Volleyball and leadership experiences played a major role in shaping who I am and ultimately influenced my decision to pursue a degree in nursing. For me, nursing is more than just a career path. It is a profession built on compassion, resilience, problem-solving, and service to others. I am passionate about nursing because it combines science with human connection and gives me the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day. My passion for nursing developed through the experiences and lessons I learned both in school and through athletics. As someone who has spent years playing competitive volleyball, I have learned how important trust, communication, and support are when people face challenges. As captain of the beach volleyball team at Kamehameha Schools, I learned how to lead under pressure, encourage others, and remain calm during difficult situations. Volleyball taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience, but it also taught me how powerful it can be when someone feels supported and understood. Those experiences made me realize that I naturally gravitate toward helping others, especially during moments when they may feel overwhelmed or vulnerable. Nursing stood out to me because it reflects many of the qualities I value most. Nurses are not only responsible for providing medical care, but they also provide comfort, reassurance, and emotional support to patients and families during some of the hardest moments of their lives. I admire the strength and compassion nurses demonstrate every day. They must think critically, adapt quickly, and stay composed under pressure while still treating every patient with empathy and respect. I am passionate about entering a field where I can challenge myself academically while also making a direct impact on others. Another reason I am passionate about nursing is that healthcare is constantly evolving. I am excited by the idea of continuously learning and growing throughout my career. Science and medicine are fields that require curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to adapt, and I am motivated by the opportunity to keep expanding my knowledge and skills. I enjoy environments that push me to improve, and I know nursing school will challenge me both academically and personally in ways that will help me grow into a stronger and more capable person. This fall, I will attend the University of Portland to continue working toward my goals in healthcare. Although leaving home for college will be a major transition, I see it as an opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone, gain new experiences, and prepare myself for the future I hope to build. In the future, I hope to contribute to my community as a nurse by providing compassionate and dependable care to people from all backgrounds. I want to be someone who makes patients feel safe, heard, and respected during difficult moments in their lives. I also hope to inspire and encourage other young women to pursue careers in STEM and healthcare. Women belong in fields that challenge and empower them, and I want to be part of continuing that progress. Pursuing nursing is important to me because it allows me to combine my passion for helping others with my interest in science and healthcare. More than anything, I want a career where I can make a lasting and positive difference in the lives of the people around me. Nursing will give me the opportunity to serve others with compassion, continue learning throughout my life, and contribute to my community in a meaningful way.

One of the biggest challenges I have faced was losing my passion for something that had always been a huge part of my identity. For most of my life, volleyball was more than just a sport to me. It was my escape, my source of confidence, and the place where I felt most connected to the people around me. The gym felt like home. I loved the energy of being surrounded by teammates who pushed and supported one another like family. But during one indoor volleyball season, everything changed. Many of the teammates I had grown close to were gone, and the environment that once made me love the sport no longer felt the same. Even though I was still playing volleyball, the joy and excitement I had always felt started to disappear. Practices became something I forced myself to get through rather than something I looked forward to. I felt disconnected from my team, the game, and even myself. For the first time in years, I questioned whether I still loved the sport that had shaped so much of my life. At the same time, I was learning how difficult change can be. I realized I had depended heavily on the people and environment around me to feel motivated and confident. Losing that familiar support system challenged me emotionally and mentally. I struggled with frustration, self doubt, and the fear of losing something that had always grounded me. However, that challenge ultimately pushed me to grow in ways I never expected. Through beach volleyball, I slowly rediscovered my passion for the sport. Unlike indoor volleyball, beach volleyball forced me to rely more on myself, adapt quickly, and embrace discomfort. Over time, I gained confidence and found joy in the game again. I learned that growth often comes from being placed in uncomfortable situations that force you to adjust and rebuild yourself. That experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of finding confidence from within rather than depending entirely on external circumstances. Today, I carry those lessons into every part of my life. I am more independent, mentally strong, and willing to step outside of my comfort zone. This challenge showed me that setbacks are not endings. They are opportunities to grow into a stronger version of yourself. Pursuing higher education will help me continue building that future. This fall, I will attend the University of Portland, where I hope to continue growing academically, personally, and professionally. Leaving Hawaiʻi and moving to the mainland will be another major transition, but my experiences have taught me that growth comes through change and perseverance. Higher education will allow me to expand my perspective, develop new skills, and work toward a meaningful career while continuing to challenge myself in new environments. Most importantly, it will help me build a future where I can create opportunities not only for myself, but also give back to the people and community that helped shape who I am today.

