In December of 2022, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This has changed many parts of my life, but I have been able to grow and continue living life. Having diabetes has given me opportunities to teach others to be compassionate towards people who have health challenges. Many times while working with children I have been asked, “What is that thing on your arm?”. That thing is a continuous glucose monitor or a CGM. Its basic purpose is to monitor my blood sugar/glucose levels. This device has a cannula that goes into my arm to measure how much glucose is in my blood. The cannula is connected to a transmitter which sticks to my arm. The glucose level information is then sent to my phone. I get an alert when the sugar content in my blood is too low or too high. Each time someone asks this question, a teaching opportunity is given to me. I try to explain that the CGM makes sure that I have enough sugar in my blood. If the alarm goes off, children sometimes wonder what it means, so I explain that if my blood sugar is low I have to eat a snack to make sure that it goes up to a normal level. This helps keep me safe. When it alerts me of high blood sugar, sometimes I have to take a medicine called insulin. Each time I eat a meal I have to check my blood sugar to know how much insulin to give to counteract the carbohydrates I eat. There have been times when I have explained this, where kids become curious, grossed out or confused. Trying to explain a health condition in understandable terms for children can be difficult, but they need to learn about the world and the people around them. When individuals do not understand someone’s health concern it can be difficult to accept them or just easier to not include them. Teaching children about health conditions and how to get along with others who have health challenges is important. The questions about my CGM from children do not bother me. It helps me to teach about health concerns and the importance of accepting everyone. Helping children be aware of health conditions improves their understanding of more people. When children understand someone’s health concerns, many times they are more willing to accept others and get along. As an intern in a kindergarten class, I was asked questions about my CGM and have explained it to a few of the kids. Although they might not fully understand Type 1 Diabetes, they still interact with and accept me. Young children are great examples of accepting others. As people grow older they develop more opinions and preferences. If children can be informed about the health conditions of those around them, they might continue to include these individuals as they grow and develop their opinions. I love the opportunity I have to teach children about Type 1 Diabetes and other health conditions. I have personally chosen to be loving and considerate of everyone, those with and without health concerns. A more inclusive society can start with educators and children being more accepting of everyone. My diagnosis has helped me see more of the challenges that people face with health concerns. As a result, I have chosen to be kinder and more accepting of all people. As an educator, I can teach children to choose to show compassion to those with health concerns and everyone they meet.

As I work with children, I am impressed by their joy in life and their desire to do so many things. I want to be able to give children opportunities to experience a variety of activities and learn all that they can so that they may feel the fulfillment that comes from having a purpose and passion in life. I hope that by sharing some of the interests and opportunities that I have had, children might recognize something they are interested in as well. I have been able to share my love of Irish dance and explain that it helps me take care of my body, accomplish goals, and feel joy. I have also shared music with children by playing the piano and cello. Music is motivating, and enthusiastic and requires practice and dedication. I love reading books because it helps me increase my imagination and learn about the world around me. In preschool lessons, I create activities for children to be creative, learn, and find things they are inspired by. As I am with children, I have seen that when I am enthusiastic about an activity, they become more interested in it as well. Letting kids be creative and allowing them to experience the world, encourages them to find something that they love to do. If children are given a variety of opportunities, they have a greater chance to find what they are passionate about. My hope as a childhood educator is to help children find their passion in life.

