Bio

I am a dedicated mother of three, pursuing a career in nursing to improve maternal and fetal care for women, parents, and guardians. Georgia has one of the highest maternal morbidity rates for women of color in hospital settings, and I am committed to changing this narrative. With the right education and a compassionate approach, I aim to transform how women experience maternity care in hospitals, ensuring it becomes a more empowering and positive journey. My goal is to help women advocate for their rights, avoid medical complications caused by staff negligence, and navigate issues surrounding inaccurate "informed consent." Ultimately, I aspire to establish my own midwifery practice, using my knowledge and experience to serve parents, children, and families within my community. While paying for tuition out of pocket has been a financial strain on my family, I remain hopeful that financial assistance and scholarships will help me achieve my educational goals and turn my vision into reality.

My passion for helping others reach their fullest potential was ignited through a deeply transformative experience—my third childbirth. This moment opened my eyes to the significant disparities that women of color often face when seeking a natural birth process, particularly when they have a history of cesarean sections. During my delivery, my preferences and desires were disregarded by healthcare providers, leaving me feeling powerless and unheard. This turning point fueled a deep-seated determination to advocate for women in similar situations and inspired me to pursue a career in nursing and midwifery, where I can empower and support women during one of the most pivotal moments of their lives. Being the first in my family to obtain a college degree means more than just personal achievement; it represents breaking generational barriers and paving the way for future opportunities for my children and others in my community. It’s a testament to resilience, determination, and the belief that we can rise above circumstances and build a brighter future. My parents emigrated from Guyana and raised me in an environment where higher education was seen as a privilege, not a given. Achieving my degree is not just about fulfilling my dreams but also about honoring the sacrifices my family made and creating a legacy of empowerment and success. Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), which aligns with my goal of becoming a holistic midwife. Through this path, I aim to address inequities in maternal healthcare and ensure that women, especially women of color, receive the care, respect, and advocacy they deserve. My long-term goal is to establish my own midwifery practice, where I can offer comprehensive and culturally sensitive care to parents, children, and families. I also envision mentoring other aspiring healthcare professionals, fostering a community of advocates dedicated to improving maternal and fetal care. Balancing family life as a mother of three with the demands of my education has been both challenging and rewarding. Currently, I am unemployed, which has made this journey even more difficult. However, these challenges have taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the importance of unwavering determination—qualities that will continue to serve me as I work toward my goals. One of the most significant obstacles I faced was being denied admission to nursing school on my first attempt. While this initially felt like a major setback, I came to view it not as a rejection but as a redirection. It motivated me to strengthen my qualifications and reaffirm my purpose. I earned certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - Basic Life Support (CPR-BLS) and completed doula training, which deepened my understanding of pregnancy, wellness, and mental health. These experiences have honed my skills in empathy, compassion, and patient advocacy—core competencies for helping others achieve their best outcomes in healthcare. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate a significant financial burden but also allow me to focus entirely on my studies and my mission to transform maternal healthcare. This support represents more than just financial assistance; it is a step toward fulfilling my purpose of advocating for women’s health, ensuring that every woman’s voice is heard, and making a lasting impact on my community. Through my education and future practice, I am committed to creating a legacy of care, compassion, and empowerment for families for generations to come.

