WinnerOftentimes the architecture seen around us, the storage units, office buildings, and stores, are created for no other purpose than profit. While some of these structures can be impressive, they aren't what came to mind when I thought about my career in architecture. To me, architecture is not simply about designing buildings, it is about designing a space of belonging. I believe that every person deserves a place that was intentionally created with them in mind, a place where they feel safe, valued, and welcomed. By studying architecture I hope to gain the knowledge and skills to create spaces that strengthen communities and remind people that they truly matter.
Growing up, I realized that not every child had access to environments that encourage learning, innovation, or even a sense of security. Many children often leave their schools to return to neighborhoods or homes where there are a few places that encourage them, not just academically but creatively. I aim to design community centers and schools that are more than just buildings. I envision vibrant spaces filled with natural light, colorful walls, and fun furniture. Places where children can learn new hobbies, build friendships, and find guidance. I want to make spaces that don't simply occupy land, but create opportunities for growth, connection, and hope.
In addition, I want to make spaces that provide services to children that they may not have at home. Libraries, computer labs, and career exploration centers that allow for children to get aid with homework, studying, and collaborative workspaces. Too often children and teens can get stuck in a space designed for someone else, I want to be able to change that. I want to make spaces designated to their interests, challenges, and aspirations so they can experience different paths and find a place where they feel they belong.
What excites me the most about architecture is the ability to shape people's everyday lives, the ability to create an impact on someone's day. A building can bring forth communication long before someone speaks inside of it. Bright colors have the ability to inspire imagination, large windows can create feelings of joy and comfort, and more accessible and open layouts have the ability to simply encourage conversation. Every design decision, no matter how small, or big, has the potential to influence how someone experiences a moment in their life. I want my work to reflect the belief that good design isn't solely by appearance but by how it improves the lives of people who use it.
In the end, I do not aspire to be remembered for designing the tallest building or the most recognizable landmark. Instead, I hope to make spaces where children discover their potential, where families build connections, and where friends create memories. If I am able to truly help even one person, or one community, then I will have truly used my career to its potential. I believe one of the greatest things an architect can do is not simply create a building, but create opportunities for the communities it serves.
