    Collette Mahmood Scholarship for Women
As a first-generation immigrant, I grew up with a deep appreciation for the sacrifices my parents made to give me a better life. My father, raised in Romania, and my mother, from Greece, both grew up in severe poverty. Their journey from challenging backgrounds in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean to building a life in New York taught me the value of perseverance and resilience. They instilled in me a strong sense of purpose, but they also carried the weight of cultural expectations about success and stability. For many in our community, the traditional route of becoming a doctor is seen as a reliable way to secure a stable future. But as I began to explore my own interests, I realized I wanted something more: to specialize in blood cancer research, an unconventional path that both challenged societal norms and carried an uncertain future. Choosing to pursue medical research surprised my family and community. They were understandably concerned about the practicalities of a career where outcomes are uncertain and progress can take years. My parents, who had worked so hard to establish stability, questioned why I would take on an unpredictable path. But for me, this decision was about more than stability; it was about honoring their sacrifices by pursuing my passion and making a meaningful impact in healthcare. I had witnessed the profound effect of illness on families, including my own, and I wanted to contribute to advancements that could save lives. Navigating this path hasn’t been easy. As a college student, I balance academics with financial pressures and family responsibilities, often feeling the weight of my decision. But rather than seeing these challenges as setbacks, I view them as an opportunity to redefine success in my own terms and show younger immigrants, like my siblings and others in our community, that we can pursue dreams beyond traditional expectations. Moments like these—when I’m pulled between my family’s support and my own ambitions—remind me why I chose this path and reinforce my determination to succeed. This journey has not only strengthened my resilience but has also influenced those around me. My friends, who were initially skeptical, have come to see the importance of following personal passions, even when the path is unconventional. My younger siblings have gained a broader perspective on what they can achieve, inspired to dream beyond familiar boundaries. Through this experience, I’ve learned that growth and innovation often require stepping outside of comfort zones. This lesson has deepened my commitment to trailblazing a path in the medical field, where I hope to both contribute to life-saving cancer research and advocate for greater healthcare access. My goal is to create a legacy that reflects both my heritage and my commitment to impacting the world in a meaningful way, bridging the values my parents passed down with a vision of change and empowerment for future generations. I hope to improve access to critical treatments, especially in underrepresented communities, and inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue their own bold paths. Ultimately, these experiences have shaped me into someone who values both perseverance and innovation, and who believes in challenging norms to create lasting change. I am more motivated than ever to continue on this path, embodying the spirit of a trailblazer and breaking boundaries in ways that inspire others to do the same.

Growing up, I was always in awe of healthcare professionals and their ability to bring hope and healing. Yet it was my mother’s battle with stage three cancer that truly showed me what it means to fight illness with resilience, patience, and support. Her medical team became my inspiration, and from that experience, I found my purpose: to not only become a doctor but to specialize in blood cancer treatment. Witnessing how cancer impacts patients and families strengthened my commitment to oncology, and despite my own challenges, I am determined to make this goal a reality. As a first-year college student, balancing my studies, finances, and my mother’s health needs has been difficult, but I believe these obstacles are shaping me into a stronger, more compassionate future physician. Managing these challenges while focusing on my education has taught me the importance of resilience and empathy. I know that in the medical field, these qualities will be essential not only for providing care but for understanding each patient’s unique journey. My goal is to become a hematology specialist, particularly focusing on blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. Recently, I was invited to join a four-year study on how viruses cause cancer, a groundbreaking area that holds the potential to revolutionize cancer treatments. This research will give me hands-on experience with techniques like DNA mutagenesis and qRT-PCR, preparing me to contribute to innovative, targeted therapies that could improve survival rates and quality of life for those facing blood cancers. Understanding the science behind these illnesses at a molecular level is crucial to developing solutions that go beyond temporary relief, aiming instead for long-term hope and recovery. In addition to clinical work, I am committed to advocating for greater access to healthcare in underserved communities. Having witnessed firsthand the challenges that financial strain can impose on a family’s healthcare journey, I want to ensure that medical support is accessible to all, regardless of background. By leading outreach initiatives and educational programs in the future, I hope to empower patients and their families with knowledge that promotes preventive care and reduces disparities in healthcare. Ultimately, I am driven to bring compassion, innovation, and advocacy to medicine. My goal is not only to treat illnesses but to provide a sense of understanding and security to each patient I encounter. I hope to make a lasting impact by contributing to cancer research, providing empathetic care, and building a legacy of hope for others navigating similar struggles. This scholarship would play a vital role in helping me reach this future, one where I can give back and create meaningful change in the field of oncology and beyond.