Two years ago, I lost my father, a man whose love, wisdom, and unwavering support profoundly shaped the person I am today. His passing was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but it also became a source of inspiration and strength as I navigate my journey as a mother and aspiring nurse. My father was my greatest cheerleader. As someone who valued education and perseverance, he encouraged me to pursue nursing school even when the challenges seemed insurmountable. He understood my passion for maternal healthcare and midwifery, recognizing the importance of addressing the disparities that women of color face in the healthcare system. Whenever doubts crept in, my father’s words reminded me of my purpose: “You’re not just doing this for yourself—you’re paving the way for others.” His belief in my potential extended to my role as a mother. My father often reminded me that motherhood is not a barrier but a source of strength. “Your children will grow up seeing your determination,” he said, “and that’s a legacy they’ll carry with them.” These words have stayed with me, giving me the courage to balance the demands of family life with the pursuit of my dreams. Losing my father was devastating. He had always been my source of guidance and a grounding force in my life. Grieving his absence felt like trying to navigate uncharted waters without a compass. Yet, in the midst of this pain, I found clarity. His passing reinforced the fragility of life and the urgency of living with intention. It deepened my resolve to honor his legacy by fully committing to my goals and to the values he instilled in me: compassion, resilience, and service to others. My father’s influence is woven into every step of my nursing journey. When I was denied admission to nursing school on my first attempt, it was his voice I heard urging me to keep going. I earned certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR-BLS) and doula training, using these setbacks as opportunities to grow rather than give up. Now, as I pursue my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), I feel his presence in my determination to advocate for women’s health and improve maternal care, especially for communities that have been overlooked. Beyond my career aspirations, my father’s legacy shapes how I approach motherhood. He taught me the importance of showing up—for my children, for myself, and for the people I hope to serve as a nurse. His lessons in patience, kindness, and dedication are values I strive to pass on to my own children, just as he passed them on to me. Although he is no longer here to see my journey unfold, I carry my father’s spirit with me in everything I do. His memory is a source of comfort and a driving force behind my ambition. I am committed to making him proud by creating a life that reflects the principles he lived by: a life rooted in love, service, and the relentless pursuit of purpose. Losing him was a profound loss, but it also gave me a deeper appreciation for the time we shared and the lessons he imparted. His legacy lives on in my commitment to nursing, motherhood, and making a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Understanding the nature of our universe is essential because it allows us to uncover the fundamental truths that shape our existence. From the forces that govern the motion of galaxies to the intricate molecular structures that sustain life, the universe offers us profound lessons about who we are and our role within it. By striving to understand its nature, we not only advance scientific knowledge but also cultivate a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things. For me, this pursuit is rooted in the desire to address disparities that impact human lives, particularly in healthcare. Just as the universe is governed by principles of balance and harmony, our own well-being relies on the intricate relationships between mind, body, and environment. I see this parallel as an opportunity to bridge disciplines—combining scientific inquiry with holistic approaches to improve how we live and thrive. In my field of interest, nursing and midwifery, understanding the universe begins with comprehending the biological and emotional universes within each individual. The birth process, for example, reflects the cyclical nature of life—creation, growth, and renewal. Yet, disparities in maternal healthcare show that we have not fully embraced the importance of these processes. By applying concepts such as advocacy, empathy, and evidence-based care, I aim to restore balance to these systems, ensuring that every individual receives equitable, compassionate treatment. One key idea I hope to employ is the concept of interconnectedness. Just as no star or planet exists in isolation, no person is separate from the systems around them. Whether addressing healthcare inequities or exploring the mysteries of the cosmos, I believe collaboration is essential. By fostering partnerships between diverse fields—such as science, technology, and community care—we can achieve innovative solutions that honor both individual needs and the collective good. Another concept I value is adaptability. The universe is constantly evolving, and our understanding of it must evolve as well. This principle resonates with my personal journey, as I have learned to see challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth. For example, when I was initially denied admission to nursing school, I used this setback as motivation to enhance my skills and deepen my knowledge. This adaptability will guide my efforts to explore new methods of care and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare system. Finally, curiosity is at the heart of my approach to understanding the universe. Just as astronomers look to the stars to ask “why” and “how,” I strive to question and challenge the status quo in healthcare. Why are certain communities disproportionately affected by maternal mortality? How can we create environments where every patient feels empowered and heard? By asking these questions, I hope to spark meaningful change and inspire others to seek answers that benefit humanity as a whole. In my pursuit of these goals, I see the act of understanding the universe as more than a scientific endeavor—it is a moral imperative. By studying its principles and applying them to human systems, we can build a world that reflects the harmony and balance inherent in the cosmos. Through compassion, collaboration, and an unwavering curiosity, I am committed to making that vision a reality.