My name is Autumn Harrison, and I’m an undergraduate student majoring in business management. I’m also a proud U.S. veteran, a single mother to a beautiful little boy, and someone who refuses to give up, no matter how many times life has tried to knock me down. For me, education isn’t just a path to a degree, it’s a symbol of hope, growth, and a better future for my family. When I left the military, I found myself starting from scratch. I had discipline and determination, but I lacked direction. I knew I wanted to build a life that offered both stability and purpose. I chose business management because I believe in leadership with heart, and I want to use my voice to make an impact, not just in the workforce, but in the world around me. I’m especially drawn to marketing because of its ability to tell stories that connect people and inspire action. I’ve always believed that the right message, at the right time, can change everything. My ultimate goal is to work in the wine industry, where creativity, storytelling, and business all intersect. I want to help brands grow, build relationships with their communities, and elevate their presence through ethical, people-centered marketing. But before I can get there, I have to finish my degree, and that journey hasn’t been easy. As a single mother, every day is a delicate balance. I wake up early to get my son ready, attend classes, complete assignments, work part-time jobs, and somehow make it home in time to read him a bedtime story. There are days when I feel stretched thin, but my son is my reason for everything. He keeps me grounded and reminds me why I push forward. I want him to grow up seeing a mom who never gave up on her dreams, no matter how long the road was. Beyond my academic and career goals, I have always felt a calling to serve my community. Volunteering at the local food bank is something I do regularly, and it’s become a part of who I am. Whether it’s sorting canned goods, helping with food drives, or simply showing up with a smile, I believe small acts of kindness can create big change. I know what it feels like to need help, and I want to be someone others can count on, especially during hard times. Giving back reminds me of the strength found in community, and it helps me stay connected to the values that matter most. Receiving this scholarship would be a blessing beyond words. It would ease the financial strain of tuition, textbooks, and daily expenses. It would give me more time to focus on learning, interning, and preparing for the career I’ve worked so hard to pursue. But more than that, it would remind me that I’m not alone, that someone believes in my story and sees potential in my path. One of my biggest dreams is to someday mentor other veterans, women, and single parents who feel like the odds are stacked against them. I want to show them that it’s never too late to start over, to chase something meaningful, or to become the person you were always meant to be. With this scholarship, I won’t just be investing in myself, I’ll be paying it forward in every way I can. Thank you for considering my application. Your support would make a meaningful difference in my life, and I promise to carry it with gratitude and purpose every step of the way.

As a U.S. Air Force veteran, a single mother, and a first-generation college student in Oregon, my journey has been shaped by resilience, grit, and an unwavering desire to build a better life for myself and my son. I am currently pursuing a degree in Business Management with a concentration in digital marketing, and I plan to turn my passion for storytelling, branding, and strategy into a career that helps others grow, especially small businesses in underserved communities. My interest in digital marketing stems from its power to connect people. In today’s world, marketing is more than just advertising, it’s how brands build trust, how stories are told, and how businesses thrive. I’ve always been fascinated by how a strong message or a simple design can change the way people feel about a product or company. After years of working various jobs and navigating life as a veteran and single parent, I realized I wanted a career that used both my creativity and strategic thinking to create value and build meaningful connections. Digital marketing allows me to do just that. I’m especially drawn to content creation, social media strategy, and branding. I love analyzing how audiences engage with content and using that data to improve reach and engagement. I’ve started building my own portfolio by designing mock campaigns, experimenting with video content, and studying successful brand strategies. I plan to earn industry certifications in Google Analytics, SEO, and HubSpot to strengthen my technical knowledge while I continue to complete my degree. My long-term goal is to work in Oregon’s wine industry, where I can apply digital marketing to help local wineries expand their customer base, attract tourism, and tell authentic stories. Many small vineyards don’t have large marketing teams, but they have rich histories and quality products that deserve attention. I want to be the person who helps bring those stories to life online. Eventually, I hope to start a marketing consulting business that supports other women, veterans, and first-generation entrepreneurs. Receiving this scholarship would not only ease the financial strain of college, but it would also reinforce that my hard work is worth it. Every step I’ve taken, from serving in the military to late-night study sessions after putting my son to bed, has been toward building a future that is stable, fulfilling, and impactful. Digital marketing is the tool I’ve chosen to help me get there. This opportunity would allow me to continue pushing forward, to refine my skills, and to grow into a professional who not only understands marketing, but uses it to make a difference.

I am a U.S. Air Force veteran, a single mother, and a first-generation college student in Oregon. My story is one of resilience, transformation, and a deep desire to build something better, not just for myself, but for my son and for others who have been told their circumstances define their future. I grew up in a financially unstable household where college wasn’t a topic of conversation, let alone a real goal. My family did their best, but we often struggled to cover basic needs. I saw how lack of access to education and opportunity can hold people back for generations. That reality stayed with me, and it motivated me to find a way out. I joined the Air Force looking for stability, structure, and purpose. Serving my country taught me discipline, leadership, and resilience, but when I returned to civilian life, I quickly realized how difficult it is to translate those strengths into opportunity, especially without a college degree. When I became a mother, everything changed again. My son became my reason to keep pushing. I wanted to give him more than I had growing up, a stable home, a sense of security, and the example of a parent who didn’t give up when things got hard. As a single parent, I’ve had to navigate college, work, parenting, and life’s challenges with little help and limited resources. I’ve taken online classes during nap times, written papers late at night, and sat in lectures with my mind half on my son and half on my dreams. I won’t pretend it’s been easy, but I will say it’s been worth it. Today, I’m working toward a degree in Business Management, and I’m passionate about entering Oregon’s wine industry. It’s not just a career path, it’s a vision. I want to create a vineyard that reflects my values, community, sustainability, opportunity, and resilience. My dream is to one day own a winery that trains and hires single mothers, veterans, and first-generation students. I believe business can be more than profit, it can be a vehicle for social impact and healing. I want to build a space where people like me feel seen, supported, and empowered to dream bigger. This scholarship would make a real difference in my journey. It would ease the constant financial strain, allow me to dedicate more time to my education, and give me the momentum to keep moving forward. More than that, it would be a recognition of how far I’ve come, and how much farther I can go. I’m not just earning a degree, I’m breaking a cycle. I’m rewriting the story of my life and creating a new one for my son. I want him to grow up knowing that no matter where you start, you can still build the life you imagine. All it takes is vision, hard work, and a little help along the way. And that’s exactly what I plan to do, rise, lead, and give back.
