Moving from Las Vegas to Central State University, an HBCU, was transformative. In Las Vegas, I struggled with self-worth, feeling isolated as I rarely saw black girls who looked like me. I faced microaggressions from white teachers and endured mockery for being black. However, at Central State, I found a community that celebrated black excellence, where I discovered confidence and saw a bright future. Being black to me means embracing excellence, resilience, and strength, qualities nurtured at Central State. As a Yard Ambassador and Influencer for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, I've promoted educational opportunities, inspiring fellow students. If I could have everyone in the world read just one book, it would be "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. This novel holds a special place in my heart, as it not only captivated my imagination but also transformed my perspective on empathy, justice, and the power of compassion. I was sheltered from the harsh realities of prejudice and discrimination. It wasn't until I encountered "To Kill a Mockingbird" in 11th grade that my eyes were opened to the profound impact of social inequality. The book's vivid storytelling and relatable characters drew me into a world where injustice was palpable, making me question the prejudices that exist within society and myself. One of the most poignant moments in the book was when Scout, the young protagonist, witnessed her father, Atticus Finch, defending Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of a crime. As Atticus fought for justice in the face of overwhelming prejudice, I felt a surge of admiration and a deep yearning for a more just and equitable world. The beauty of "To Kill a Mockingbird" lies in its ability to bridge the gap between fiction and reality, prompting readers to reflect on their own actions and beliefs. It challenges us to confront our biases and preconceived notions, urging us to see the inherent worth and dignity in every individual, regardless of their race, social standing, or background. By reading "To Kill a Mockingbird," individuals are not only exposed to the harsh realities of injustice but also presented with a call to action. It catalyzes important conversations about social inequality, racism, and the need for empathy. Through Scout's eyes, we witness the power of compassion and understanding in the face of adversity, inspiring us to become agents of change in our own communities. In today's interconnected world, where divisions and misunderstandings abound, "To Kill a Mockingbird" offers a pathway to empathy and unity. It provides a lens through which we can examine our own biases and work towards building a more inclusive society. By understanding the experiences of others, we can foster greater compassion and work towards dismantling the barriers that perpetuate inequality. By encouraging global readership of "To Kill a Mockingbird," we can collectively embark on a journey towards greater understanding, empathy, and social change. Let us embrace the transformative power of literature and strive toward a future where justice and compassion prevail.

    Normandie’s HBCU Empower Scholar Grant
I spent the majority of my youth attending schools in suburban locations. If nothing else, my mother wanted me to acquire a good education. She made many sacrifices for me to attend these schools, including transferring us 1,000 miles from home, but I was always preoccupied in class. The students were usually rough on me. Because there were so few black kids in Nevada's best schools, both students and faculty frequently made an effort to make fun of me. I used to get teased in class for having curly hair. Teachers deliberately mispronounce my name daily to make other students laugh. Things that white students would do in class appeared normal to staff, but I would be suspended if I did them. In Nevada, the educational system did not work in the favor of colored kids, which made me feel troubled and continually victimized. After having had enough of this treatment, I returned to Michigan, where I attended school in downtown Detroit. Never before have I achieved such high grades, been so focused, or had staff members care about me and watch out for me. I still keep in touch with the staff members who introduced me to the importance of being a black woman and the difficulties it can provide while giving us an advantage over others. When picking a university to attend, each staff member made me feel at home and welcome, so I decided to attend Central State University. The campus is also welcoming, and I appreciate the sense of community that HBCU students have. Nothing is more reassuring than realizing that we all share the same experiences and backgrounds. As a young black woman living in America, an HBCU is an ideal location for me to develop without fear of discrimination or bias.

Jhene Aiko's song "W.A.Y.S." has a meaningful message for me. Since I first heard this song in 2016, despite my struggles with mental health, it has kept me optimistic. The song W.A.Y.S, which stands for Why Aren't You Smiling, is a constant reminder to never give up and to smile even on the most trying days. This message is so strong to me. My closest friend Kweli and my grandmother both passed away within two days of each other, and that is when I began to understand the significance of this song. The first line of this song starts with, "At 44 minutes to four, An angel walked up to my door. Opened the windows to my soul, Told me he thinks that I should know; there's no slowing down." It constantly brings to mind my good friend Kweli; he significantly improved my outlook on life. I often think of Kweli and how he would want me to continue being God's strongest child whenever I hear this song. The world doesn't wait for anyone; therefore, why dwell? This song reminds me why I need to be courageous and overcome my stress and anxiety.

I have been fascinated with marketing since I was a small child, yet I never understood it. Since learning what marketing's goal is, I've been coming up with many inventive ways to sell to my age group. Barbie and toy advertisements used to be my favorite things to watch. As I grew older, I realized that the toys weren't really what I was interested in; instead, it was the bold colors, the fonts, and the voices which would play at high pitches. It has become effortless for me to convince clients to purchase products, so I have decided to pursue a career in this area. I've held a number of retail jobs and always maintained the highest sales. I'm naturally good at persuasion. In case I come up with a fresh concept to pitch to others, I usually have a notebook beside my bed with sticky notes nearby. My name is Asia Kimpson, and I'm going to be a marketing strategist in the future. I aim to support businesses in finding innovative approaches to engage their audience. My preferred industry is the beauty sector. Seeing advertisements for Loreal, Revlon, and Maybelline now that I am older makes my eyes sparkle. I adore how these strategists can work with a brand to increase sales and brand awareness. Women love to keep themselves put together. Our hair, nails, and makeup come before many obligations. Raising brand awareness is the sole purpose of marketing. These beauty companies' well-known brands result from their excellent marketing teams. Black women and women of color particularly are not the first people that come to mind when being marketed. I hardly ever saw advertisements involving us when I was growing up. The beauty business has recently experienced greater diversity. It is challenging to grow up believing that you are different because of your skin color or hair when a business does not understand how to sell to its consumers. I want to contribute to the awareness-raising and changes we want to bring about for younger girls of color. I still need to take a course solely on marketing exclusively. I don't know which company I would join. However, I have a thing for fashion and beauty. I'm eager to discover new strategies for approaching customers like myself. The prospect of learning about the many kinds of target audiences also excites me, and I am eager to see how various brand strategies influence customers. Thank you, Asia Kimpson
