Bio

I am currently a Senior Nursing student at Walla Walla University. I am set to graduate next June and start work as a School Nurse. I would like to work for a few years, but eventually go back to school to earn my master's degree and work as a nurse practitioner. I have faced many challenges to where I am. Although these were difficult things I have set my mind to reach my goals, which sometimes means changing the plan a little bit. I look forward to continuing my education and building a life with my partner.

It is hard to know what you want to do. I did not really know what I wanted as a high schooler, but I knew that nursing would provide me with a wide range of opportunities and allow me to change my trajectory if I was in an ill-fit position. Nursing also allows for upward mobility and for continued education which I would like to incorporate into my career as a nurse. While these are the logistical advantages to nursing, nursing is also a great fit for my personality and my character. I have always been a lover of the sciences and especially of the intricate and amazing design of the human body. I am also a very just person, and I always try to treat people fairly. I try to remember that you do not know the whole story of another person or their position in life and there is always room for the benefit of the doubt. One of the main ways that I show care towards others is with acts of service and serving others is a foundational pillar of the nursing profession. These qualities put me in a position to be an outstanding and compassionate nurse in the future. It is odd to me that I am applying for scholarships in the first place, because when I graduated high school, I had no worries about how I was going to pay for school. I was awarded a full-ride scholarship by the US Air Force ROTC program to complete my degree in nursing. However, 16 days before I was meant to begin school in the Fall of 2018, I was hit head on by a driver under the influence of heroin. I sustained many injuries but was able to make a full recovery. I completed a year of rehabilitation and reapplied to Oregon State University where I had planned to go to school. I started that year, still in a great deal of physical and emotion pain and tried my hardest. I resumed my efforts in ROTC and was waiting to hear back from their medical evaluation board, but unfortunately, the injuries I had sustained made me ineligible for the scholarship despite my continued interest and effort in the program. I would no longer be receiving financial support from the program and yet another dimension of my future was altered. Since then, I have managed to transfer to another nursing program and fund my schooling by other means. I am now a Senior in nursing school and plan to graduate this June. This incident and this loss are things that I carry with me every day. It is something that has given me the background and the insight to relate to my patients since I have experienced the dependency on others that hospitalization and rehabilitation presents. It has forced me to change as a person and I have grown in countless ways. this has made me want to be the person that is there for families and for individuals that are in situations like mine and nursing presents that opportunity. When I graduate, I plan to work in some type of community nursing, most likely as a nurse in an educational institution. In the future I would like to go back to school to get my master’s degree and work as a Nurse Practitioner. I also plan to remain in the city that I grew up in and serve the community that served me.
