My Idaho community fosters the importance of nature. My favorite activities have consistently been those that have taken place in nature, including hiking in the foothills, camping, and whitewater rafting down the Salmon River. Because of this, I understand the importance of sustainability and why it's crucial to protect our environment. In today's world, the challenge of ensuring a sustainable and environmentally sound future for humankind is more pressing than ever. With the threat of climate change increasing every day, the transition to renewable energy sources has become imperative, however, it is necessary for humankind to recognize the role that traditional energy sources play to achieve the demand for energy globally. In order to achieve sustainability, it's essential to utilize both renewable and traditional energy sources in a balanced, practical manner. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power offer immense potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change, however, society can not just simply switch to these resources at the snap of a finger. Traditional sources of energy such as coal, oil, and natural gases dominate global energy markets. These fossil fuels, while inexpensive, cannot be renewed and pose significant environmental and health risks. To ensure a sustainable, environmentally sound future, it's crucial to implement measures and policies that reduce the environmental impact of traditional energy sources while gradually phasing them out in favor of renewables. The only way to ensure this future for humankind is by taking a gradual approach, appealing to environmentalists and non-renewable energy companies who dominate the field. To take a step in the right direction, legislation and global measures must be implemented to create a chain reaction of positive energy influence and create change on a larger scale. One example that affects me and my community is the implementation of an Amtrak rail service between Boise Idaho and other surrounding areas. The Idaho Transportation Department was responsible for applying for a grant to install the rail service, but they failed to do so. This rail service would provide easy, affordable access to transportation for many locals and decrease the dependence on cars to travel from Boise to nearby areas. Even though the Amtrak rail system uses diesel, it's significantly more energy efficient than cars alone. Implementing the Amtrak rail system would make transportation more accessible for locals and conserve energy. Although traditional fuel sources cannot be phased out completely yet, they serve as a temporary solution to meet society's energy demands until we can successfully utilize renewables to their full potential. The Amtrak rail system is a perfect example of how communities can take a step in the right direction and decrease energy consumption while still meeting people's needs. In conclusion, achieving sustainable and environmentally sound energy solutions for humanity requires a multifaceted approach that leverages the strengths of both renewable and traditional energy sources. By fostering collaboration between environmentalists and non-renewable energy companies, implementing effective legislation, and prioritizing global cooperation, we can pave the way towards a future where non-renewables are no longer needed and renewable sources power our world in a sustainable and environmentally-sound way.