    Neal Hartl Memorial Sales/Marketing Scholarship
Why I’m Pursuing a Career in Sales and Marketing For the past three years, I’ve been immersed in the wine industry, developing a deep appreciation for both the product and the people who make it. What began as a job quickly evolved into a true passion, one that has revealed my natural ability to connect with others through storytelling, sensory experience, and product knowledge. I discovered that I have a niche for describing wine and communicating its craftsmanship in a way that excites and educates customers. That passion is what first drew me to sales, and it’s what now fuels my ambition to build a long-term career in marketing and sales within the wine and hospitality industry. Returning to school to earn my bachelor’s degree in business is not just a step forward, it’s a leap of faith. As a single mother, I know how precious time and resources are, but I also understand the importance of setting a good example for my child. I want to show him that, with ambition and hard work, we can reach new heights, no matter the challenges. This degree will enable me to transition into management roles, where I can not only drive sales and marketing efforts but also mentor others who are passionate about hospitality. I believe that leadership in this industry must come from a place of creativity, empathy, and vision, qualities I bring to the table, and continue to develop every day. Marketing, to me, is more than just selling a product. It’s about storytelling, connection, and crafting experiences that people remember. In the wine industry, that story begins with the soil and ends in the glass. Every varietal has a journey, and I find deep satisfaction in helping customers understand and appreciate that journey. Whether it’s hosting a tasting, designing promotional materials, or developing a new strategy for product placement, I find joy in every opportunity to blend creativity with strategy. My goal is to create marketing campaigns that not only boost sales but also honor the authenticity and craftsmanship of the wines we represent. Long term, I aspire to teach hospitality and marketing within the wine industry. I want to help shape the next generation of professionals by sharing both practical knowledge and real-world experiences. My dream is to inspire others the way I was once inspired, to see wine not just as a product, but as an experience that brings people together. This scholarship would mean the world to me. It represents more than financial assistance, it’s recognition of the hard work I’ve put into building my future, and of the dreams I’m chasing not just for myself, but for my son. I’m committed to my education, and my career, and to making an impact in the wine and hospitality industry through sales, marketing, and mentorship. Thank you for considering my application, and for supporting students like me who are determined to grow, lead, and give back.

A Journey of Growth and Purpose My name is Autumn Harrison, I am 40 years old, a veteran, a single mother, and a business management student working toward a career in the wine industry. My path to higher education has been shaped by many challenges and life lessons that have strengthened my determination to create a better future for myself, my son, and my community. Growing up in an abusive, low-income household, I experienced firsthand the struggles that come with instability and limited resources. These experiences taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of hard work. I learned early that success is not guaranteed but earned through perseverance and a commitment to growth. Despite the obstacles, I refused to let my circumstances define me. Instead, they fueled my ambition to seek opportunities for change. Joining the military was a pivotal moment in my life. The structure, discipline, and sense of purpose I found there helped me develop confidence and leadership skills. These qualities continue to guide me as I balance the responsibilities of parenting, working, and pursuing my degree at 40. Going back to school is not just about advancing my career; it’s a commitment to lifelong learning and a chance to set a positive example for my son. My decision to major in business management reflects my passion for leadership and creating positive environments. I am particularly interested in the wine industry, a field I am eager to enter, where I can contribute to fostering inclusive workplaces that value diversity, balance, and respect. Through my education, I hope to develop the skills needed to lead with integrity, compassion, and vision. Community service has always been important to me, shaped by my own experiences and the desire to give back. I have volunteered at food banks, housing assistance programs, and mentorship initiatives for single mothers and those facing hardship. These opportunities have deepened my understanding of the importance of support systems and have inspired me to use my education to create meaningful change beyond my personal goals. This scholarship would be an invaluable resource as I manage the financial pressures of school, work, and single motherhood. It would allow me to dedicate more time and energy to my studies and community involvement, reducing the stress that comes with balancing these demands. Most importantly, it would provide encouragement and recognition that my efforts toward personal growth and community impact are valued. Looking ahead, I plan to use my education to build a career that not only fulfills me professionally but also empowers others. I want to be a leader who helps shape workplaces where people feel supported and motivated to succeed. I also aim to continue volunteering and mentoring, helping individuals facing challenges similar to those I have overcome. At this stage in my life, pursuing higher education is about more than a degree, it’s about growth, resilience, and making a tangible difference. I am committed to using what I learn to positively impact my community and industry, showing others that with determination and support, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Thank you for considering my application. This scholarship would significantly help me achieve my goals and continue contributing to a better future for those around me.

For Such a Time as This My name is Autumn Harrison, and I’m a veteran, a single mom, and a business management student working toward a salaried position in the wine industry. My days are full, between work, school, and raising my son, but I believe every step of this journey is part of God’s plan for me, for such a time as this. I come from an abusive, low-income childhood, where survival was often the only goal. I didn’t always have the words to describe my pain or my hopes, but I knew deep inside I wanted a different life. I wanted safety, stability, and a future that wasn’t defined by fear. Joining the military gave me the discipline, strength, and confidence to start rebuilding that future, and now I’m carrying that same drive through college and motherhood. Choosing business management as my major wasn’t just about a job, it’s about becoming a leader who can make a difference. I want to work in the wine industry, which I know can be tough and competitive, and bring a culture of compassion and support to the workplace. My faith teaches me that leadership is about serving others with integrity and kindness, and that’s how I want to lead, in my career, my community, and at home with my son. Going to a Baptist college has made a big difference in how I see my education. It’s not just about learning skills, it’s about growing in faith and understanding why my work matters beyond just the paycheck. I want to be a witness through how I live and lead, showing that faith and professionalism go hand in hand. This scholarship would help me focus more on my studies and less on the financial pressure that comes with balancing school, work, and parenting. Being a single mom isn’t easy, and sometimes it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day. But I want my son to see that with God’s help, we can overcome even the hardest challenges. I want him to grow up knowing that no matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, you can build a better future. That’s what I’m doing now, working hard, keeping my grades up, and striving to be a role model for him and for other women like me. This scholarship would mean more than just money, it would be a sign of support and encouragement when I need it most. It would remind me that I’m not alone in this journey and that my community believes in what I’m working toward. With this help, I can keep pushing forward, not just for myself, but for my son and for others who need to see what’s possible. Thank you for considering me. I believe God placed me on this path for such a time as this, and I’m ready to step into that calling with faith, strength, and determination.
    Mark Green Memorial Scholarship
My name is Autumn Harrison, and I’m a veteran, a single mom, and a full-time business management student working toward a salaried position in the wine industry. On paper, I may not look like the “traditional” college student, but that’s exactly why I’m a strong candidate for this scholarship. I’ve had to fight for every step forward, and I’ve learned to turn challenges into fuel for growth. I come from an abusive, low-income childhood where survival often came before anything else. There were times when the weight of fear and instability made it hard to imagine a brighter future. But even in the darkest moments, I knew I wanted something more, something stable, safe, and empowering. That inner drive is what carried me through the military, into motherhood, and now into higher education. I joined the military to create a path out, to build something better for myself and, eventually, for the child I would raise on my own. Serving taught me discipline, leadership, and how to stay focused in the face of adversity. Those lessons carried into motherhood and now into my education. Being a single mom in college isn’t easy. There are nights when I’m studying with one hand and comforting my son with the other. But I do it because I want him to see what’s possible. I want him to know that our past doesn’t define us, our perseverance does. No matter what life throws at me, I keep striving. I chose business management because I want to lead. Specifically, I want to make a long-term impact in the wine industry, a field where leadership often lacks diversity and work-life balance is rarely talked about. My goal is to step into a leadership role where I can create more inclusive, compassionate, and forward-thinking workplace cultures. I believe in the power of people, and I want to help build organizations that value employee wellness, equity, and mentorship. Outside of school and work, I’m passionate about giving back. I’ve volunteered with food banks, transitional housing programs, and youth mentorship groups, especially supporting single mothers and underserved communities. I know what it’s like to feel invisible and overwhelmed, and I never want anyone else to feel that way if I can help. Even when I don’t have much to give financially, I give my time, my energy, and my story, because sometimes knowing someone else has made it through is enough to keep going. I believe I’m a strong candidate for this scholarship because I bring more than ambition, I bring real-world perspective, grit, and heart. I don’t just want to succeed for myself, I want to clear the path for others. I want to mentor women entering male-dominated industries. I want to show other student parents that their dreams are still valid. I want to take the knowledge I gain and use it to create positive change, not just in my workplace, but in my community. This scholarship would help relieve some of the financial pressure I carry while juggling school, parenting, and part-time work. More importantly, it would be a vote of confidence in someone who doesn’t take opportunity for granted. Every step I take forward is one I plan to turn around and offer to someone else. I may not have taken the traditional route to college, but I bring a unique perspective, strong values, and a deep desire to make a difference. I’m not just working toward a degree. I’m building a future, for my son, for myself, and for others like us who are ready to rise.
