Growing up in an underserved Caribbean American household, I learned early how to survive with limited resources, adapt quickly, and carry responsibilities far larger than my age. Nothing tested my strength more than becoming a single mother while beginning my journey at FVI to pursue nursing. When my son, Elijah, was born in 2023, my entire world shifted. I found myself raising him mostly on my own while trying to rebuild my life after leaving a relationship marked by inconsistency and emotional strain. Starting nursing school with no financial safety net began a chapter filled with purpose and major challenges. Balancing motherhood and nursing school has required incredible fortitude. Each day starts before sunrise as I wake at 5:30 AM, prepare Elijah for daycare, and commute nearly an hour to FVI’s Miami campus. I attend lectures, labs, and clinicals while carrying the responsibility of providing for him and making sure his needs are met. After school, I return home around 6:40 PM, spend time with him, complete our bedtime routine, and then study late into the night. All of this happens while managing bills, tuition, transportation, and childcare without a backup plan or financial support. Students from underserved communities face hurdles that reach far beyond academics. Financial strain, lack of guidance, and pressure to succeed can make higher education feel out of reach. These challenges are part of my daily reality. I am the first in my family to pursue a healthcare career, doing it without the advantage of someone showing me the way. I navigate motherhood, personal healing, and the demands of school at the same time. Despite everything, I continue showing up, studying hard, and pushing forward because my son depends on me and I refuse to give up on the future I am building for us. This scholarship would greatly impact my journey. It would help cover tuition so I can stay committed to my studies, clinicals, and NCLEX preparation without constant financial worry. For me, this award is more than financial help. It is an investment into a future nurse who is driven to serve her community. I believe I am a strong candidate because I embody discipline, determination, faith, and a genuine desire to create a better life for my family. When I imagine the future, I picture the moment I walk across the graduation stage in August 2026. I see myself with my head held high, tears in my eyes, knowing every early morning, long commute, sacrifice, and prayer brought me there. My name is Asia Miller. I'm 21 years old and currently a full-time nursing student at Florida Vocational Institute School of Nursing & Technology, where I’m pursuing my Associate of Science in Nursing. I am also a single mother to my smart and handsome, one-year-old son, Elijah. I balanced motherhood, school, and work, doing hair as a licensed cosmetologist from home, delivering with Instacart and DoorDash, doing anything I can to survive, all while staying focused on my goals. Every decision I make is with Elijah’s future in mind. Every problem I overcome brings us closer to the life I’ve always dreamed of. I refuse to let my struggles stop me from building the future we deserve. My journey to nursing wasn’t a straight path. After giving birth, I struggled with severe postpartum depression and PTSD from an emotionally abusive relationship. I often felt lost, unsure if I could be the mother I wanted to be for Elijah. When he’s sick, the world stops. It’s hard not being able to focus on things that made me feel like me. Through therapy and leaning into God, I found the strength to keep going. I knew I had to break generational cycles and become a strong example for my son. My heavenly grandmother, who passed in 2021, always encouraged me to be a nurse or “be something.” It was always “books before boy,” though my path didn’t start that way. On September 7, 2023, the day after I gave birth, I met a nurse who was so gentle and patient with me. She asked if I was a nurse. I replied, “No.” She said, “Your demeanor screams nurse!” That moment stayed with me. In high school, I didn’t want to be a nurse because I thought it was all blood, trauma, and needles. I chose Visual Arts, where I poured myself into painting, drawing, and turning thoughts into real images. Sometimes I wish I could paint my own illustrations in my book, but it would be painted as a fairytale, not a biography. But I’ve learned my real story has power. I want to use it to help others. That is one reason why I chose nursing. It’s how I turn pain into purpose. I plan to specialize in maternal or aesthetic care. I also dream of starting a nonprofit for single mothers or a business that blends cosmetology and nursing for survivors of abuse. My experiences as a mother, survivor, and caregiver have prepared me to serve others with compassion, respect for diverse backgrounds, and inner strength. Education is my way forward. It’s how I’ll create stable future for me and my son. Winning the Kelly O. Memorial Nursing Scholarship would lift a huge weight off my shoulders and allow me to focus more on my studies. This scholarship would mean more than financial help. It would be a reminder that my story matters, and that hard work, strength, and God can lead to something beautiful. Rising Above Being Just a Mommy "Mommy...Mommy..." My son's soft voice in the middle of the night. His small body was hot with fever of 102°F, and he reached for me. I held on to him, saying a prayer. I was exhausted, financially struggling, and emotionally drained, but I knew I had to keep going for him, for me, and for the future I was determined to build. Becoming a nurse isn’t just a career for me; it’s my purpose, my way of proving that these challenges go through won’t define who I am. As a single mother, my path to higher education hasn’t been essay. I worry about more than exams and assignments. I also worry about diapers, doctor visits, and making sure there’s food on the table. While others focus just on school, I have to balance my education with the daily responsibilities of being a mother. Even though my family offers help, I rarely ask for it because I see my son as my responsibility. I want him to grow up seeing his mom as someone who never gave up, no matter how hard life got. My passion for nursing comes from a deep want to help others, as I wish someone had helped me when I was crying out for help. Nursing is personal for me because it’s also about honoring my grandmother’s memory. She was always there to remind me to be a different seed from the bunch. Her words kept me going and she believed I was meant for something great. But my journey hasn’t just been about chasing a dream. It’s also been about survival. I’ve had to heal from the emotional scars of an abusive ex whose behavior still affects me today. There were times when I felt depressed, I questioned my worth, and I could not physically and emotionally take care of my son. Therapy has helped me heal and take control of my future. Despite the mental and emotional weight, I remind myself that I am not a victim, I am a survivor. To make ends meet, I hustle by doing hair a licensed home-based hairstylist, DoorDash, and Instacart. I’m doing everything I can to provide for my son while working toward my nursing degree. I plan to keep pushing forward until I reach my goal of earning my Master's degree in nursing. It’s a long road, but I am determined. Each job I take, no matter how small or exhausting, is one step closer to building the future I want for my son and myself. Pursuing a nursing career is more than just a job for me; it’s about creating a better life for my son, Elijah. I want him to see that no matter how hard life gets, he can always keep going. I want him to understand that his mother fought for a better future for both of us and that nothing was too difficult to overcome. This scholarship would do more than help pay for school, it would show that my hard work, sacrifices, and dedication are shown. With this support, I can focus more on my goal of becoming a nurse. Coping with postpartum depression and PTSD took a toll on my physical, emotional, and mental health. The depression drained me, making even simple tasks like cooking feel overwhelming. PTSD increased the situation since traumatic memories from my previous relationship were constantly brought to mind. I felt alone as I tried to balance motherhood with my own healing. During this minor setback, I realized I needed help, not just for me, but for Elijah too. Thanks to my past therapist and my current one, therapy became a lifeline, helping me work through years of pain and teaching me better ways to cope. I also found strength in my faith in God and in the support of family, who motivated me to take life one day at a time. This scholarship would help me financially, but it would also be an important step toward achieving my goals. As a nursing student, I have a drive to do well academically while maintaining my role of being a single mother. Nursing is my calling because it allows me to use my compassion, life experiences, and passion to help others. I understand what it is like to be vulnerable and in need of care, and I hope to use my experiences to provide the same compassion for my patients. This scholarship would help relieve some of the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus on my studies and aim to become a skilled and compassionate registered nurse.
