I'm hoping to become a software developer or programmer while pursuing my hobbies. To get there, I plan on getting a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. Outside of academics, I am involved in many extracurricular activities. I play tennis in the fall and spring, track and field in the winter and spring, and cross country in the fall. In addition, I'm my team's distance captain for my senior year in track and field, have earned my school's Athlete of the Week award for cross country, and have received ACE awards for both tennis and track and field.
As for clubs, I'm president of my school's National Honor Society chapter and treasurer for both my class and the Varsity Club. Furthermore, I participate in the yearbook club, Future Helpers of America, and Gay Straight Alliance. Outside of school as a whole, I'm a rhythm guitarist in a band called Third Story. We are most active during the summer and have even been awarded a certificate of recognition from the City of Buffalo Common Council.
Of all these, my favorite is the band. There, I have an excuse to participate in my favorite hobby, hang out with my friends, and brighten people’s days with music. We’ve played for bar crawls, graduation parties, city events, private gatherings, campsites, and more, but each experience is memorable because of the unique people we perform for and interact with.

Choosing to play a sport for the first time in junior year isn’t very conventional. Having never played tennis, let alone any sport, I needed to adapt quickly to match the skill of my experienced peers. I felt compelled to climb the team’s ranks. For that, I spent any spare time I had practicing on my own and studying professional games. I would go out to hit for hours by myself at a local elementary school with one tennis court, just to improve on the fundamentals. Being alone, it was hard to challenge myself or measure any tangible progress. I didn’t give up, though. Day by day, I was improving, though it wasn’t quite visible yet. Slowly but surely, there were fewer unforced errors and higher-quality shots creeping into my games during practices. Through this era of my tennis career, I was learning how to stay persistent, even if my efforts didn’t seem to pay off immediately. As my first season carried on, I actually started climbing the roster. I escaped exhibition, won a third doubles match, won a second doubles match, and even landed in first doubles for a match, although I didn’t win that one. I was finally reaping the fruits of my labor, and I was truly proud of myself. The payoff cemented the lesson that persistence is key when trying to improve, and that applies to anything, not just tennis.
This lesson is shaping my future in very positive ways. For starters, in my last tennis season, I have been made captain of the team; clearly, my effort has been recognized, and I can use this position to encourage other players to go down the same route I did. Outside of the sport, I’ve surged in other hobbies and even in my classes. My absolute favorite hobby, guitar playing, has seen the most improvement ever since my initial tennis season. This is because I now follow a similar practice structure to the one I used from tennis when I was initially working on my skill. I went from never having played in front of people before my first tennis season, to now being booked for plenty of shows next summer, and I owe it to my experience with persistence. When learning difficult songs, I no longer stop out of frustration; instead I keep pushing until I nail it. I hope to carry this momentum into becoming a true expert at the instrument and music as a whole, and tennis has shaped that path in my future.
This sport has also shaped my future academically. Over my sophomore year, before I started playing tennis, my grades were still rather good, but there was decent room for improvement. I had neither the discipline nor the persistence to chase high 90s throughout my harder classes, but that changed after my first season of tennis. My junior year was naturally harder than the previous year, but I actually received much higher grades, highlighting persistence as the significant difference I learned through tennis is what got me that far. I stopped waiting passively until something clicked in my harder classes; On the contrary, I went out of my way to study and research outside of school until I understood the concepts at hand, even if that took a long time. I wish to continue that growth throughout my last year of high school, college, a job, and whatever else may come, but I wish even more to leave a lasting impact on my younger teammates to learn these same lessons.