    TRAM Purple Phoenix Scholarship
My Path to Breaking Cycles and Building Safer Futures I didn’t grow up hearing the words "intimate partner violence," but I saw it. I saw the fear behind quiet voices, the way someone would flinch when a phone buzzed too late, or how hard it was to breathe when the air felt heavy with tension. As a child, I didn’t have the language for what I witnessed. As an adult, and especially as a veteran and a mother, I do. What I’ve come to believe is this: intimate partner violence thrives in silence, shame, and lack of awareness. That’s why I believe education, open, honest, and empowering, is one of the most effective ways we can reduce IPV. It doesn’t just give people knowledge. It gives them the tools to recognize red flags, the courage to act, and the power to imagine something better. As a single mom, my son is my biggest motivation. I want him to grow up knowing what respect, boundaries, and emotional safety look like. I want him to have words for the things I didn’t, and the confidence to never settle for anything less than mutual love and respect. That starts with what I model, but it extends into what he learns in school and sees in the world around him. That’s where education matters most. Teaching students about healthy relationships and consent can prevent abuse before it ever begins. It changes the way people see themselves and others. It opens doors for conversations that too many people are afraid to have. And it helps those who are living in silence realize they’re not alone, and that there is a way out. As a veteran, I’ve seen how discipline, leadership, and resilience can change lives. But I’ve also seen how trauma, especially unspoken or misunderstood, can linger. That’s why I’m pursuing a degree in business management, not only to provide stability for my family, but to put myself in a position where I can make change from the inside out. I’m working to secure a salaried role in the wine industry, and my goal is to eventually step into a leadership position where I can influence company culture, create supportive environments, and help develop initiatives that support employee wellness, including those who may be silently experiencing IPV. Too often, abuse doesn’t stop at home, it follows people to work through stress, absenteeism, and fear. I want to be the kind of leader who sees people as whole humans and creates space for both safety and success. Long-term, I also hope to mentor young women, especially those from single-parent or military backgrounds, to help them build confidence, independence, and financial stability. Education changed my life path, and I want to pay that forward in a way that multiplies impact across families and communities. This scholarship would be more than financial help, it would be an investment in a future built on healing, advocacy, and action. I don’t just want to rise, I want to bring others with me. By using my education, my experiences, and my voice, I hope to break cycles, challenge stigma, and help build a world where fewer people have to learn about IPV the hard way, like I did. Because the little girl I once was didn’t have the words, but the woman I am now does. And she plans to use them.
    Let Your Light Shine Scholarship
Let Your Light Shine Scholarship Shining My Light: Creating a Legacy Through Business and Service I believe a true legacy isn’t just about personal success, but the impact you have on others and the way you inspire them to reach their full potential. My ambition is to create a legacy that not only changes my life but also creates opportunities for others to grow, thrive, and overcome challenges. I plan to do this by creating a business that embodies my values of empowerment, community, and resilience—serving others and giving back in meaningful ways. My drive to build this legacy comes from my own experiences and the obstacles I’ve overcome. As a single mom and a veteran, I’ve faced adversity. Struggling with anxiety, PTSD, and raising a son while managing my mental health, I’ve experienced hardships firsthand. These struggles, however, have fueled my passion not only to transform my life but also to help others rise above their circumstances. I’ve seen how difficult it can be to overcome challenges, but I’ve also seen how determination, hard work, and the right support can change lives. This understanding forms the foundation of the business I want to create. The business I hope to create one day will focus on mental health support and personal development. Having faced my struggles with anxiety and depression, I understand how critical mental health is to personal and professional success. My goal is to create a business model offering resources, education, and support to individuals dealing with their mental health challenges. This could include therapy services, mentorship, coaching, and self-care programs to empower individuals to take control of their mental well-being. I also want to provide training to companies, helping them build workplace cultures that prioritize mental health and wellness, ensuring employees feel supported and valued. What drives me to create this business is my deep passion for helping others. I’ve always believed that if you can lift others, you create a ripple effect of positive change. I want my business to be a platform for individuals to find support and guidance, regardless of the obstacles they face. Shining my light means being a source of encouragement, strength, and resilience for those who may be struggling. Through empathy and shared experiences, we can grow together. In building this business, I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams with the same ambition and perseverance I’ve applied to my own life. My legacy teaches others that no matter where you start, you can shape your future and create meaningful change. I envision myself as a mentor and leader, guiding others to tap into their potential, just as I am doing now as I pursue my business degree. Ultimately, my legacy will not just be the business I build but the lives I touch along the way. I want to shine my light by leading with empathy, integrity, and purpose. I want to be a beacon for others who may feel lost, showing them that with the right support and mindset, anything is possible. By creating a business that empowers others, I will leave behind a legacy of impact, service, and hope. Receiving the Let Your Light Shine Scholarship would be an honor and a significant step toward building my business and creating a lasting legacy. This scholarship would provide the financial support I need to continue my education, pursue my dreams, and shine my light in the world in a way that inspires others to do the same.
    WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship Greatest Achievement: Turning Setbacks into Opportunities When I reflect on my greatest achievement to date, it’s not one single moment or event. It’s the journey I’ve undertaken to overcome challenges, persevere through adversity, and embrace the opportunity to build a better future for myself and my son. My greatest achievement, in my eyes, is the decision I made to return to school at 40 years old, despite the many obstacles I’ve faced—personal, financial, and emotional. This decision wasn’t just about earning a degree; it was about proving to myself and my son that ambition and perseverance can transform even the toughest of circumstances into opportunities for growth. The road leading to this achievement was far from easy. I’ve faced many challenges in my life, including anxiety, PTSD from my military service, domestic abuse, and the financial hardships that come with being a single parent. In December, just two weeks before Christmas, I was laid off from my job—a moment that shook me to my core. As a single mom, with a 16-year-old son depending on me, it felt like everything I had worked for was suddenly slipping away. However, instead of allowing that setback to define me, I chose to redefine it. The loss of my job became a turning point. It forced me to re-evaluate what I truly wanted in life. I realized that I wasn’t just looking for another job; I was searching for a purpose, a career, a chance to create something meaningful for myself and my son. That’s when I made the decision to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I also knew it was the key to achieving a life of stability and opportunity. This decision has been my greatest achievement because it symbolizes my commitment to change, growth, and a future that I can control. Going back to school as a 40-year-old, full-time mom, and a single parent has tested my limits in every way possible. There have been sleepless nights spent studying, moments of self-doubt, and constant juggling between academics, home life, and personal struggles. But every challenge has also taught me something invaluable about myself. I’ve learned that perseverance is not just about pushing through difficult times; it’s about finding the strength to keep going, even when the road ahead feels uncertain. I’ve learned that my past, while filled with hardship, doesn’t define me—it empowers me. And most importantly, I’ve learned that success is not measured by how many times you fall, but by how many times you rise. This journey has ignited a deep sense of ambition in me. I’m not just striving to finish my degree; I’m striving to build a career that allows me to lead, innovate, and help others. I’m pursuing my degree with the goal of using my business education to create opportunities, whether that’s through leadership positions, entrepreneurship, or mentoring others who are facing their own challenges. My future aspirations are rooted in the belief that education is the key to breaking cycles—whether that’s breaking cycles of poverty, trauma, or limiting beliefs. Looking forward, I hope to achieve a future where I not only provide for my son but also inspire him to chase his own dreams with confidence. I want to create a life of stability, purpose, and fulfillment, where I can give back to my community and make a lasting impact. I envision myself in a leadership role, where I can help others overcome their own barriers, just as I have. I want to show people who face adversity that it’s possible to rise above their circumstances and build a future filled with opportunity. Receiving the WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship would be a monumental step toward achieving these goals. The financial support would alleviate some of the burdens of school expenses, allowing me to focus more on my education and continue working toward my dream. It would be an investment not just in my future but in the future of my son, and in the hope that I can create a ripple effect of positive change, not just for my family but for others who need to see what’s possible when perseverance meets ambition. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and would be honored to be selected. It would be a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and the unwavering belief that no matter where you start, you can always achieve more.
    Mikey Taylor Memorial Scholarship
Mikey Taylor Memorial Scholarship A Journey of Resilience: How Mental Health Has Shaped My Beliefs, Relationships, and Career Aspirations Mental health has been an enduring theme in my life, influencing my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations in profound ways. Throughout my experiences with anxiety, PTSD from my time in the military, domestic abuse, and depression, I have come to understand that mental health is not just something to be managed but something that can inspire growth, empathy, and resilience. It’s a continuous journey—one that shapes my ambitions and strengthens my resolve to make a difference in the world. My mental health struggles began in childhood, but they intensified after my military service and in the years following the trauma of domestic abuse. I’ve spent most of my life navigating the challenges of anxiety and PTSD, each day trying to manage the weight of experiences that have often felt overwhelming. But it’s not just my struggles that have shaped me—my son, too, has inherited the challenges of mental health, and together, we have learned the power of resilience and healing. Through these hardships, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the importance of mental health—not only for myself but also for others. I’ve learned the value of compassion, patience, and self-awareness, all of which have shaped my beliefs about how we should approach mental health in our society. Mental health should never be stigmatized, but embraced as part of the human experience. Our struggles don’t define us; they give us the strength to rise, change, and inspire others. These experiences have also had a profound impact on my relationships. My battles with anxiety and depression taught me to lean on others, to ask for help, and to offer the same support in return. I now understand that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a source of strength that brings people closer together. It’s this realization that has helped me form stronger, more meaningful connections—whether with friends, mentors, or my son. Despite these challenges, my ambition has only grown stronger. I’m determined to turn my personal struggles into a source of strength, to use my experiences to guide me toward a fulfilling career that can make a difference. My goal is to earn a degree in Business so that I can not only create opportunities for myself but also offer support and guidance to others who may be navigating their own mental health struggles. I want to lead with empathy, providing both resources and mentorship to those in need. The Mikey Taylor Memorial Scholarship would significantly ease the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus on my studies, continue growing, and strive toward my career aspirations. I would be deeply grateful if selected for this award, as it would allow me to put more of my energy into becoming a leader in the field of business, with a focus on mental health awareness and support. It would help me make a lasting impact—not just for myself, but for my son and others who struggle silently with their own mental health challenges. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I can continue to turn my past struggles into a source of empowerment, striving to create a career and a life that makes a positive difference. I am determined to keep fighting, growing, and learning every day, and to show my son that we are stronger than our struggles.

    J. L. Lund Memorial Scholarship From Setback to Strength: How One Moment Changed Everything In December, just two weeks before Christmas, I was laid off from my job. Phoenix Opportunity Award
Phoenix Opportunity Award Rising First: What Being a First-Generation College Student Means to My Future Being a first-generation college student is more than a personal milestone it’s a powerful responsibility and a source of motivation that fuels every step I take. I’m not just earning a degree for myself. I’m opening a door that’s never been opened in my family before, and I intend to leave it wide open for the next generation—starting with my 16-year-old son. As a single veteran mom, my journey has been far from traditional. In December, just two weeks before Christmas, I was laid off from my job. That moment could have broken me, but instead, it became the spark that lit a new path forward. I looked at my life, my goals, and the example I wanted to set for my son and I decided to go back to school and pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business. Andrea N. Santore Scholarship
Andrea N. Santore Scholarship Why I Chose This Career Path and How a Degree Will Impact My Life Life has a way of testing our strength, often when we least expect it. In December—just two weeks before Christmas—I was laid off from my job. As a single veteran mom raising a 16-year-old son, the timing couldn’t have been worse. I had worked hard to create a stable life for my family, and in an instant, everything changed. Despite doing everything I could to find work, no doors were opening. It was then that I made one of the most important decisions of my life: to invest in myself by returning to school and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business. This choice wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. I realized I didn’t just want another job—I wanted a career. I wanted the kind of future that would not only provide long-term stability but also allow me to grow, lead, and maybe one day run my own business. At 40 years old, this decision marks a new beginning. It’s a declaration that setbacks don’t define us—our courage to rise after them does. This journey is about much more than me. It’s about showing my son, who’s watching my every step, that you can always start over and rebuild. I want him to see that challenges are not the end, but rather the beginning of something greater. That even in the hardest moments, we still have the power to choose growth, purpose, and perseverance. A degree in Business will equip me with critical skills in leadership, management, finance, and entrepreneurship. These are tools I will use to build a meaningful, sustainable future—for myself, my son, and others who may one day work beside me or be inspired by my path. Winning the Andrea N. Santore Scholarship would mean the world to us. For me, it would relieve some of the financial strain that comes with being a full-time student and provider. It would allow me to focus more on my education and less on how I’ll cover books, tuition, or basic needs. For my son, it would be living proof that hard work, perseverance, and faith in your future are recognized and rewarded. It would show him that people care and that support is out there for those who strive to better themselves. This scholarship would not only ease a burden—it would fuel a dream. And it would help me continue turning adversity into achievement, not just for myself, but for the young man I’m raising to believe in second chances and big goals.
    Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
Technology has always influenced our world. However, recently, artificial intelligence has captured my imagination because it addresses global issues and challenges. One of the most inspiring aspects of AI is its ability to enhance healthcare. AI-powered tools are helping doctors diagnose diseases more accurately and at earlier stages. For instance, AI can analyze medical images to detect cancer, sometimes even better than human radiologists. Additionally, AI-driven drug discovery accelerates the development of new treatments, bringing hope to patients suffering from conditions that were once thought incurable. These advancements not only save lives but also make healthcare more efficient and affordable. AI is a powerful tool that can help us solve many pressing challenges, and protecting the environment is no exception. Climate change is one of the most serious environmental issues today, but AI can be used to reduce its impact. AI-based systems are able to analyze large amounts of environmental data to predict natural disasters, optimize energy use, and reduce waste. Furthermore, AI-powered smart grids make managing renewable energy sources more effective. These features contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future. By helping us make smarter decisions, AI has the potential to preserve our planet for many years to come. One of the biggest issues facing our world today is how to make education more accessible. We see that AI has the ability to make education much more personal and tailored to each individual person. I think if we use AI to personalize learning, it could mean that more people succeed in school and potentially even more people who would not otherwise be able to afford school to go. The ability to help more people get their education will give more power to individuals and communities. AI has the potential to solve many global problems, including climate change and the eradication of diseases like cancer and malaria. But we must make sure the algorithms we use are not biased and that our workforce is prepared for the future. Winning this scholarship would change my life, easing the financial burden of my education and providing me with the resources and motivation to push forward. It would allow me to pursue my passion for technology and contribute to the development of AI solutions that improve people's lives. This opportunity would not only change my life, but it would help me make the world a better place.

    Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship
Autumn Harrison Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship My Favorite Charli XCX Song on Brat Charli XCX’s album Brat is a bold, exhilarating collection of hyper pop-infused bangers and emotionally raw moments, showcasing her evolution as an artist. Among all the standout tracks, my favorite song from the album is “360.” This track encapsulates everything I love about Charli XCX—her sharp lyricism, cutting-edge production, and unshakable confidence. I love “360” because of its infectious energy, and the reason I think it’s so great is the beat. The beat is very infectious, and it fits the hyper pop genre perfectly. There are pulsating synths and glitchy beats that match its theme of being at the center of attention. The Charli XCX song “360” is a celebration of status and influence, with lyrics reflecting Charli’s ability to be both self-aware and playful. It revolves around themes of exclusivity, fame, and being the ultimate “it-girl” in the music and fashion scene. Lines like “I’m 360, I’m all around” convey a sense of omnipresence and power, making it an anthem for anyone who wants to feel unstoppable. Charli delivers her lyrics with an effortless coolness, making every word feel like a declaration of dominance. I really love the song “360” off of Charli’s album “Brat.” What I like about this song most is that it embodies the true ethos of Charli XCX. Her artistic style has always pushed boundaries and boundaries in the pop music scene, and this song is no exception. It uses standard elements of the genre but somehow manages to twist them into something uniquely her own, which makes it my favorite song on Brat. It goes perfectly with the overarching themes of the album in that it explores her fame, identity, and the complexities of being an artist in the digital age. I find myself blasting it at parties or listening to it through headphones on my way to work to pump myself up. It’s no wonder “360” is a breakout song from the Brat album. With its pulsating energy, confident lyrics, and forward-thinking production, it embodies Charli XCX’s innovative artistry while simultaneously appealing to mainstream music fans. As a result, Charli is able to achieve even more success. “360” is a testament to Charli’s reputation as an industry trailblazer, proving once again that she stays ahead of the curve. Bear Fan Scholarship
A perfect end to The Bear Few shows capture the chaotic beauty of ambition, family, and personal growth quite like The Bear. From the very first episode, we watched Carmy Berzatto as he struggles to turn his late brother’s failing restaurant into something remarkable, all while battling his own demons. Alongside him, an ensemble of flawed yet lovable characters has carved out a space in our hearts, each on their own journey of self-discovery. As the series reaches its inevitable conclusion, the perfect ending would honor the raw emotion and authenticity that have made The Bear so special. As a fan, I’ve grown deeply invested in the world of Carmy, Sydney, Richie, and the rest of the crew. The show’s main character, Carmy, finally achieves his dream of getting a Michelin star for the restaurant. But it happens in a way that doesn't break him. Instead of becoming consumed by perfection, he learns to delegate, trust his team, and let go of the self-imposed pressure that has been tormenting him. It also wouldn’t surprise me to see him take a step back from the kitchen to mentor young chefs, realizing that his greatest legacy is not the restaurant itself, but the people he's helped along the way. In the final chapter of The Bear, Sydney will become Carmy's equal, not his apprentice, and ultimately be given full creative control of the restaurant. She will have battled self-doubt but emerged as a leader, proving to herself and the world that she’s got what it takes. She could stay at The Bear or, in a bold move, open her own place, carrying everything she's learned. Richie's development is one of the most compelling aspects of the series. From a hot-headed and aimless screw-up to a poised and confident front-of-house leader, his transformation is nothing short of inspiring. In my perfect ending, Richie finds lasting fulfillment in his role, not just as a maître d' but as someone who truly understands people and the importance of hospitality. I also think it would be wonderful if he rekindles his relationship with his daughter, becoming the father he always wished he could be. Richie finally realizes his worth and finds happiness in something bigger than himself. As the heart and soul of The Bear’s kitchen, Marcus takes his talents to an even higher level. In the series finale, we see him send out a beautifully plated dessert. The final scene is a subtle yet powerful symbol of his journey coming full circle. He has learned to balance his passion with his personal life, never losing sight of why he fell in love with cooking in the first place. What if the ending to the show The Bear was that Tina, who has grown into an incredible sous chef, continues to be the emotional anchor of the team? Where she stays or if she follows Sydney to a new venture, she remains a fierce leader and a role model for younger cooks. I would imagine that Ebraheim, who has often struggled with change and finds his own path. In the final moments of the series, "The Bear" is thriving—not just in terms of success but in the way it has become a home for all these misfits turned professionals. We get glimpses of where everyone ends up, and the last shot is a simple and quiet moment. This ending would be satisfying because it honors the journey of each character while staying true to the show’s tone. Winning this scholarship is more than just financial assistance, it is an opportunity to pursue my dreams.

