Bio

My name is Athena Garcia and I plan diversify my life skills and abilities in order to manage social change projects at large companies. From working various customer service jobs to earning over 200 SSL hours, I work hard to accommodate others needs and make the world a better place. Making the world a better place is a very common phrase; how have I worked towards it so far? To begin understanding foreign issues and perspectives, I was a member of the Walter Johnson High School (WJHS) Maison Shalom club and I was a participant of the Harvard Foreign Affairs Undergraduate Program. In my home state of Maryland, I have created academic slideshows for two nonprofit organizations: Elevate The Future (ETF) and Seeking Employment Equality and Community (SEEC)! ETF is dedicated to improving access to business and computer science education for students of all economic backgrounds and SEEC strives to help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain independence in their lives. By creating in-depth slideshows for these students, I have already begun making my difference in the world. Academically, I have thrived. While in high school, I participated in the Dual Enrollment program at Montgomery College where I was a Renaissance Honors Scholar at Montgomery College and was named on the Dean’s List. My work is not over; with financial aid from scholarships and a great education, I plan to make the world a better place by ensuring others security and elevating their living circumstances!

Most animes fail to advertise a life lesson to their audience after they’re finished; the same cannot be said about “A Silent Voice” (2017). The emotional movie emphasizes the importance of second chances‒something that many are denied, often for fear of hurt, pride, etc. However, Shouko Nishiyama‒a student bullied for her inability to hear‒is far from arrogant and prideful. She grants her former middle school bully‒Shoya Ishida‒many “second” chances, whereas many would retaliate in that situation. The movie also exemplifies second chances on a larger scale: with life. Later, Shouko attempts suicide; Shoya saves her just before the attempt was successful, and pleads to God that Shouko may have a second chance. God answers the prayer. Their second chance with life allowed for proper apologies and reconciliation. “A Silent Voice'' taught me that second chances lead to inner peace and purification, which many only dream of in their lifetime.

One day, I got an email from the school College/Career Coordinator, discussing the Harvard Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Initiative. Though my GPA wasn’t fantastic and I had no Foreign Affairs experience, I applied; I never anticipated doing anything associated with the #1 school in the world! I spent the next week staying up extremely late working on three mandatory essays. After anxiously waiting for two months, I received an email stating I was accepted. From this, I learned to never let my past determine my future, and to take the risk of failure to gain the possibility of success.