Children are the future of the world. Giving kids as many opportunities to learn as possible provides the world with increased hope and a chance at reaching greater heights. Education is important in giving children these opportunities. Learning life skills enables individuals to persevere through challenges and influence their community for the better. Education opens new possibilities and increases the chances of success in life. When people support children’s learning, they are securing the future of the world. The world community is benefited through the education of all people. Education is essential for growth, creates resilience through challenges, and impacts communities for the better. Education enhances growth. Throughout my education, I have grown as I have learned and applied information to my life. Reading is a life skill that has improved my opportunities. In elementary school, I worked on developing my reading skills. Throughout my education, reading has enabled me to help others to also develop their reading skills. I recently had the opportunity to intern in a kindergarten class. It was a great experience as I learned how to teach students math and reading skills. At the beginning of the school year, the students started to learn the alphabet; by the end of the semester, they were reading books and writing sentences. These students inspire me. Their progress allowed me to see the importance of education in children’s lives. Education gives individuals the chance to learn and grow. Expanding the capacity of our minds gives us the gift of knowledge. Using the information that we gain helps us accomplish great tasks, continue to grow, and strengthen others around us. I loved helping the kindergarteners. My goal as a teacher is to help students receive an education, enable them to pursue their life goals, and find joy in learning. As a teacher, I can create a positive impact on children’s lives and give them opportunities through education to make a difference in the future. Education is essential to growth. Challenges affect each person’s life. Conquering these hardships builds resilience. Resilience is an important life skill. When individuals show resilience, they can adapt to or recover from difficulties. Many times, in math classes, I have struggled to understand concepts, but when I persevere, I develop resilience. Every day, resilience allows people to get up and accomplish difficult jobs. In school and daily learning, regular challenges build resilience. When teaching preschool lessons, there are times when the children get discouraged that they cannot accomplish a task. I have helped them realize that they have the capabilities to complete the task as they show resilience. Practicing skills consistently strengthens resilience as we work to grow and thrive through challenges. Challenges are necessary for building resilience and helping all people become stronger. Strengthening communities increases the chances of success that people have. Education is a building block of thriving communities. In areas of the world where education is limited, many communities struggle to survive each day. I have heard and seen many stories where education has changed people’s lives and their communities. Strengthening communities enables individuals to reach their full potential. Learning fundamental skills in reading, writing, and math allows individuals to accomplish more in life. As communities are given these learning opportunities, entire communities can grow and thrive. Positively impacting communities with educational opportunities allows people to succeed. Throughout life, I have seen the importance of education. Education gives individuals the chance to flourish in all aspects of life. Giving opportunities to children increases the strength of the future in education, resilience, and communities.

My education and career plan is to ultimately become an elementary educator and help children learn, grow, and progress through a variety of opportunities and experiences. These experiences give children many chances to develop a love for learning and gain skills to achieve success. Beginning in the fall of 2025, I plan on attending Brigham Young University. This college had a good Early Childhood and Elementary Education program. Throughout high school, Early Childhood Education classes, and my internship, I have determined that I want to focus on elementary education. I am interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a minor in Biology. In 2029 or 2030, I hope to graduate and begin teaching. I hope to teach children in grades K-3. As I attend college, I plan to continue working with children as I babysit, nanny, work in childcare centers, intern, and complete student teaching. Attending college will prepare me to teach in an elementary school after I graduate. During student teaching, I will teach in a classroom and use the skills I develop to help students grow. Receiving a college education will help me teach students and help them progress in life. Pursuing a degree in Elementary Education at Brigham Young University will enable me to help children love learning and reach great accomplishments. Children are the future of the world. On December 23, 2022 I was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. As I have learned about diabetes and how it affects my body, often I am asked questions about diabetes from my friends and neighbors. Many of the kids I babysit have asked about the sensor that I wear on my arm which tests my blood sugar. This has been a great teaching opportunity for me. When people learn more about Type 1 Diabetes they are able to accept and include others better because they understand diabetes more. Children are excellent examples of showing love and compassion towards others. I have learned from kids how to lovingly accept others to a fuller extent. Showing kindness, compassion, and acceptance strengthens relationships and unity. Working with children has opened my mind to see ways that I can help others in their challenges as I work to make education available to them. Challenges affect each person’s life. Conquering these hardships builds resilience. Resilience is an important life skill. When individuals show resilience, they can adapt to or recover from difficulties. Living with diabetes is a challenge. Focusing on my blood sugar takes up a lot of time, but it is necessary for me to live. I have to be aware of what I eat and how I exercise. As an Irish dancer, sometimes I have to step out of practice to eat or give insulin. Diabetes management is a challenge because it disrupts normal activities. Even through these disruptions and constant worries, I have been able to gain valuable experiences and participate in important opportunities. I have developed resilience as I continue to live life while managing diabetes. In math classes, I have struggled to understand concepts many times, but when I persevere, I develop resilience. Every day, resilience allows people to get up and accomplish difficult jobs. In school and daily learning, regular challenges build resilience. When teaching preschool lessons, there are times when the children get discouraged that they cannot accomplish a task. Learning about children and diabetes has helped me learn about myself and the world around me. Giving opportunities to children benefits the future of the world as people receive education, build resilience, and unite their communities.

