and hope help build a brighter future for everyone.

Throughout my life, I have learned that challenges do not define a person but how they respond to those challenges does. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are motivated and committed to their goals deserve opportunities such as scholarships and grants because they often work just as hard, if not harder, to achieve success despite obstacles beyond their control. Financial support can provide access to opportunities that allow students to reach their full potential and create a better future for themselves and their communities.
One of the biggest challenges I have faced is experiencing homelessness during my high school years. There were times when uncertainty and instability made it difficult to focus on school and my future. However, I refused to let my circumstances determine the outcome of my life. Instead, I used those experiences as motivation to work harder, stay focused on my goals, and appreciate every opportunity that came my way.
Despite these challenges, I have maintained straight A's while taking on numerous leadership roles and extracurricular activities. I am the President of the Kindness Campaign, a member of the National Honor Society, a Student-Led Innovation Team member, and a student ambassador who helps welcome new students to South Allegheny. I am also a varsity volleyball player and have been fortunate to earn recognition through the our local Interscholastic Athletic League and multiple college opportunities, including the chance to continue my volleyball career at Bethany College.
Through these experiences, I have learned the importance of leadership, empathy, perseverance, and service to others. Helping new students feel welcomed, supporting my peers, and leading initiatives that promote kindness have shown me that even small actions can make a significant difference in someone's life. My experiences have inspired me to pursue a degree in biology, where I hope to deepen my understanding of the natural world and prepare for a career that allows me to make meaningful contributions to science, healthcare, or environmental research.
As a first-generation college student, I know that higher education will open doors not only for me but for future generations of my family. Receiving this grant would help ease the financial burden of college expenses and allow me to focus on my studies, personal growth, and preparation for a successful future.
I am proud of what I have accomplished despite the obstacles I have faced, but I know my journey is only beginning. This grant would be an investment in my education, my future, and my commitment to making a positive impact on the world around me. I am determined to continue working hard, giving back to my community, and proving that perseverance and dedication can overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
