Around 54 Percent of Children grow up in a 2-parent household. I unfortunately was not so lucky. In 2020, my mom received a devastating phone call: my father had passed away. This brought constant strain and hardship to my family amidst a global pandemic. We were forced to adapt emotionally and financially. I not only lost a father, but a role model and a mentor. I was the only man in my home, and now I was forced to meet the standards my father had created. We moved neighborhoods, and my immediate family was forced to adapt to our new reality of a single-parent household.
I watched my mother sacrifice small luxuries like recreational activities and eating out to ensure financial stability. We began to find joy in cost-effective experiences and activities. I look back and applaud not only my mother, but also my siblings for displaying maturity and understanding of our situation. I was motivated by the hardships we experienced during this period. I committed to attending college and pursuing a stable career so we would no longer struggle. Throughout my academic journey, that promise has fueled my determination as I move closer to my goal.
From a young age, I showed a strong interest in math and science. I often asked my mother and teachers to introduce concepts ahead of schedule, attended after-school programs, and even enjoyed testing days. In sixth grade, I joined a program that allowed me to take pre-algebra two years early. I welcomed the challenge and thrived at an accelerated pace.
As I entered high school, I was frequently asked what I wanted to major in. I knew I wanted to pursue a STEM field, but with few family members having attended college, I had limited exposure to the variety of careers available. During my junior year, I attended a career expo at a local university, where I discovered Industrial Engineering. It was the perfect combination of mathematics, logic, and problem-solving. I was immediately fascinated and began researching universities that offered the program, as well as the career opportunities it could provide.
Now, as a senior, I am applying to institutions that support my goal of earning a degree in Industrial Engineering. This career path aligns with my passion for analytical thinking and complex problem-solving. By pursuing Industrial Engineering, I will not only fulfill my academic interests but also create opportunities to support my family and make a lasting impact.