Throughout my life, I have been busy with piano, cello, Irish dance, National Honors Society, Young Women's, service, babysitting, and many other activities. I love being able to spend time with my family and others. In all of these activities, and through a variety of experiences, I have been able to learn and grow. Music and Irish dance are things I love to do. I have been able to participate in Solo/Ensemble for cello, up to the state level. Playing new songs has improved my technique, introduced me to various music styles, and allowed me to play in church. As a cello section leader, I help the cellists learn their parts and create beautiful music. Working with an orchestra in school helps me listen to the other instruments. I have competed in Irish dance in the preliminary competitions and have achieved the level of open champion. Becoming an open champion was my goal for a long time. Each March, my studio puts on a recital to showcase what each dancer has done that year. This is always a fun opportunity to share my talents and learn different choreography. There are also ceili (team) dances that I have learned and competed in. Working as a team can be difficult sometimes, but when each team member gives their full effort, the results are amazing. For the past two years, in the American Fork High School Christmas Around the World assembly, I organized an Irish dance routine and performed it with my friend and sister. Irish dance and music have been great ways for me to learn about myself, accomplish goals, and share what I learn with others. Service is an important and joyful part of my life. Being in a Young Women's group and serving as secretary and president over the years, has taught me many leadership, organization, service, and planning skills. It has also helped me develop greater patience and love. For many of our activities, we participate in service projects. These activities have included humanitarian aid projects, food drives, sewing and tying blankets, doing yard work, helping special needs youth at their mutual activity, and providing meals and entertainment for seniors in our community. Regular service with my family makes me happy. Giving service is fun and helps so many people find more joy in life. I love working with and caring for children. The responsibility to care for children is great, but it is so much fun. Children can be very enthusiastic about learning and including others. My skills and knowledge increase each time I work with children and help them learn about themselves and the world around them. As an intern in a kindergarten classroom, I have the chance to support the students individually. Teaching them math and reading concepts is a chance to help the future succeed in life. These students look up to me as a leader inside and outside of the school setting. Learning through service and a variety of experiences in life, strengthens me and helps me benefit my family, ward, community, and the world.

Having a passion in life and helping others discover what they are interested in makes life fulfilling. When I was in third grade my mom put me and my sisters in an Irish dance class. It was really fun to learn such a cool and unique type of dance. We learned new steps, moves, and tricks and made new friends. I learned so much from having fun and working hard in dance. As I continued to dance, Irish dance became my passion. I have been doing Irish dance for over eight years now and I love it! My enthusiasm and love for Irish dance have helped me push through intense classes, blisters, and sore muscles. As a result, I have grown stronger and have accomplished some of my biggest goals. I started competing when I was ten or eleven and have worked since then to progress through the levels of competitive Irish dance. Many times I did not place, but I continued with determination to win. Eventually, I was able to advance to the Preliminary Championships. This competition presented a new struggle because the length of the dances increased. I had to work extra hard and I spent more time practicing. I worked on improving by focusing on technique, stamina, drilling, choreography, competing, and performing so that I could do my best at the US Western Regional Competition, called Oireachtas. With the work that I had put in, I competed in the solo and team competitions at Oireachtas. This experience of working hard to improve, helped me become a better dancer. Although Irish dance was difficult sometimes, I persisted and my love for Irish Dance grew. When I was young it was just a dance class, but I am grateful that I have the opportunity to try Irish dance because it has become one of the greatest things I love to do. Many children do not have the chance to experience a variety of things because of their life and family circumstances. Especially for these children, finding things they enjoy can be difficult. With limited opportunities, children are not able to experience as many things in the world that could potentially spark their interest. If something did catch a child’s attention though, through hard work, this attention could be developed and turn into something they love and are passionate about. Music, reading, and participating in other creative activities are also experiences I have had that make me feel happy. When I am with children, I have seen that when I am enthusiastic about an activity, they become more interested in it as well. Letting kids be creative and allowing them to experience the world, encourages them to find something that they love to do. If children are given a variety of opportunities, they have a greater chance to find what they are passionate about. My hope as a childhood educator is to help children find their passion in life.