Answer: Category 1: Parts of a Tree: Bark, Trunk, Leaf, Root (All structural components of a tree) Category 2: Planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn (Planets in our solar system) Category 3: Vocal Ranges: Bass, Alto, Tenor, Soprano (Four main types of singing) Category 4: Precious Gemstones: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Topaz (All precious gemstones) In summary, this Connections puzzle was designed to provide a challenge to the solver, requiring them to think critically to identify hidden patterns and relationships across different categories of things like condiments, metals, music, and card suits. With the inclusion of both obvious and subtle connections, solvers are encouraged to think outside of the box and discover relationships they may not have noticed on their own. LeBron James Fan Scholarship
Autumn Harrison Lebron James Fan Scholarship Fan of LeBron James and His Place in Basketball History As a lifelong fan of the game, my admiration for LeBron James stems from his incredible skill set and his leadership, longevity, and impact both on and off the court. His ability to adapt to the evolution of basketball while consistently performing at an elite level makes him one of the greatest players to ever play the game. However, the debate over whether he is the greatest basketball player of all time remains a topic of passionate discussion among fans and analysts alike. One of the primary reasons I am a fan of LeBron James is his all-around ability. Unlike many players who specialize in scoring, playmaking, or defense, LeBron excels in all facets of the game. His combination of size, strength, speed, and basketball IQ allows him to dominate in multiple positions. He can take over a game with his scoring, distribute the ball like a point guard, and lock down opponents defensively. His versatility is unmatched, making him a player who can impact the game in countless ways. I believe that makes him the greatest basketball player of all time, not to mention a truly great person. There are several key reasons why I admire LeBron James. One is his talent. He has won countless awards for his skills on the court. But beyond the awards, the way he plays shows his passion for the sport. Another is his leadership and resilience. Throughout his career, he has faced immense pressure and scrutiny but has continually risen to the challenge. Whether it was leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first-ever NBA championship in 2016 or making deep playoff runs with different teams, LeBron has proven time and again that he thrives under pressure. His leadership extends beyond the court as well—he has been a vocal advocate for social justice, education, and community development, using his platform to inspire positive change. The debate about whether LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time often comes down to a comparison with Michael Jordan. While Jordan's six championships and unmatched scoring ability set a high bar, LeBron's longevity, versatility, and overall impact make a strong case for his GOAT (Greatest of All Time) status. LeBron has played at an elite level for over two decades, breaking numerous records, including becoming the all-time leading scorer in NBA history. His ability to sustain excellence across different eras of basketball adds weight to his argument as the greatest. In conclusion, I have immense respect for LeBron James. His domination on the court is no question, but his versatility, leadership, and off-court contributions make him a once-in-a-generation player. There is no question that he has left an indelible mark on the sport and inspired millions worldwide. Whether or not he is the greatest of all time is up for debate, but there is no question that LeBron James deserves to be in the conversation. For all these reasons, I will remain a devoted fan of this icon. Being considered for this scholarship is a high honor and a privilege for me. The consideration acknowledges my hard work, dedication, and aspirations, and is a testament to my academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment to making a positive impact on my community. This opportunity is more than just financial assistance. It's also a sign of my potential and a stepping stone towards achieving my educational and career goals.
    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
Autumn Harrison 'GUTS' - Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship I'm a Olivia Rodrigo’s fan, because her music is more than just catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics, it’s a soundtrack to my emotions, experiences, and personal growth. Whether she’s singing about heartbreak, self-doubt, or the struggles of growing up, Olivia captures the unfiltered emotions of adolescence with honesty and vulnerability. Her ability to turn personal struggles into powerful anthems makes her music feel like a safe space, a place where I can feel understood and seen. Being an Olivia Rodrigo fan isn’t just about loving her songs—it’s about connecting with the stories she tells and finding pieces of myself in her lyrics. One lyric from GUTS that stands out is from "Teenage Dream": "They all say that it gets better, it gets better the more you grow / Yeah, they all say that it gets better, it gets better, but what if I don’t?" This lyric encapsulates the uncertainty and anxiety that often define adolescence. There's this societal expectation that growing up means things will automatically fall into place, but for many teenagers, that reassurance feels hollow. The fear of stagnation—of not becoming who you're supposed to be—hits hard, especially in a world that constantly pressures young people to achieve and change. Another reason this lyric is so poignant is that it reflects the loneliness of feeling like you’re the only one struggling. Even though most teenagers experience self-doubt, it often feels like everyone else is handling life better than you are. This lyric also reflects the crushing pressure many teenagers feel to be exceptional. Adolescence is often romanticized as a time of transformation, where you’re supposed to find yourself, excel in school, and prepare for adulthood. But what if you don’t live up to those expectations? The uncertainty of who you’re becoming can be terrifying, especially when you compare yourself to others who seem to have it all figured out. For me, this lyric resonates because adolescence can feel like a waiting game, where you're supposed to outgrow insecurities and struggles, but sometimes, they don’t just disappear with age. It captures the inner turmoil of wondering if you’re falling behind or if you’ll ever truly feel comfortable in your skin. Olivia Rodrigo nails the feeling of self-doubt that lingers even as you grow up, making it a powerful reflection of teenage angst. In the end, the power of this lyric lies in its raw honesty. It acknowledges the fear that things might not improve, validating a feeling many teens experience but struggle to express. It reminds us that growing up is messy, uncertain, and often scary—but that we’re not alone in feeling that way.
    Love Island Fan Scholarship
Autumn Harrison Love Island Fan Scholarship My Love Island Challenge is called "Dirty Desire," a mind-bending trust and strategy challenge where Islanders must navigate a web of secrets, fake confessions, and surprise betrayals! “Dirty Desire” will test their ability to spot deception, their loyalty to their partners, and their willingness to throw others under the bus to win. For the Challenge Setup: Location: A dramatic game-show-style setup in the garden or on the beach, complete with spotlights, a podium, and a glowing muddy "Dirty Desire" sign. Props: Truth and lie cards, buzzers, and a "trap door" - Build a platform that drops losing players into a pool of mud for ultimate drama. Vibe: Think of it as a mix between a lie detector test and Bluff & Betrayal. Game Instructions: Stage 1: The Juicy Secret Round Each Islander writes a private juicy statement about themselves—some are true, and some are false. Examples: “I have a crush on someone else in the villa.” “I don’t see myself staying with my partner in the villa.” “I’ve stolen someone’s partner before.” They must convincingly read it aloud to the group as if it were 100% true—no matter what. Stage 2: Interrogation The rest of the Islanders take turns grilling the speaker for 30 seconds, trying to figure out if they’re lying or telling the truth. They can ask ANY questions, and the speaker must respond with confidence. Stage 3: Islanders Vote & Trap Door Drop After everyone has spoken, Islanders vote on who they think is lying the most. The Islander with the most votes stands on the Trap Door Platform. If they were telling the truth, they are safe. If they were lying, the platform drops, and they fall into the pool of mud. Stage 4: Ultimate Twist The final stage shakes things up—Islanders who fool the most people with a lie win immunity from the next recoupling. Meanwhile, anyone who was voted a liar but was truthful gets to pick between a solo date with a bombshell or switching couples entirely. Twists & Drama Potential: If someone’s lie is exposed, their partner might lose trust in them. Islanders will suspect their friends and lovers, even when they're innocent. The final twist could shake up the entire villa, leading to betrayals, breakups, and new connections. Why It Works: Tests trust, honesty, and strategy. Islanders must be smooth talkers or great detectives. Creates epic moments when someone confidently defends a fake confession. Forces Islanders to question everything. Loyalty will be put to the test. This new game is sure to be all the drama we didn't save for our mama! Thank you for considering my application for the Love Island Fan scholarship. If chosen as the recipient, I would be immensely grateful for the award. This scholarship would be incredibly beneficial in alleviating some of the financial pressure that comes with pursuing higher education. By diminishing my tuition costs, I'll be able to focus on my studies, which will ultimately allow me to make a significant impact in my chosen field. It would truly mean the world to me.