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Every day, I strive to embody strong leadership and communication skills, resilience, unselfishness, focus, and a strong work ethic in all aspects of my life. As a mother of three who struggled with mental health throughout adolescence and adulthood, these traits are not just abstract concepts—but a priority throughout my daily routine and my journey toward achieving my goals. In my household, I lead by example. Effective communication is vital in managing a family, and I ensure that I listen actively and communicate clearly with my children, encouraging them to express their thoughts and feelings. This approach fosters an environment of trust and mutual respect, which I believe are fundamental components of leadership. In my academic and professional pursuits, I use these skills to collaborate with others, whether it’s in group projects or in volunteering as a doula. Leadership, to me, is about empowering others to reach their full potential while guiding them with empathy and understanding. Life has presented me with many challenges, from balancing motherhood with my education to facing financial difficulties. However, I’ve learned that resilience is not about avoiding difficulties but about facing them head-on with a positive mindset. Being denied admission to nursing school on my first attempt was a significant setback, but instead of giving up, I used it as motivation to improve myself. I earned certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - Basic Life Support (CPR-BLS) and continued my doula training. These experiences taught me that resilience is the key to overcoming obstacles and achieving long-term success. My desire to pursue a career in nursing and midwifery is rooted in a deep commitment to serve others. During my third childbirth, I experienced firsthand the disparities that women of color often face, particularly when their voices are ignored. This experience fueled my passion to advocate for other women, ensuring they receive the care and respect they deserve. My unselfishness is reflected in my daily interactions, where I consistently prioritize the needs of others, whether it’s caring for my family or supporting the women I work with as a doula. Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) while raising three children requires a high level of focus and determination. I am deeply committed to my studies and my future career. Every day, I set aside dedicated time for my coursework, balancing my responsibilities as a mother and student with careful planning and unwavering determination. My focus is always on the end goal—becoming a nurse and midwife who can make a difference in the lives of others. My strong work ethic is evident in how I manage my time and responsibilities. Whether it’s studying late into the night, caring for my children, or continuing my professional development, I approach every task with dedication and perseverance. I believe that success is built on hard work, and I apply this belief to every aspect of my life. My ultimate goal is to become a labor and delivery nurse and a midwife. I am pursuing a degree in nursing because I want to be in a position where I can advocate for women’s health, particularly for women of color who often face systemic disparities in healthcare. This scholarship will help me achieve my academic and career goals, enabling me to focus entirely on my studies and professional growth. To me, leadership is about more than just guiding others—it’s about inspiring them to be their best selves and fostering a sense of community. As I continue my education and move forward in my career, I am committed to being a leader who listens, empowers, and advocates for those who need it most.

Every day, I strive to embody strong leadership and communication skills, resilience, unselfishness, focus, and a strong work ethic in all aspects of my life. As a mother of three, these traits are not just abstract concepts—they are the backbone of my daily routine and my journey toward achieving my goals. Whether it is studying late into the night, caring for my children, or continuing my professional development, I approach every task with dedication and perseverance. To me, leadership is about more than just guiding others—it is about inspiring them to be their best selves and fostering a sense of community. As I continue my education and move forward in my career, I am committed to being a leader who listens, empowers, and advocates for those who need it most.

My passion for helping others reach their best potential was ignited through a deeply transformative experience—my third childbirth. This experience opened my eyes to the significant disparities that women of color often face when seeking a natural birth process, particularly when they have a history of cesarean sections. During this time, my desires and preferences were disregarded by healthcare providers, leaving me feeling powerless and unheard. This was a turning point for me, as it fueled a deep-seated determination to advocate for women who find themselves in similar situations. I realized that to truly make a difference, I needed to pursue a career in nursing and midwifery, where I could empower and support women during one of the most pivotal moments of their lives. As a mother of three, balancing the demands of family life with my commitment to advancing my education has been both challenging and rewarding. Currently, I am not employed, which has made this journey even more difficult. However, these challenges have also taught me the importance of resilience, determination, and resourcefulness—qualities that I have honed and continue to develop as I work toward my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. One of the most significant challenges I faced was being denied admission to nursing school on my first attempt. At the time, this felt like a major setback, and I questioned whether my dream of becoming a nurse was attainable. However, after reflecting on this experience and seeking guidance from supportive mentors, I began to view this setback not as a rejection, but as a redirection—an opportunity to grow and strengthen my resolve. In response to this setback, I took proactive steps to enhance my qualifications and deepen my understanding of the healthcare field. I earned certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - Basic Life Support (CPR-BLS) and completed continuous doula training for all stages of pregnancy, wellness, and mental health. These experiences have been instrumental in developing my skills in empathy, compassion, and patient advocacy—core competencies that are essential for helping others achieve their best outcomes in healthcare. They have also deepened my commitment to the nursing profession and solidified my purpose in life: to serve as a compassionate and knowledgeable advocate for women’s health. Receiving this scholarship would alleviate a significant financial burden, allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and further develop my ability to support and uplift others. It will not only help me achieve my academic and career goals but will also empower me to continue advocating for women’s health and ensuring that every woman receives the care, respect, and support she deserves. I am committed to using the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to make a positive impact in the lives of others, particularly those whose voices are often unheard. This scholarship represents more than just financial support; it is a crucial step toward fulfilling my purpose and passion for helping others be their best, especially in moments where they need it most.