At my Kindergarten internship, I have been asked questions about my CGM and have explained it to a few of the kids.

For the past two years, in the High School Christmas Around the World assembly, I organized an Irish dance routine and performed it with my friend and sister. Irish dance and music have been great ways for me to learn about myself, accomplish goals, and share what I learn with others. Listening to music in dance and playing music on the cello and piano has greatly benefited me. The piano is an important part of my life. Learning to play the piano was a requirement when I was little, but as I have improved my skills over the past twelve years, I have seen the benefits of playing the piano in my life. My mom required me and my siblings to play the piano because she knew it would be a beneficial life skill. When I was beginning to take lessons, my teacher taught me new skills and to enjoy playing the piano. When I was skilled enough to sight read songs and play hard pieces, my love for playing the piano grew. Now, I love learning and being able to play difficult songs. Although some songs I have played were challenging to learn, being able to play them now is amazing. My love for piano has grown as I have been challenged and seen the benefits that piano brings to my life. My love for piano has motivated me to improve my skills enough to share music with others. I have been able to work on sight reading to play hymns in seminary. I have also learned how to accompany other instrumentalists in church. Playing the piano has also helped me teach younger kids how to play the piano and other instruments. In orchestra, I have used the knowledge that I have of the piano to help me complete music theory worksheets, know notes, time and key signatures, rhythms, and much more. With this knowledge I have been able to help others and figure out difficult sections and note patterns. As I have played the piano I have learned and grown so much. The piano has taught me skills that I will use for the rest of my life.

Taking the ACT test seven times is a lot. Before some of these tests, I studied and prepared, but my score remained the same, or dropped, instead of increasing to reach my score goal of 30. This was challenging because I felt like studying helped prepare me for the test, but then I got a worse score. Although I did not reach my goal for the ACT, I learned valuable test taking skills. After taking my first ACT I knew the structure of the test and was able to practice each section. As I prepared multiple times for the ACT, I would study several times each week in the summer to increase my speed and accuracy on each test. Math was my hardest section, but I spent time consistently studying and practicing different types of problems. As I practiced and studied I became faster and better at answering the questions. Reviewing grammar and punctuation rules for the English portion helped me as well. Completing questions became easier because I became faster at recognizing what the question was asking. Throughout this process of preparing for upcoming tests, I studied with my friend and my sister who both did well on the ACT. I also checked out an ACT prep book from the library to practice and learn more strategies. In school I asked my teachers for help and used many other resources. Each individual and resource helped me learn and become more confident in my abilities. Preparing for tests increased my resilience and study skills, and I eventually received a higher score. The ACT also prepared me for taking AP tests. Completing all of the questions on a timed test is difficult, but because I had taken so many ACTs, I was able to pass all of my AP tests. Although I did not reach my desired score on the ACT, with persistence, I have improved and become better at taking tests and studying. Seven ACT tests is a lot, but each test helped develop skills for the future. Challenges affect each person’s life. Conquering these hardships builds resilience.