She has won 37 World Championship and Olympic medals, making her the most decorated gymnast in history. One of the key reasons Simone Biles is my favorite athlete to support is her unparalleled dominance in her gymnastics routines. With a combination of power, grace, and skill, she has redefined what is possible in the sport. Her ability to execute moves that no other gymnast dares attempt, including skills named after her, showcases her commitment to pushing boundaries. Watching her perform on the Olympic stage is nothing short of amazing. She captivates audiences, judges, and fellow gymnasts with routines that defy gravity and set new standards for athletic excellence. However, Biles' greatness extends beyond physical talent; her mental toughness and advocacy have made an even greater impact. She has faced immense pressure, both as a competitor and as a public figure, yet she has never shied away from advocating for her well-being. During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she made the difficult decision to withdraw from several events to prioritize her mental health. It was a move that sparked global discussions about the importance of mental well-being in sports. Her openness about her struggles proved that strength is not just about physical ability but also about knowing when to take a step back. This resonated with me deeply because I have struggled with prioritizing my mental health throughout my life. I have always let my job take precedence over my well-being until a few months ago when I was laid off. This forced me to reevaluate my priorities and reflect on what truly mattered for my present and future. Her decision to prioritize mental health made me realize the importance of doing the same in my own life. Just as she took control of her well-being, I learned to reassess my priorities after my job loss, focusing on what truly matters. Additionally, Biles' impact extends beyond the gym. She has used her platform to speak out against abuse in sports, advocate for young athletes, and support important social issues. Her willingness to stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity, proves that she is more than just a champion in gymnastics; she is a champion in life. Cheering for Simone Biles means more than celebrating her incredible athleticism; it means supporting an athlete who exemplifies hard work, resilience, and the courage to be true to oneself. Her legacy is not just defined by medals and titles but by the barriers she has broken and the inspiration she has provided to millions around the world. For these reasons, Simone Biles continues to be my favorite Team USA athlete to support. I will proudly cheer for her as she inspires and shapes the future of gymnastics and empowers generations to come.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Autumn Harrison Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship This scholarship is more than just an opportunity; it is a way to honor how Billie Eilish’s music has profoundly shaped my emotional journey, giving me strength in moments of vulnerability, a sense of belonging in times of isolation, and a deeper connection to the world through her raw and honest storytelling. I feel that Billie Eilish's music resonates so deeply with her fans because of her raw vulnerability, unique sound, and ability to capture complex emotions. Here are my top three Billie Eilish songs and why they resonate so deeply with me. 1. "Happier Than Ever" This song is pure emotional release. It starts as a gentle ballad but explodes into a rock-infused anthem of anger, liberation, and self-empowerment. The build-up mirrors the feeling of finally letting go of someone who was holding you back, making it incredibly cathartic for me. 2. "Everything I Wanted" This track explores themes of fame, mental health, and Billie’s close relationship with her brother, Finneas. The dreamy, melancholic production makes it feel almost hypnotic, and the lyrics touch on deep emotions like loneliness and gratitude in a way that feels universally relatable. This song helps me feel the emotions I’m going through and comforts me. 3. "When The Party’s Over" The minimalism of this song is what makes it so powerful. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Autumn Harrison Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship Experiences with mental health hold a profound power to shape one's aspirations, interpersonal relationships, and overall perspective on life. In this essay, I will delve into how my personal encounters with mental health challenges have intricately molded my ambitions, enhanced my connections with others, and expanded my understanding of the complexities of the human experience. Throughout my journey, dealing with my mental health has been nothing short of transformational, particularly in how I view my career aspirations. Initially, I was driven by traditional benchmarks of success: a high-paying job, a prestigious title, and societal recognition. However, as I faced periods of anxiety and depression, I began to recognize the paramount importance of mental wellness in achieving fulfillment. These struggles acted as a catalyst, prompting me to redirect my ambitions from chasing conventional success to advocating for mental health awareness and providing support for others grappling with similar issues. This pivotal shift reveals how personal experiences can redefine one’s objectives, steering them toward paths that offer deeper meaning and the potential for significant impact on the lives of others. My mental health journey has also significantly influenced my relationships, cultivating a profound sense of empathy and understanding within me. Navigating vulnerability allowed me to see the multifaceted nature of others’ experiences, making me more attuned to their struggles and emotions. Whether it was comforting a friend during their darkest moments or volunteering at a local mental health organization, I found that my capacity for compassion expanded. These authentic interactions have fostered stronger, more supportive connections because I no longer view relationships through a lens of surface-level engagement but rather as opportunities to understand and uplift one another. This personal growth illustrates how confronting mental health challenges can enrich our bonds with those around us, creating a network of support grounded in empathy and shared experiences. Furthermore, my encounters with mental health issues have significantly broadened my perspective on life itself. I have come to appreciate the intricate interconnectedness between mental health and various dimensions of existence—be it physical health, social interactions, or career satisfaction. I now recognize that many battles are fought silently and often go unnoticed, shaping the lives of individuals in profound ways. This awareness has fostered a compassionate and less judgmental outlook, enabling me to appreciate the resilience it takes to navigate such personal struggles. My evolved worldview not only emphasizes the need for understanding and kindness in our interactions but also highlights the critical role mental health plays in the fabric of society as a whole. In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have been instrumental in reshaping my aspirations, deepening my relationships, and expanding my understanding of the intricate tapestry of human existence. These challenges have guided me onto a path of advocacy, enriched my empathetic responses, and provided me with a nuanced appreciation for the complexities faced by individuals in their personal battles. Embracing these experiences has not only facilitated my growth but has also reinforced the vital importance of mental health awareness and the necessity of fostering a supportive and compassionate society for all.