Throughout my transformative journey through motherhood, I faced the stark reality of childbirth's unpredictability, overcoming significant adversity. What began as a routine induction at forty weeks' gestation spiraled into a grueling forty-eight-hour labor, culminating in an emergency cesarean section. Amidst this taxing experience, only a small fraction of the nursing team displayed the compassion and information-sharing that eased my distress. The aftermath of this trauma lingered, yet my spirit remained resilient. Despite my OB-GYN discussing a repeat cesarean due to minimal cervical dilation, I found myself silenced and disregarded by the nursing staff during a pivotal moment. This ordeal reinforced my determination to pursue a path that ensures empathy and expertise during significant life events. The turning point towards a career in nursing emerged during my third childbirth. Supported by my midwife and doula, I achieved a triumphant homebirth after enduring two previous cesareans. My experience highlighted the gaps in medical training concerning childbirth, particularly the overreliance on inductions and cesarean sections. This realization propelled me towards a mission to elevate maternity care. Guided by this mission, I aspire to become a midwife, setting me on a trajectory that includes attaining Basic Life Support and Doula certifications, and pursuing a nursing degree at Georgia Gwinnett College. My goal is to offer comprehensive care to maternity patients and their families across diverse settings, whether at home, in a birth center, or a hospital. Georgia's alarmingly high maternity mortality rate demands an urgent shift in care, and I am determined to be an agent of change. In the future, I wish to help my community by addressing this pressing issue. My journey aligns seamlessly with Maya Angelou's insight – as a nurse, I am poised to mend not just the physical body, but also the heart, mind, and soul of those in my care. I am committed to infusing each act of care with compassion and expertise, focusing on genuine informed consent for medical interventions. I intend to bridge the gap between medical professionals and the families they serve, facilitating emotional, mental, and physical healing. This approach is not just a responsibility but a privilege I eagerly anticipate embracing. In a state where maternal mortality looms as a daunting challenge, I am steadfast in my commitment to make a difference. The experiences I have endured have equipped me with a unique perspective and a deep-seated empathy that I believe is crucial in the field of maternity care. I am passionate about creating a supportive environment for mothers, one where they feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout their childbirth journey. By becoming a midwife, I aim to transform the maternity care landscape in Georgia, ensuring that every mother receives the compassionate and comprehensive care she deserves.

