Kristie's Kids - Loving Arms Around Those Impacted By Cancer Scholarship
My long-term goal is to establish my own law firm dedicated to serving individuals in my community who may not otherwise have access to legal guidance. I am drawn to the field of law because it combines problem solving, communication, and advocacy. These are skills that allow me not only to think critically, but also to stand beside others during their most difficult moments. My commitment to this path has been shaped by service, leadership, and most powerfully, my family’s experience with cancer.
When my mother was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer, my world changed overnight. She had always been the strongest person I knew, and watching her endure painful treatments and constant uncertainty was heartbreaking. Fear became part of our everyday life. As the eldest of three siblings, I stepped into responsibilities far beyond my years. I learned to cook so my siblings would have warm meals while my father worked late and my mother rested. I became an emotional support system for my younger siblings even when I was struggling internally.
One night after football practice, I returned home physically exhausted to find my younger sister crying from anxiety about our mother’s condition. I stayed with her, made her favorite grilled cheese, and then studied late into the night despite exhaustion and worry. My grades slipped during my junior year, and I feared what that meant for my future, but at that moment my priorities were clear. Through that experience, I learned that leadership often requires sacrifice, patience, and compassion when no recognition is given. While cancer brought fear into my life, it also taught me resilience, gratitude, and responsibility.
Service became the way I transformed those lessons into action. Volunteering at the St. Rose/St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry exposed me to families facing serious hardship despite working tirelessly to survive. That experience deepened my empathy and reinforced my belief that everyone deserves dignity and support. Similarly, my work with the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals taught me patience and the importance of advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves. This experience also supports my desire to pursue a legal career.
Scouting has also played a significant role in shaping my values. After ten years of dedication, I am now a candidate for Eagle Scout. For my Eagle Scout project, I led the construction of picnic benches at the baseball fields where I grew up. The benches feature pink ribbons and a plaque honoring families affected by cancer. This project serves as a tribute to my mother’s strength and a symbol of hope for others facing similar battles.
Academically, my involvement on my high school’s Academic Debate Team prepared me for the analytical demands of law. As team president, I learned how to lead peers, resolve conflict, and advocate effectively. Debate strengthened my research, public speaking, and critical thinking skills which are all tools essential for a legal career.
By attending college, I hope to build the foundation necessary to attend law school and eventually open a law firm rooted in integrity and service. Cancer reshaped my life in painful ways, but it also gave my goals clarity. For me, success is measured not by personal achievement alone, but by the positive impact I make by helping others navigate their hardest moments.