Jennifer Gephart Memorial Working Mothers Scholarship
Autumn Harrison Jennifer Gephart Memorial Working Mothers Scholarship Overcoming Challenges, Embracing Significance, and Pursuing Career Aspirations My journey has been filled with unique obstacles, yet it holds profound significance for both personal growth and my family’s well-being. Life presents us with responsibilities that test our resilience and multitasking abilities. One of the most demanding yet rewarding experiences I have encountered is balancing work and caregiving. Juggling a professional career while ensuring the well-being of a loved one has tested my endurance and profoundly shaped my career goals and personal growth. A pressing challenge in managing both work and caregiving is time management. The unpredictability of caregiving duties, whether from sudden medical emergencies or emotional support needs, often clashes with rigid work schedules and deadlines. There have been days when I had to make difficult choices between attending an important work meeting and taking my loved one to a medical appointment. The constant need to be available in both roles has led to exhaustion and self-doubt. Emotional toll is another significant challenge that comes with caregiving. The weight of responsibility can be overwhelming, leading to stress and burnout. Balancing personal emotions while maintaining professionalism at work requires immense mental strength. Additionally, the financial strain of caregiving, including medical expenses and time away from work, adds a layer of complexity to this balancing act. Despite these challenges, caregiving has been a profoundly meaningful experience. It has reinforced the importance of empathy, patience, and adaptability—qualities that have enhanced my professional interactions and leadership skills. Through caregiving, I have learned the significance of prioritization and efficient task management, invaluable skills in the workplace. This experience has also deepened my understanding of the need for workplace policies that support caregivers. The lack of flexibility in some work environments highlights the necessity for companies to provide remote work options, paid leave policies, and mental health support. Consequently, I have developed a strong advocacy for better work-life balance initiatives in the professional world. Balancing work and caregiving has played a pivotal role in shaping my career aspirations. I have come to appreciate professions that emphasize flexibility and social responsibility. My experiences have motivated me to seek roles in organizations that value work-life balance and actively support employees with caregiving responsibilities. Additionally, I am inspired to contribute to policy development and organizational structures that enhance the well-being of working caregivers. This experience has also strengthened my interest in leadership roles where I can implement changes promoting employee wellness. I envision myself in a position where I can advocate for comprehensive employee support programs, ensuring that others do not have to choose between their careers and caregiving responsibilities. The journey of balancing work and caregiving has been one of hardship and growth. The challenges I have faced have tested my limits, yet equipped me with invaluable skills and perspectives. This experience has not only influenced my resilience but also guided my career goals toward creating more inclusive and supportive work environments. As I move forward in my professional journey, I remain committed to fostering workplaces that recognize and accommodate the diverse responsibilities of their employees, ensuring no one navigates these challenges alone.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
It has been an interesting and challenging journey to reach this stage in my life. I was laid off last December, and that became a pivotal moment for me. It made me realize that I needed to pursue something more meaningful for my career and my life. As a single mother, I have been raising my son independently, and I want to show him that you can always achieve your dreams and goals, regardless of your circumstances or age. I didn’t waste time applying for and researching new career options, utilizing my veteran benefits, and exploring community resources to help make my dreams a reality. Having never been laid off before, the experience hurt my confidence. I went through an emotional rollercoaster of feelings, but I remained determined to turn my anger into something positive. I have always wanted to pursue a career in the wine industry, specifically in management. I aspire to be a leader who can motivate my team, share knowledge, offer guidance, and express compassion for those around me. My goal is to become a hospitality manager at a tasting room in the Willamette Valley, and I believe I can achieve this position. I have an associate's degree and will be pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business Management. I have enrolled at Western Oregon University and will begin classes in the spring. I know it will be a challenge to balance school, work, and being a full-time mom, but at my age, I understand what I want to do with my life. I have the job experience, and I know I will truly thrive with the skills I have gained through my life and education. I feel the younger generations deserve managers who believe in working efficiently and respectfully. I have already begun to implement my plan to make my goal of obtaining a bachelor's degree financially feasible. I have applied for FAFSA and 50 scholarships. I was awarded the Pell Grant and the Merit Scholarship from WOU. I have also connected with the Veteran Resource Center at the school, where there are two different grants I can apply for if needed, either for emergencies or possibly tuition. Once my service-connected disability claim is updated, I will be able to apply for the VEER program with the VA, which could be available for the fall term. I believe this is the path I should follow, and I will keep taking the necessary steps to succeed. My biggest goal is to buy my first home. Once I secure a salaried management position, it will enable me to own a home for my son and me. I want to be the kind of mom who can support his future. It would be an incredible feeling to finally have a place to call home. I have had this goal for many years and have tried to buy a home in the past, but I didn’t qualify. However, I am not going to stop until I accomplish this goal. I have been steadily working on my credit and saving any money I can. In two years, I see myself graduating, working in a salaried management position, and making an offer to buy my first home. With God, all things are possible. I trust in His guidance for this beautiful journey I’m on.
    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Contemplating my journey through motherhood up to the current day serves as the most illustrative example I can provide regarding mental health and its impact on my life, relationships, and professional aspirations. I've had quite an adventure in my life with many ups and downs, and I never fully understood what motherhood would mean for me when I got pregnant. The father urged me to consider an abortion, which ultimately led me to embrace my role as a single mother. At the age of 24, I was thrilled at the prospect of bringing a healthy baby boy into the world. I pondered the possibility that this might be my only chance to have a child, and I found no compelling reason to forgo this opportunity. During that time, my roommates made the decision to evict me, as they were unwilling to live with a pregnant woman and manage the presence of an infant. Fortunately, I encountered someone who expressed care for me when I was a month pregnant; however, this individual later subjected me to abuse during my eighth month of pregnancy, inflicting harm on my belly and choking me, resulting in bruises all down my neck. I contacted law enforcement, he was arrested, and I was compelled to leave that situation. I reached out to my mother, who generously covered the cost of my plane ticket, allowing me to relocate to her home. I was overwhelmed with distress and recognized the need to rebuild my life. My mother provided unwavering support and assistance throughout this challenging time. Giving birth without the father present was an emotional start to my motherhood experience, and I felt quite alone. However, my heart was filled with joy for my beautiful son. I knew I had to do something to provide for us, so I reached out to a local college and decided to pursue my associate's degree. It wasn't easy to live on my own and care for my little one, especially since the father was non-existent. I finished school, but finding a job and affording housing proved challenging. Eventually, I started working two jobs: one as a caregiver and the other as a nighttime bartender. I was able to provide for myself and my son; we secured our own place, and I felt accomplished as a new mother. I later met someone and entered a five-year relationship, which brought more stability to my life. Yet, I felt unfulfilled, as I was only bartending while wanting more out of life. After facing an emotional downfall when my partner cheated on me, I had to start over again. I moved into an apartment within a week, and although it was incredibly hard, I didn't go back. I sought therapy for both myself and my son, and it has taken many years to figure out how to be the best mom and what aspirations I needed for myself. I focused on learning resilience, patience, and the importance of believing in myself. In 2021, I secured a better job as a wine educator. I realized that I genuinely love hospitality and all the education that comes with learning about wine, biology, viniculture, and the lifestyle surrounding it. I now aspire to turn my associate's degree into a bachelor's degree in business management and aim to work as management in the wine industry. Future generations need to have someone dependable to guide them; I want to lead them with the patience, empathy, and sincerity they deserve. If I were to receive this grant, it would significantly help me achieve my dreams of a stable career, ensuring my son has a better future after he graduates, and ultimately securing our first home. I didn’t have much support when I graduated high school; I’ve had to work very hard for everything in my life. As a parent, all you want is success in life to make things a bit easier for your child. I will continue to strive for each and every opportunity, showing my son how to succeed in life when you truly want something. I want him to feel confident as he ventures into the world and eventually creates his own family. This grant would be a blessing not just for me but for my son as well. Ultimately, I've learned that motherhood is full of surprises; there is no handbook, and you have to figure it out as you go. You will make mistakes, cry, and laugh, but most of all, you have to care for your mental health. I'm thankful I reached out to my support system and always looked for better opportunities. I started medication when I needed and the therapy sessions truly helped me cope. I'm ready to move forward and help others in need. I wouldn't change anything about my story; it's my responsibility to create the next chapters. I feel successful because of what I've learned throughout my journey.