My exploration of mental health has been a profound and transformative journey, shaping my beliefs, influencing the dynamics of my relationships, and guiding the trajectory of my career aspirations. The pivotal moment came when I realized my potential as an infinite energetic being, a revelation that brought much-needed balance into my life. Before this realization, I was entangled in the intricate web of societal expectations, inadvertently neglecting the profound truth that I am an energetic being undergoing a human experience. This newfound perspective not only altered my perception of failures but also reframed them as indispensable redirections, serving as stepping stones for both my current state of being and my future success. Embracing the concept of meditation and grounding became integral in this process, offering me essential tools to calm my restless mind, temper my ego, and soothe my nervous system. Through these practices, I discovered the power of allowing my body to relax and embrace the unknown, fostering a sense of tranquility amid life's uncertainties. Furthermore, my mental health journey led me to cultivate a deep sense of faith in the ultimate source, akin to what some might refer to as God. This newfound faith empowered me to relinquish control over an uncertain future and instead, be fully present in the current moment. It allowed me to break free from the monotonous routines of everyday tasks that failed to nourish my soul or bring genuine joy. This realization became a catalyst for a profound shift, urging me to embrace each moment and accept my past without the burden of regrets. This transformative journey facilitated my ultimate expansion, paving the way for a more fulfilling and meaningful existence. In the realm of relationships, my experience with mental health prompted a reevaluation of the dynamics that contribute to genuine connection and mutual growth. I discovered that the authenticity and depth of relationships are intrinsically linked to my own well-being. By prioritizing my mental health and fostering a sense of balance, I found that my connections with others became more profound, meaningful, and supportive. This shift in relational dynamics also involved a conscious effort to surround myself with individuals who shared similar values and understood the importance of mental and emotional well-being. In the realm of career aspirations, my mental health journey played a crucial role in reshaping my goals and ambitions. Understanding my true nature as an infinite energetic being guided me towards a career path that aligned with my core values and brought a sense of purpose. The resilience developed through navigating mental health challenges became a valuable asset in facing professional hurdles. Instead of pursuing a career solely for external validation or societal expectations, I now seek roles and projects that contribute to my personal fulfillment and well-being. In conclusion, my experience with mental health has been a transformative odyssey that has left an indelible mark on my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. The realization of my potential as an infinite energetic being served as the catalyst for a profound shift in perspective, allowing me to navigate life's challenges with resilience and grace. It has instilled in me a deep sense of faith, not only in the ultimate source but also in the power of authenticity, meaningful connections, and purpose-driven pursuits in both personal and professional realms.

In the midst of my transformative journey through motherhood, I confronted the raw reality of childbirth's unpredictability. What began as a routine induction at 40 weeks' gestation unfolded into a strenuous 48-hour labor, resulting in an emergency cesarean delivery. Amid the intensity of this experience, only two nurses among the team of ten demonstrated the compassion and willingness to share information with me to provide some solace in those intense moments. The aftermath of this birthing trauma lingered, yet my spirit remained resilient and hopeful for a different outcome in subsequent pregnancies. In my quest to explore the possibility of avoiding a repeat cesarean when not medically necessary and instead pursuing a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), my concerns were brushed aside by my doctor and the nursing staff. This experience ignited the flame for my unwavering commitment to carve a path for empathy and expertise, guiding individuals thought the miraculous journey of childbirth. My journey toward nursing was further amplified during my third childbirth, guided by my Midwife and Doula. Following two previous cesarean births, I wholeheartedly embraced a homebirth, and this experience illuminated the gaps in medical training surrounding vaginal childbirth after prior cesareans (VBAC/VBAMC). Throughout this final pregnancy, I gained invaluable insights that ignited my mission to enhance maternity care for all birthing individuals, encompassing nutrition, fitness, chiropractic care, and mental affirmations. Guided by this mission, my aspiration to become a midwife and establish a birthing and meditation center solidified. My trajectory encompassed attaining Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - Basic Life Support (CPR-BLS) and Doula certifications, earning a pre-nursing degree from Herzing University, and currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Georgia Gwinnett College. Moreover, my journey is accompanied by a passionate commitment towards self-improvement. I delved meticulously into medical literature and absorbed the stories of individuals who harnessed their skills to serve diverse patients. As a pre-natal and post-partum Doula, I have learned to empower birthing families through education while underscoring the significance of nutrition and mental preparation. This experience emphasized the pivotal role empathy and effective communication play in cultivating trust. Similarly, my engagement within the community, from volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to assisting families through Volunteer Gwinnett, underscored the importance of acceptance, selflessness, and building bridges within the community. With each interaction, I acknowledged the potential for emotional, mental, and physical healing. The prospect of seamless collaboration with healthcare professionals in pursuit of shared goals invigorates me. The unity among like-minded peers in nursing school promises to amplify this vision. My journey, interwoven with personal and professional growth, harmonizes seamlessly with Georgia Gwinnett College's Nursing Program principles. As I strive to mend hearts, minds, bodies, and souls, I wholeheartedly embrace the path that lies ahead, eagerly anticipating my forthcoming acceptance into nursing school.
