My favorite song on brat is "Rewind". The song portrays the almost universal experience that women and men around the world have as they grow up and start to battle with constant insecurity and ridicule from society as well as the stresses of growing up. Charli xcx claims "I used to never feel embarrassed" and "I hate these doubts that keep running through my mind" which particularly stuck out to me because I was such a carefree child and many people described me as a social butterfly. I used to talk to anyone about anything without a care in the world but as I have gotten older I have become very shy and reserved due to criticism and societal expectations. I often have trouble with public speaking and even holding regular conversations due to embarrassment, doubts, and social anxiety which have all come about in recent years. Additionally the stresses of growing up including college applications, imposter syndrome, AP course loads, studying for the SAT and more have completely changed the minds of teens like myself from carefree to filled with self-doubt and riddled with guilt of not working hard enough. In this song, Charli also mentions "I just wanna rewind" and "recently I've been thinking 'bout a way simpler time". This brings attention to many teens' wishes to "rewind" back to simpler times when they didn't have to worry about anything besides monsters under their beds. Although other songs on brat including "apple" and "360" may be catchier than "rewind" it remains my favorite song on the album due to its relatable and nostalgic sentiment.