Growing up on Oʻahu taught me the importance of caring for others and being there for people during difficult moments. In Hawaiʻi, community and family are deeply valued, and I grew up surrounded by people who constantly supported one another. Watching that sense of care within my family, school, and community inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day. That is what led me to nursing. My interest in nursing comes from both personal experiences and the kind of person I strive to be. I have always been someone who enjoys helping others, listening, and offering support when people need it most. Through athletics, especially volleyball, I learned how important encouragement, teamwork, and trust are. As captain of the beach volleyball team at Kamehameha Schools, I learned how to lead under pressure, communicate effectively, and support others through challenges. Those experiences strengthened my ability to stay calm in stressful situations and showed me how rewarding it is to help others succeed and feel supported. Nursing reflects many of those same qualities, which is why I feel strongly connected to the profession. I also want to pursue nursing because it is a career centered around compassion and lifelong learning. Nurses play such an important role in people’s lives, not only through medical care but also through emotional support and comfort. I admire the strength, patience, and resilience nurses demonstrate every day. The ability to help someone through fear, pain, or uncertainty is something I deeply respect and hope to do myself in the future. This fall, I will attend the University of Portland to continue my education and work toward becoming a nurse. Pursuing higher education will allow me to develop the knowledge, clinical skills, and experience necessary to succeed in healthcare. I know nursing school will challenge me academically and personally, but I am excited to grow through those experiences and prepare for a career dedicated to helping others. As a nurse, I hope to contribute to my community by providing compassionate and dependable care to people from all backgrounds. I want patients to feel safe, respected, and genuinely cared for during difficult moments in their lives. I also hope to give back to Hawaiʻi by using my education and experiences to support local communities and inspire others to pursue careers that enable them to make a positive impact. Nursing is more than just a career to me. It is an opportunity to serve others, build meaningful connections, and make a lasting difference in the lives of the people around me.
      Hawai'i Island Sunset Scholarship
Growing up on the island of Oʻahu has shaped nearly every part of who I am and the person I hope to become in the future. Living in Hawaiʻi taught me the importance of community, resilience, humility, and hard work. On Oʻahu, relationships and connections are deeply valued. Whether through family, school, athletics, or local culture, I was raised in an environment where people constantly support and uplift one another. Being surrounded by that sense of community gave me a strong foundation and taught me the importance of representing where I come from with pride and respect. At the same time, growing up in Hawaiʻi also opened my eyes to the challenges that many local students face when pursuing higher education. Opportunities can feel limited, and for many students, attending college on the mainland comes with financial and emotional sacrifices. Leaving home means leaving family, culture, and the support systems that have always been there. Even though I know this transition will be difficult, I also know it is an opportunity for growth and for building a future that reflects the sacrifices my family has made for me. One of the most important parts of my life growing up on Oʻahu has been athletics, especially volleyball. Through indoor and beach volleyball, I learned discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and leadership. Sports became more than just competition for me. Volleyball gave me confidence, structure, and an outlet during stressful times in my life. As captain of the beach volleyball team at Kamehameha Schools, I learned how to lead by example, support my teammates, and stay composed under pressure. Being a captain taught me responsibility and strengthened my ability to encourage others while continuing to push myself to improve. Volleyball also taught me how to adapt when things do not go as planned. During one indoor volleyball season, I struggled after losing teammates and the team environment that once made me love the sport. I felt disconnected from something that had always been a huge part of my identity. However, through beach volleyball, I rediscovered my passion for the game and learned how growth often comes through discomfort and change. That experience strengthened my mindset and showed me how important resilience is both on and off the court. I am passionate about pursuing higher education because I want to continue growing as a student, athlete, and individual while building a successful future for myself and my family. This fall, I will attend the University of Portland, where I hope to expand my perspective, challenge myself academically, and take advantage of opportunities that will help me succeed in my future career. While I am excited for this next chapter, I also know I will carry the values Oʻahu instilled in me wherever I go. This scholarship would help relieve the financial burden that comes with attending college on the mainland. Traveling far from home for school comes with significant expenses, including tuition, housing, travel costs, and other necessities. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my academics, athletics, and personal growth rather than worrying as much about finances. More importantly, it would represent support and belief in my goals and future. I will continue striving to represent Oʻahu, my family, and my community with pride throughout my college journey and beyond.

My name is Aubrey Leilani Painter, and I am a 2030 beach volleyball commit to the University of Portland. My love for beach volleyball began my sophomore year when I first joined my high school’s beach volleyball team. Before that, indoor volleyball was everything I knew, and I believed it was my only path. However, beach volleyball quickly became so much more than just another version of the sport. It became something that healed me. I had been struggling with an ongoing knee injury from indoor volleyball, and the physical differences of beach helped my body recover while still allowing me to compete. At the same time, the beach environment helped me mentally. The coaching, the slower pace, and the emphasis on individual responsibility allowed me to rebuild my confidence and rediscover my love for the game. My sophomore year was not easy. I was new to beach volleyball, and I struggled to adjust. I was not very successful, and it was frustrating to feel like I was starting over. However, everything changed my junior year. Something finally clicked. I became more confident in my skills, more comfortable on the sand, and more motivated than ever. That was when I realized I wanted to pursue beach volleyball full time and continue playing in college. That summer, I dedicated myself completely to improving. I played in tournaments, emailed college coaches, and spent countless hours training. I knew that if I wanted to achieve my goal, I had to work for it. By the end of the summer, my hard work began to pay off, and I started building relationships with college coaches. In November, I was given the opportunity to commit to the University of Portland. It was one of the proudest moments of my life because it showed me that my perseverance, growth, and belief in myself had led me to something I had once thought was out of reach. Choosing beach volleyball also meant making the difficult decision to step away from indoor volleyball. Indoor was where I started, but beach volleyball gave me a new beginning. It allowed me to grow not only as an athlete but also as a person. It taught me resilience, independence, and how to trust myself. I am proud that my path to college was driven by beach volleyball because it represents everything I have overcome. In addition to my athletic goals, I am passionate about my academic future. I plan to enter the nursing program at the University of Portland. From my first visit, I fell in love with the campus, the people, and the supportive environment. Nursing appeals to me because it will allow me to make a difference in people’s lives during their most vulnerable moments. After graduating, I hope to return home to the west side of Oahu and serve my community. Growing up there shaped who I am, and I want to give back by caring for the people who raised and supported me. Beach volleyball and nursing both reflect who I am. They require discipline, compassion, and resilience. Beach volleyball gave me a path and helped heal me physically and mentally, and nursing will give me the opportunity to heal others. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue my journey at the University of Portland, and I am excited to grow both as a student athlete and as a future nurse.
