Women’s Health is an issue I want my career to focus on. Specifically, the maternal death rate of Black mothers. Black women are three times more likely to face complications leading to death during childbirth compared to their White counterparts. By furthering my education, I want to create a foundation of birthing centers across America that specialize in providing quality care to the Black community to combat this concern. In addition to completing my Biology degree in undergrad to aid me in achieving this goal, I will also obtain a degree in International affairs to allow me to look at health, justice, and education on a global scale. I believe these three pillars are of the utmost importance in today’s society, and I want to be one of the many people in the world that creates a team to uphold them. It is no secret that we are living in times where the implementation of government policies are beginning to encroach on the autonomy and or access of healthcare, justice, education, and personhood. I want to bring awareness and solutions to the issues at hand. Women should have the right to choose what happens to their bodies, children should be flourishing in creativity and literacy rather than fear of attending school, and corrupt systems should be held accountable and reformed. Reformation is so important, especially when looking at education in low income areas. Volunteering with not only my high school, but Howard University’s Alternative Spring Break opened my eyes to the disadvantages so many students are faced with simply because of the zip code they were born in. Being in classrooms where fifth graders and eighth graders were both learning basic reading skills was heartbreaking to say the least. Hearing high school students say they could not focus on their homework because they have to go to work until 4:00 a.m. to support themselves was no easier to hear. The youth of today deserve a system that will enrich their skill sets, support their different learning processes, and encourage individuality. While I don’t have an exact roadmap of how to tackle every issue, I have no doubt that it is possible to generate a positive impact. I am dedicated to the betterment of society and change that will occur as this is my purpose. It is ingrained into my very being to strive for the change I want to see in the world.
